Gang imposition calculator

Hello all,

Here in prepress we often get handed a bunch of different size jobs that need to be gang imposed. We often then sit down with a calculator and a piece of paper and try and figure out the best way of fitting everything up on a sheet. This can often take some time. Does anyone know of any software out there that will do this for us? The only thing I can find so far is Metrix by lithotechnics but I am guessing that is going to cost an arm and a leg.

Preps Ganging is included wtih Preps 5 Pro as a separate application at no additional cost. It has been incorporated into the Preps 6 application as well.

I sat in on a demo of Metrix - it was pretty amazing.

Interesting thread/posts here...one by 'davo', in particular. It's pp, but don't be scared.
The gist seems to be that imposition is being 'absorbed' more and more into overall job management. I.e...being de-skilled, like a lot of other stuff. That guy Rohan Holt was involved in PREPS way back, from what I've been told. Lives south of here in a picturesque oceanside setting. This is only idle scuttlebutt BTW, unverifiable.
Keep hearing +ve. stuff about Metrix.

A gang imposition involves two or more finished sizes and quantities for each finished size. What is unknown is the cutting sheet size. The FREE Bradner Smith & Company and Quimby Walstrom Mixed Size Imposition calculator will calculate and display a list of cutting sheet sizes having the least waste from your entered finished sizes and quantities for each finished size. Each cutting sheet listed will show waste% per sheet, waste% over-run, waste% total-job, sheet quantity required, and graphical layout representation. The layout is exportable to Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and any other publishing application supporting a PDF import.
