Update - Week 3 of the lockdown.....

Working from home is going OK but I have a lot of in-between time.  Online gaming is a great help but I thought it would be good to learn a new hobby.  A friend sent me a link to some free software for Modular Synthesisers.  This is what's keeping me sane at the moment;  vcvrack.com (pic attached)

General Prepress / Working from Home / Coronavirus

I was already walking 45mins to work so I didn't have to get the bus but self isolating has made us think again.  The boss is diabetic and I have immune system issues since chemo so we took the decision to close the shop to visitors and I took my work mac home.
We've actually been quite busy the last 3 days but IDK how long that's going to last.  I'm in touch with the boss via WhatsApp and picking up work emails so I can do the work here at home with no problems.  Most of our customers are in contact on email and I can keep in touch with them by phone too if necessary.
I send any print jobs back to our shop via Dropbox and the boss is there to run the printing side.  Deliveries by overnight courier so no change there either.
So far the impact on the business has been minimal.  So far.

yikes... all those years of touching up film... all those times i almost fell asleep on the light table...
those times hiding in the camera dark rooms and playing cards in the red light with the other apprentices.

i actually still remember it fondly

Ahhhhh....working 3rd shift in the dark room. Done that for far too many years.

Yep . . . good times   :cane:

Anyone see any reason to keep any of these?
I would keep the CS2 box and maybe the Pub2ID and Q2ID in case you need to kick the Adobe ransomeware into touch.

It is with great sadness to learn of the passing of Matt Beals on February 15, 2020. May he rest in peace.

I got it converted too but all it is a one page document with the words 'Thank You' on it . :rotf:
I didn't have a sample before. They managed to track one down afterwards. That's all it is. I could have just re-typeset it had I known in advance.

oh... THANK YOU

LMFAO  :lmao:

If you don't have Acrobat Pro, open the PDF in PhotoShop, extract the picture and convert the picture to CMYK - now you have a CMYK version of the picture to place in InDesign.

Macintosh / Re: iMac Lost Preferences

I noticed this with my 2019 iMac - the startup chime is gone.  IDK if there's a way to make your mac make a sound on startup (probably is) but the newer versions of the system / hardware don't make any sound on startup.  The same goes for when you reset the PRAM.

Actually he isn't banned anymore. When I switched the forum software back to SMF a few months ago all of the bans went away.

This website works well, but if anyone needs an alternative, I have been using TNEF's Enough - a free util downloadable from the App Store and other places.

CTP - CTF / Re: Fingerprints on Plates

No auto-loader here. Hand loaded into platesetter. I've never been able to narrow it down to a certain individual either. Seems to be mostly on plates where after they've processed we have to cut down on a manual cutter. A lot of folks will steady it by pushing down on it. Maybe I should require gloves when doing that process and see if it clears up any.

Thank you all for your suggestions and advice. I certainly appreciate it.
You've got fingerprints - it should be easy to identify whose they are with a loupe.

Macintosh / Re: New Mac Pro with PCI slots

I actually really liked the trashcan design.  Innovative self cooling shape and looks like something the Borg might have used with its cover off.

One good thing about the new Mac Pro - the old Mac Pro will drop in price considerably.  Current top spec refurbished model £1,749.

Very impressive specs and PCIe expansion capability is a welcome return.  Hopefully this idea trickles down to a new desktop tower for the rest of us, but I'm not holding my breath.

28 core Xeon processor, Radeon Pro Vega II Duo 64Gb VRAM Graphics card which runs at 1Tb/sec - you can have 2 of them giving 128GB of video memory and 56 teraflops of graphics performance.  12 RAM slots so you can have up to 1.5TB of RAM. Multiple terabyte SSD hard drives.  These are not even the max you can get.

This top of the range er, range is aimed more at high end video / audio processing and is rackable ffs if you need multiples of this power.

Not for us mortals you might say but if I had the moolah (and I was single) I would have one in a heartbeat.

Still using a non-CC version of the Adobe Suite here.  One paid for outright, so I can use it forever.  As long as I don't upgrade the OS beyond one that works with it.  :death:
I can see the attraction of the subscription model, but I was always suspicious that I could be held to ransom by it - I just prefer to have control over these things.
Years ago you would not buy a TV you would rent it.  They you on sold the idea that you could upgrade the TV whenever the newer model came along.  Nobody rents their TV any more.
