Title: New Windows 10 PC
Post by: G_Town on January 11, 2018, 12:05:03 PM
Got my kid a gaming PC and want to protect it from viruses malware etc...any recommendations on what software to get?

Malwarebytes and the Windows built in Windows Defender.

The free version of Malwarebytes can fix your PC after an infection. The paid version prevents that from happening in the first place.

How about not hooking the new system up to the internet? That should keep it safe.

These days I only buy Dells. Got tired of building my own. Anything goes wrong with your Dell in the warranty period and they fix it.

I second what Joe says. I used to sell, and build systems. After the fun wore off, I just like to buy a system with a full warranty. But remember to do the system backups when you get them to make your system DVDs. Most people forget until it's needed and it's too late.

While building is fun, it is very expensive right now. Not as expensive as it was months ago with the whole bitcoin mining fiasco but still graphics cards are going for roughly 150%-200% MSRP. I very strongly suggest getting a pre-built machine. What are the system requirements for the CAD program?

When you do get around to buying, I'd suggest checking out Newegg.

I actually got a gaming rig for my birthday this year, just had to throw in my old graphics card which is really crappy so that's the only bad thing on it - my wife and some friends pooled money together to build me one since I've been trying to figure out how to swing it for the last two years.

Uh, Good question about the Sys Requirements! sheesh didn't even think of that
I get AutoCad for Free right now while I'm in school. Not sure but I heard it was a very expensive program.

I will get a Dell, check requirements and Video Card, and Backup as soon as I get it?
Scott, so you mean Burn disks of the OS? prolly have questions after I get it!

There goes that Bonus

I've had my current build for 8-9 years now and it's still going fairly strong, but I would like to rebuild a new one because I like to tinker. I can still add on to this one - I have room for about 16 more GB RAM and can still upgrade my video card, but the 3-core AMD is probably getting taxed.

Tracy. Check newegg.com like someone mentioned. They sell Dells and they frequently run a sale and they are cheaper than buying them through Dell.

About the disks...they do not come with any disks if you ever do have a problem and like Born said...it is too late when you do have a problem so the first thing you need to do is make an emergency system restore disk when you get the new PC. I usually buy an 8 GB thumb drive and install it on there and then throw it in a drawer until needed.

Sign up for their daily email. You will get things in it that are not shown on their website. They put a new one out daily. If you aren't in a terrible rush you should see a Dell on sale before long.

I'm not a fan of windows 10 so far. Nothing seems to be where it should be and since this is also a tablet I get extra bullshit. One day I booted it and the desktop was replaced by a bunch of tiles. Seems it somehow went into tablet mode and I had no idea.

Newegg and microcenter are my goto places for PC stuff. I'm not a fan of Dells because they are the ones I've had the most problems with. HP has been my choice lately. Are you getting a desktop or a laptop? Some of the newer laptops are pretty beefy and should have no issue running AutoCAD. Make sure with whatever you get to have a SSD and max out the memory. Either have it speced that way (more expensive) or add it later. My new laptop was slow as shit with the stock HDD but the SSD made it worlds better.

Joe's idea of a 8g thumb drive is a good one. I use them as well but instead of throwing them into a drawer, I tape them inside the case if it's a desktop. For laptops I use micro SD cards and stick them in the external enclosure I use for backups and storage.

Nothing a nuke from orbit fresh install won't fix. In fact my new one was a HP open box from BestBuy. They neglected to reset the password or give me one so I was locked out of my brandy new laptop. A few hours later and fresh install and it was mostly good to go. After I cleaned up some of the bloat still left.

You're telling me that dell ships totally clean, not even a trial of office or anti "virus" software installed? Not sure I can believe that.

My next computer will be a self built one even if it costs more. My last build is over 10 years old and has been underwater while running and is still fine. Yes, some parts have failed like RAM but since I buy Corsair I have a lifetime warranty. Last time they asked if it was OK to double my RAM because they don't make a kit that small anymore.
Title: Re: New Windows 10 PC
Post by: Joe on September 19, 2018, 08:34:36 PM
Windows 10, even if you buy a clean retail version, has the MS Office bits embedded in it. It isn't installed but the installer begs you to run it. First thing I do is uninstall that.

The only AV is the built in Windows 10 Defender and the only other software Dell puts on it is their recovery, diagnostics, support and driver update agent. All other stuff is from Windows 10 itself.

I have bought and setup 12 of these since the first of the year here at work.

Edited to add: These are PC's that have MS Windows 10 Pro. Not that crappy Home version which I believe does have crapware/junkware.

Tracy if you get the Dell make sure it has Windows 10 Pro on it. I've been buying the 3050 model with an i5 CPU and 8 GB of RAM. These are for office use. Not heavy duty stuff. Usually around $529 - $589. Tracy since you are going to be using AUTOCAD I would get one with the i7 CPU and at least 16 gb of ram. It will cost more but will be worth it. As farabomb said....get one with an SSD in it if you can afford it. A 500 GB SSD can be had for around $100. I saw a 1 TB on Amazon for $198 a couple of weeks ago. Also if you get picky with the specs I just mentioned you might have to order it direct from Dell as newegg.com usually just has the generic office PC's.
Title: Re: New Windows 10 PC

Well you convinced me to at least look at Dells when I go to get another laptop. I second the windows pro option as well. The home versions are always crippled in the most annoying ways.

I picked up a 500g samsung 860 EVO for $91 on amazon about a week ago. It's one of the best SSDs out there. There is also a pro version that wasn't worth it for my application but you may want to look into it if it helps with AutoCAD.

I haven't bought any Dell laptops recently so it could be different for those over desktop pc but I don't know why they load them up with crapweare and not their desktop models.

Tracy I checked prices at Newegg and if you want one with the i7 CPU and 16 GB of ram the price is double or more of the price I listed above for the i5 / 8 GB ram models we've been buying for office use. But as the old saying goes...you get what you pay for.
Title: Re: New Windows 10 PC

If you want to try and avoid the crapware, go with the business class as opposed with the standard home/small office. As they know the business class need to be down and dirty, and will usually have their own setups. SSD HDs are a great option, but as far as RAM, I usually buy the minimum, and then buy an upgrade right away from another retailer, as it is usually cheaper that way. And it's so easy to install. Plus it's always nice to see the insides of your new computer. But make sure you power up the computer first to make sure everything work before installing new RAM.

Tracy, about the disks, it is for the emergency restore disks, or like Joe mentioned, create it to a flash drive.

I've had 2 Dells - one new and one used, and not impressed with either (both laptops). The first had a multimedia package installed with "better" speakers, etc. but it had the damned noisiest fan ever! Even with the latest and greatest processor at the time, it was s-l-o-w!

The second was just cheaply made and got super dinged up with just normal use. It gets super hot and shuts down due to poor ventilation. It came installed with Vista which was shit. I did add RAM, change out he HD to 1 TB and upgraded it to 10 and it's still "in use today," but the card reader and camera don't have 10 drivers, so if you try to use them the machine crashes.

I don't know about Joe, but I definitely am! But like all things, you have to adapt. Plus I used to sell computers, and I can tell you, it sure was easier making money on PCs with their markups than with Macs. And since I was the network specialist for a typesetting company among other things, you have to know a bit of everything, which I learned.

And especially now, they basically are all the same, except the software that runs them.

So went looking at computers to try and figure out what model I want to get.
The sales guy was saying something about some computer don't have video cards?
I have my system requirements and I need a specific minimum video card.
He was saying something about the video being done in the processor? That's why I walked away from him. (not helpful)
Going to take my sys req to school with me and see if the teacher can help.
also how do you find the properties on a PC, I am going to check what the school computers have in them.
Title: Re: New Windows 10 PC
Post by: Joe on September 24, 2018, 01:37:35 PM
Many PC's these days have the video built into the motherboard and they use the system CPU and RAM which is not the best thing for something like AutoCad. So yes get something with a separate video card with its own Vram and GPU that meets the specs for AutoCad. Just make sure it has the right ports for the monitor you are going to use.

The best way to see system what is in an existing system is a 3rd party tool called Belarc Advisor (free).

Title: Re: New Windows 10 PC
Post by: AaronH on September 24, 2018, 05:46:53 PM
If you right click on computer under start, you can select properties from there and it will show the system specs. Not sure if it will show what video card is on them though. For that, you might need to go into the device manager, and view the display adapter properties. Even then, it might just show the series of card, not the specific series. so for an AMD card it would say something like AMD HD 7800 series or AMD RX 500 Series (Those are the better ones, the Vega ones are the best on their end). For Nvidia it might say something like GTX 1000 Series.

Which AutoCAD is the program you're looking for a computer to run? Autodesk's?
Title: Re: New Windows 10 PC
Post by: AaronH on September 24, 2018, 06:01:29 PM
This one would work for you Tracy. You'd need a screen and such but it has 16gb of DDR4 RAM and an AMD Radeon RX 570 with 4GB GDDR5 dedicated VRAM.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=9SIA7AB79A7047

That's the cheapest one with those specs I could find.

What is your budget?
Title: Re: New Windows 10 PC
Post by: AaronH on September 24, 2018, 06:08:11 PM
Since the minimum graphics requirements for AutoDesk's AutoCAD are a dedicated graphics card with 1GB of VRAM and a recommended 4GB of VRAM, I'd suggest getting any of the AMD RX 560, 570 or 580 or the NVIDIA GTX 1060, 1070 or 1080, though the 1080 is probably much more than you'll need, unless you're making a very large 3d scene. Still, though, money you spend now will lengthen the life of the computer before things need upgrading (theoretically).

I'm using AutoDesk 2019, the link is helpful, I can use that info and compare computers.
I have 800 set aside but would like to get the monitor with it as well.
Now I know how important the graphics card is, and defo 16g Ram minimum.
NewEgg does seem like the place to go.

an SSD is the most noticeable upgrade you can do to a computer that still uses the old spinning hard drives. I personally would not buy computer without SSD or flash drive. Still stupid expensive though for large storage. I have 1 TB flash in my iMac that added a few pretty pennies to the final purchase price.

The wife wanted a new, bigger TV for the bedroom, so we upgraded our 32" to a 43" and now I have a 32" TV monitor for my Windows 10 box. I also have a 24" TV for a 2nd screen, and in the bar computer I also have a 24" TV monitor which means I now have a 22" LG DVI and a 21" Dell DVI widescreen monitors with nothing to use them for. I guess if I get the iMac from work, I'll use the LG as a 2nd screen, but still have an extra monitor.

I really need a 1TB SSD for my main computer, since I use it mostly as a streaming server for Plex.

What has me confused is the Graphics Card
the specs for AutoCad says:

Basic: 1GB GPU with 29GB/s Bandwidth  and DirectX 11 compliant

Recommended: 4GB GPU with 106GB/s Bandwidth  and DirectX 11 compliant

can anyone clarify this in simple terms?
I've been looking on the Dell site, just to get a feel for Dells
I found this, the graphics card doesn't say anything like the above
Title: Re: New Windows 10 PC

The intel graphics is an integrated graphics which is essentially part of the CPU. Intel doesn't make any consumer level dedicated graphics cards yet (They're working on them but they are thousands of dollars at the moment). You'll want an AMD or Nvidia graphics card. The minimum specs are for a card that's a few years old, but the recommended are for a mid range card. Depending on how involved or detailed you get on your CAD files, you'll want a graphics card with 4gb of vram or more. The direct X 11 is a newer set of shaders than previous versions and basically makes it capable to do more rendering stuff than previous iterations of direct x.
Title: Re: New Windows 10 PC
Post by: AaronH on October 01, 2018, 02:07:58 PM
Basically, a dedicated card comes with it's own ram. That's where the 4GB comes in. On an integrated GPU, like the Intel UHD 630, it's actually robbing your system of it's own ram and processing power to cover the graphics needs, unfortunately that means your CPU processing power and system memory goes out the window so to balance that out, you end up needing a lot of RAM and a very fast CPU to make them viable in any way. Your graphics card's ram is like the engine in your car. More VRAM is more horsepower and torque (sort of).

The bandwidth is how fast the card can transfer information to the motherboard and back. Basically a speed limit on a highway.

Direct X is a rendering language and the higher the number, the newer version of that language. So if you had someone come in speaking Middle English, they'd have a really tough time understanding what we're saying nowadays.

A good alternative to a dell would be a CyberPower PC from Newegg. They're gaming pcs and generally have some pretty good price points for their hardware. They're not as expensive as Dell's gaming line, Alienware.

Yeah an office Dell for your needs with shared graphics isn't going to cut it. Also the Dell you posted specs for uses Windows 10 Home. Make sure you get one with Windows 10 Pro.

I've heard good things about a CyberPower PC. I'm going to assume I just got unlucky with the one that I actually bought. Kept crashing all of the time. Turns out the Video Card that was in it was the problem. CyberPower refused to replace it so I had to buy a different one myself. The internal network card never worked right in it either. Had to buy one of those for it too. I still have that PC but I'll never buy another PC from CyberPower again.

A gaming PC will be a good choice. Prepare yourself for the sticker shock though.

I've heard good things about CyberPower as well. That sucks that yours wasn't a good one though. Pretty crappy of them too to not RMA any of that. I've been pretty lucky with my PC. I haven't had any issues with it but it was a self build.

Tracy that's not a bad idea. I haven't played that game but you should tell them to check out a game called Hunt: Showdown. It's a pretty awesome survival monster bounty hunting game in the swamps of Louisiana in the late 1800's.

I am not prepared for sticker shock, thanks for the windows pro info, I was wondering about that.

do I need to be mindful of the computers ability to handle a better graphics card?
Title: Re: New Windows 10 PC
Post by: Joe on October 02, 2018, 08:18:34 AM
You can always add a graphics card but it has to be one that can use an available slot on the PC you buy. The specs you listed for the Dell on the previous page will work but as AaronH said, it will use system RAM and CPU to display graphics. And it will not be a good gaming system either. Attached is the specs for AutoCad 2018. Notice the minimum and recommended specs I have outlined in red. I outlined in blue the specs if you want the Ultra HD display which would require a separate video card. So for the display you want a minimum display @ 1920 x 1080 (High Definition). The specs you posted will achieve this but not the Ultra HD.

Also I am bugged out by Windows 10 Home....it will work but it might come preloaded with a bunch of stuff on it you don't want.

I have W10 on 4 computers... one is Pro for certain... not sure about the other 3, and no issues. I love it! I did upgrade video cards on my two main computers - the other two are laptops. They are both gigabit motherboards with integrated video, but I stuck Radeons in both with 1.5 GB RAM, and both are driving 2 screens.

You can install a graphics card later as another option but you'll need to keep in mind it will require more power from the power supply and most power supplies on computers without dedicated cards will not supply enough power and will basically cause the computer to shut down. This is fairly easy to get around though with a 500W or more power supply. You'll want a 80 Plus Bronze rated supply or more such as this one: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438101&cm_re=evga_500_bq_80%2b_bronze_power_supply-_-17-438-101-_-Product

For a graphics card, your cheapest option would be an AMD RX 560 with 4GB of VRAM and Direct X 12.
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131732&cm_re=amd_rx_560-_-14-131-732-_-Product

That basically adds $50 for the power supply, $115 for the card and tax/shipping if any.

OK Tracy this is what I found on newegg today which is a little above your $800 price point:

HP Envy 570 Desktop
7th Gen Intel Core i7-7700 Processor
8GB DDR4
1TB HDD
4GB AMD Radeon RX 550 Graphics
DVD-RW
Wifi 802.11-AC
BlueTooth 4.2
USB
HDMI
Windows 10 Pro

HP Envy 570 Desktop Tower, 7th Gen Intel Core i7-7700 Processor,8GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB HDD, 4GB AMD Radeon RX 550 Graphics,DVD-RW,Wifi-AC,BlueTooth 4.2,USB,HDMI, Windows 10 Pro (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAE4N84H4075)

This meets all of your requirements other than price and you would also need to buy a monitor. I would buy anything less than a 24" monitor and a minimum resolution of 1920 x 1080 (High Definition).

I could not find a Dell with more the 2 GB of vram in this price range.

It is not the latest and fastest but it should get the job done. If you really need more than this the next logical step would be to up the ram to 16 gb and put an SSD hard drive in it.

I have 2 DVI monitors I'll sell cheap. One is a 21" Dell and the other is a 22" LG. I got the Dell at a swap meet for $2, and the LG I bought new about 8 years ago on Black Friday for $110. You can have both for $50 plus whatever it costs to pack and ship them to San Diego.

Dell Factory Refurbished should be pretty safe but both the warranty is only 90 days.

Rest of the specs look good.

Intel Graphics 630 means it does not have a graphics card and uses system memory.

The one you linked is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB GDDRS which I think is a separate video card as it has its own 6 GB of memory.

Here is the same PC only not refurbished and has 32 GB of RAM for $30 more. If you have an Amazon Prime account shipping will be free.

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-XPS-8930-Tower-Desktop-x/dp/B077YSVGWQ?th=1

Be warned these Dell PC's only have an HDMI or a display port to go to your monitor so if you are using a monitor without an HDMI port or a Display port you will need to buy an adapter.

I had to order a PC yesterday for a new Xante machine we are getting and it needed to be pretty beefy. Newegg had a pretty good deal on an HP with an i7 CPU with 16 GB of ram. I went ahead and got it even though it wasn't a Dell as it was quite a bit cheaper than the Dell's with the same config. It also had the Intel HD Graphics 630 which I'm not crazy about. It was $869.99 and I got a 27" monitor for $109.

Not a bad decision. I don't usually worry too much when it says "factory refurbished" but twhen they only give you a 90 day warranty instead of one year like Apple does that bothers me.

The one at Amazon says about the video: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 Graphics (3x Display Port, 1x HDMI, 1x DVI), Intel UHD Graphics 630

So according to that it says it has a DVI port also for a monitor. But the photos of the back of the PC do not show it. And it does say the graphics are dedicated which means it has its own GPU and RAM so it isn't stealing that from the system.

That is cool! Taxes are a mystery to me at Amazon. Sometimes I get charged tax and sometimes I don't. Surprised you didn't get charged for shipping though if you don't have Prime. But good deal to you.

DVI is old school HD, but no sound; you need to run a separate audio cable. HDMI has sound.

Like I said before, I do have 2 DVI monitors I'll sell cheap. 21" Dell and 22" LG.

Quote from: Tracy on November 26, 2018, 11:50:22 AMkind of confusing that it has the graphics card and the UHD Graphics 630?

It makes sense that if it has an integrated video card, and then a separate video card. Usually the integrated ones don't have any oomph.

When you get the PC take a picture of the ports on the back and post it here so we can see what you have. The HHD Graphics 630 should be ports built onto the motherboard while the "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 Graphics (3x Display Port, 1x HDMI, 1x DVI)" should be a separate card unless it means the "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 Graphics (3x Display Port, 1x HDMI, 1x DVI)" is built onto the board. Even if that is the case it is still a dedicated graphics device that has its own GPU and RAM so it should be good either way.

DVI cable looks like this:

While HDMI cable looks like this:

HDMI is best as digi says.

Some monitors have VGA and DVI, some have VGA and HDMI. A few might have all three. The ones with HDMI probably cost more than those with just DVI.

knowing the graphics card I'm getting do I need to be mindful of the resolution of the monitor?

Title: Re: New Windows 10 PC
Post by: Joe on November 26, 2018, 06:15:25 PM
1920 x 1080 minimum which is high def. If you are spoiled by 5K on your Mac bring your big check book.  ;D

4K is 3840 × 2160.

5K is 5120 × 2880.

Really 4K or 5K is overkill if the software you are using doesn't support it.

AutoCAD System Requirements

1360 x 768 display resolution with True Color.

Sounds like it does not support 4K or 5K so go with 1920 x1080.

If you have time sign up for the newegg email blast. They have daily sales that are only available to subscribers usually with discount codes to use. Often I can find monitors in the 22" - 24" range that go to 1920 x 1080 for under $100. Usually around $89 fora 22" or $99 for a 23" or 24". I would not go below 22" @ 1920 x 1080.

If the clock isn't set right it can cause all kinds of strange things to happen. Our Prinergy tertiary server sometimes resets its date back to 2008 after doing updates. After that you can no longer access the network shares and Prinergy and Insite won't work. Plus it can't find the Microsoft Update Site.

But if I remember correctly it does take some time for the recovery to get finished.

Yeah, I hate clock issues. Everything seems to work just fine, except one or two vital pieces. And if you don't think of checking the clock (which who does), you can waste a lot of time troubleshooting an issue. So good rule of thumb, ALWAYS check the clock when there is a problem. Could save you a lot of time. Literally.

Win 10 comes with Windows Defender. That is all I use.

I do use the free version Malwarebytes if I have a problem with a machine.

I've used the same combo for some time now.
Defender and Malwarebytes when needed.

Just to clarify about Malwarebytes. The free version does not protect your PC. It only fixes things once they happen. The paid version of Malwarebytes prevents them from happening in the first place.

One of our clients is still using Quark (9) and is Getting a new Mac which apparently won't run on 9 so he'll have to update. I have pleaded with him to switch to Indesign for years but the fear of learning a new program seems to paralyze him. (he is 75 years old).

The good new is I get paid by the hour so I can milk this situation for some much needed OT!

I completely understand the guy if he's 75. I'm 35 and it takes me a lot of convincing to try new programs. haha
