General Prepress / look at me, I got my CS4
April 24, 2009, 12:55:07 PM
oh my...

just did the bloated install on my Intel Mac, took about 2 hours, man that progress bar moves extremely slowwwww.

why do you have to quit Firefox and MS Excell to install the CS4 suite? I had more programs running, but it didn't prompt me to quit those.

Just another Adobe weirdness, I guess.

Now, I'm off to see what trouble I can get into, see what works and what don't, It's Play Time!

Hello all,
I have been asked to see if I can find any published materials on the benefits and drawbacks of printing Stochastic.
We do it here, and have been for some time (not for all jobs, but a few).
We have a client looking for some more info to help make a decision to either go all stochastic or remain with standard screening.

thanks in advance for your help,
David

playing with Stumble, found this site for identifying fonts.
Don't know if anyone has seen this or posted it here, so I'll give it a whack.

A question from a co-worker:

Is there any way to keep Black only screens Black only, in a cmyk file when color managing in Photo shop? for example. I have a cmyk file, filled  with 50% black. when color managing in PS it converts to a 3/c mix with no black. is there a way to preserve the black?

Quark Xpress / arrrg... Installed Q8 yesterday!
October 09, 2008, 09:33:56 AM
man, talk about a PITA!
why can't you just stick in a disk, install, then go to work.
Noooooooo!
need a bazillion numbers, this is registered to another user, call Q on the damn phnone, wait for a bazillion hours to talk to someone, wait on hold while they get the bazillion number to install, then type in the bazillion number, whoopee, it's open, now to activate.
get on internet, wait for it to tell you you are firewalled out and it doesn't work, get back on the phone to numnuts and get the other bazillion number, and then magically three hours later, you get to behold the glory of...

QUARK 8!

ta da!

sorry, rant over...
go back to your normal programming.

Got a problem and was wondering if any of you guys had any insight.
Got a job that runs on plastic (no trees were killed in the making of this magazine, cause we ARE a green printer!).

The problem lies in the fact that the plastic actually changes sizes as it goes through the press.
The magenta is too wide at the tail and too narrow at the gripper, as is the cyan and the yellow, but they are all different sizes.
This means we have to come up with some way of distorting the files with scaling.
This can be a problem in itself, like how to scale the tail different than the gripper?

We split our impose files in half (tail and gripper) and send them over with a scale and then double burn them together to get one plate.
This isn't working too well, we really need to warp the file, like stretch the tail pages wider and squeeze the gripper pages to make them narrower.

We need to be able to affect the vertical distance as well as the horizontal distance and shape.

Any you guys print on plastic and have any experience with this type of problem?

thanks in advance,
David

PS. sorry for the long winded description, if I made it unclear, please ask and I'll try to explain it better.

QuoteThe Macintosh platform is again under attack by malicious code writers. This time, it's a Trojan horse that could compromise machines running Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5.

Antivirus firm SecureMac claims to have discovered multiple variants of a Trojan horse being distributed from a hacker Web site. The site hosts a discussion on distributing the Trojan horse through iChat and Limewire.

I got a Q7 file that "the desinger" used this POS font and it has license restrictions and it don't want to play nice.
I have Fontographer but it has been grinding on it for about 20 min. now.

General Prepress / Remote Proofing
March 04, 2008, 09:00:37 AM
was asked the other day:

Remote proofing a PDF file, how do you make sure that what they see on their monitor matches what we see?
Can't  we just tag the PDF with a profile?

My answer was that the recipient on the other end would basically load a source and destination profile in a "color balanced" room/monitor so the viewing conditions were the same as ours.

am I off or was this too easy?

Any you guys do remote proofing to the degree of color matching images?
If so, what are you using, Remote Director or what?

January 09, 2008, 12:27:54 PM
okay, I've been jackin with this thing for about a week now.

After updating the OS and doing a security update, now my mac Mail crashes randomly.
Sometimes when I try to print an email, sometimes when I just click on it to read.

done all the good stuff:
repair permissions
repair disk
run Onyx
rebooted
run fsck
reinstalled the combo updater and security update
checked console logs (kern protection failure, whatever)
checked crash logs

need a gun now...

any ideas?

TIA,
David

PS.

here is a portion of the crash log (the only thing I can see that gives me any clue to what is going on):

Esko / First in
September 11, 2007, 11:37:56 AM
I heard something from the Graph Expo,
there's shirts out there that have the Esko/Artwork System/Enfocus logos on em!

I didn't realize (which means I didn't know at all, or really care) that Enfocus was a subsidiary of Artwork Systems.

what does this mean to you?
think it will have any impact on any of the afore mentioned products?
