Summa installer is onsite tomorrow, I picked up a Dell Optiplex that's likely way over powered but it was tough to find a decent machine running Windows 10 these days, and since I was given the company credit card so I hit up the local Microcenter this weekend. Intel Core i5 12th Gen 12500 3.0GHz, 16GB DDR4 RAM; 256GB NVME – should do the trick!

I'll get pics of the process, hopefully it'll go smoothly.

In an odd twist, I had to Force Quit Acrobat the other day (that's not the twist, obviously) and when I tried to restart my Mac it said it couldn't due to a "Pending Update in Progress" or something. Acrobat had forced an update in the background and I couldn't interrupt it, or it assured me chaos would follow. Guess I was spared this "new experience" at least.

You're assuming that they "ever" had a subscription to Pantone colors. Most of my files come in as RGB (including Illy), no spots. It's up to you to fix it and add the spot colors they spec'd.

Oh yeah it'll have a router when the parts arrive. I think it's a separate piece of the install.

Cool, good to know! Just to be clear, I'm NOT the Operator for this thing. We have a few people already that do all of the large format, they'll be trained to use it so it'll be interesting to see what software they'll be learning. I'll likely check in though, be kinda cool to know & I've already got a few "projects" of my own I want to try out once it's all going.

Of course, client needs banners TODAY and all they gave us was this low-res image of MLK. This is an iconic shot, but can't find anything that will scale up well (to about 8ft) without all of the background clippings.

New territory for me, we just had a Summa F1612 Flatbed Cutter delivered and for some reason they don't include the PC/Workstation to run it. The "entry" specs are abysmally low, so the sales dude just said "as powerful as you can afford" which really doesn't help either.

I'm tempted to get a slightly beefed up off-the-shelf HP or something, 32GB of RAM, a couple TB drives and a decent mid-range processor. Don't need a dedicated GPU, as it's really not doing any rendering or heavy graphics lifting, right? I know it will use Onyx, but not sure what other software is involved or how intensive those files will be. Am I missing the mark on any of this?

Tracy, I could see if the guy that sets our hardware up can work with you remotely. He's realllllly good, just partially retired and I doubt he would travel to your location either. he knows all the Fuji techs and a few "tricks" to get things connected as well.

He did our replacement Epson when the old one took a crap, and I know it was a little odd to get talking to XMF and the Profiling but it's all happy now!

Yup, today I hit the first Wall. 3c Pocket folder we've run before, came over from our Sister Shop. The PDF (exported from Illy) showed as 4c so I opened the AI in Illy 2023 (and also 2022) got the warning about spot colors and sure enough, it converted them to 4c throughout. The Spots were in the Swatch list, but once I turned on Seps Preview - POOF! Gone.

For kicks I made "fake" Spots called like xxx-PMS 383C, xxx-PMS-431C etc. and they hold to the PDF stage, I imagine they'd RIP too, but that's NO solution. Not with potentially hundreds or thousands of previous job files in our servers.

I'll likely do the .ASE import from a previous version for now (thanks Lammy!!) and I've already told the Owner we'll have to pony up for the Pantone Extortion Plan soon. I just don't know how easy it will be to implement their bullshit plug-in. We have less than 10 users, so at least it won't be too pricy. It's more the hassle and kick in the teeth.

FusionPro Expression is really all about image VDP, this sounds like (without seeing a sample) a live font swap character by character, no?
