How to freely distort text like a single object

I've attached a photo of an example of what I want to do. Basically, I want to know how I can distort a block of text into the shape shown represented by black rectangles. Can't seem to get it to work with the transform tool.

I would transform the 2 halves separately - the TE and the XT.

Thanks! However, someone provided a much more automatic solution in another forum...you create the shape you want the text to look like, make sure it's in a layer above the text, then chose Object > Envelope Distort > Make with Top Object.
