Adobe InDesign / Re: PDF to Indesign Software
November 21, 2017, 12:56:53 PM
I had it back when it first came out for CS2. It did an OK job but text reflowed most times and item positions were sometimes wrong. It only did one page of a PDF at a time to as I recall. I put my money into Pit Stop as it was easier to just fix the PDF in Acrobat then converting to InDesign. This may have all changed since it's been out for many years now. Try the demo and see how you like it.

I had no idea other counties used a different size for business cards. I thought 3.5 x 2 was a worldwide standard. Are their wallets different sizes too?

Quote from: Designia(o_O) on March 28, 2017, 11:47:14 AMOrdered it last night! Yup, I have an article bookmarked with Java installs I'll need.
Thanks!

Hey Alma, still got your guns??? Thought so.
One gun. A shotgun. The State of New Jersey makes you get a purchase permit for everything, including BB guns. BB guns are not even firearms, they function with spring or air power, but because they look like real guns, they are classified as firearms. BTW slingshots are also outlawed in NJ.

You will need to install an old version of Java to get Illustrator to run. Google it to find the right version.

I wouldn't waste my time on it. I had the same machine and I tried the windex thing for a week with no better results. What did work for me was to print at the highest DPI it will print at. Mine had a clogged cyan head so printing at highest DPI I would get a little banding sometimes but for most jobs it was fine just took a whole lot longer to print and used more ink.

Not a wiz with actions and the like but this might be an easy fix.

I've been using this script in Illy to find Pantone equivalents for years now.  It says CS1 and CS2 but it runs fine in CS6.

Bindery / Re: Double Gate Fold
October 11, 2016, 03:25:40 PM
I used to ask the bindery what they wanted. Most times it was a 1/16 unless the stock was real thick then it was 3/32's on each panel, but they could always adjust it before they cut the full stack and folded it.

Some people are posting issues with CS6 and Sierra, anyone here using CS6 with Sierra? I have a side job coming in this month and I don't want to update if there is going to be issues.

General Prepress / Re: New Gig

Quote from: DigitalCrapShoveler on July 26, 2016, 01:18:58 PMGlad it worked out, Alma. I've been out on the skids for a bit now myself. I've never NOT had a job and it's kind of scary and surreal. On the upside, it gives me some time to figure out what I want to do, regardless of the lack of work out there.

Good luck to you, sir.
I got a lot done while I was unemployed around the house and I did a lot of fishing too.  But it's always in the back of your head will I ever find another job, and that part sucks. Good luck to you too.

General Prepress / New Gig
July 26, 2016, 10:20:36 AM
So After Alma Offset closed I was on unemployment for 4 months. It was a nice vacation but was looking like I would never find another job. By chance I saw a job listed on craigslist for a Production Assistant and figured I give it a shot. They sent me an email asking me to call the manager of the shop to set up an interview so I did. I've ben here 5 weeks now and it's nothing like prepress that's for sure. It's a repro shop that does digital B&W large and small format, color digital also large and small and online file storage using the Planwell system.  They hired me to learn everyones job so I can fill in if someone is sick or goes on vacation. So far so good although it's more hands on than prepress ever was. I rip, print and bind everything that comes in and some of these jobs are huge. The moneys the same as I was getting but the commute really sucks. It takes on average a 45 minutes to get home and I'm only going 12 miles. I just hope it lasts till I retire in 7 years. Not much time to post like my last job but I'll hand when I can. Just nice to be working again, as at 58 finding work isn't easy.

Looking for Work / Re: Shop closing
February 19, 2016, 06:47:36 AM
Thanks for the kind words and advice everyone. I've applied at 4 Flexo shops that do packaging but haven't heard back and since it's been a week figure I won't 3 of them are a long commute so they would be a last resort anyway. I also have a few other shop owners I now that don't need anyone themselves looking for me. I'm also letting all our customers that I did design work for as an Alma employee know I'm available freelance now. That would be the best thing if I could work from home just doing design.

Looking for Work / Shop closing

So after almost 28 years Alma Offset is officially shutting down on March 2nd. What sucks the most is being 58 and almost to retirement age. What sucks second is not much out there in this area in the way of printing jobs. Mostly Flexo and low paying copy jobs. No idea how we are going to pay the bills but hopefully something will turn up soon.

General Prepress / Re: Who's busy?
October 23, 2015, 06:05:41 AM
We are still hanging on by a thread here. So slow even the AB Dick has nothing and it's always been busy. Bossman cut everyones hours, took away a weeks vacation, and is now talking about layoffs. I've been here for 28 years and I'm gonna be 57 in January, not much out there locally in prepress either, I've been looking for over a year now. We still have no salespeople, bossman put an ad on CL but commission only so no takers. I got the feeling I'll be either on permanent unemployment, or a waver at Home Depot or Best Buys soon.
