Quote from: frailer on October 24, 2008, 02:25:22 PMHmmm...interesting thread-jack. I think a few people around here need some of that "Lassiter's Ego Balm" they keep trying to flog on "A Prairie Home Companion".
Yes, probably so. A Prairie Home Companion, good show.

Quote from: frailer on October 24, 2008, 02:25:22 PMAnyways...did I reboot? Pretty sure I didn't; it was a last thing Friday rush. Shall try and at least do that first thing. It should be DVI-D to DVI-D. Proper ports both ends,
Could be a Homer Moment with the re-start, though. All I know is I'm a bit desperate. The last CRT is copping EMF interference, and shimmering intermittently. Causing aggro from a direction whence it radiates at the best of times.     I know one of those 2007FPs from DELL Outlet would do the trick, but we've just had a panic spend-freeze here. Like a few of you guys as well, I guess..   :undecided:

Budget crunches everywhere I assume. Other idea is maybe the cables have gone bad? Pins bent and such? All else fails, you can find monitors for pretty darn cheap these days even though they may seem like they were made from cardboard. I assume it's not color critical device?

Sorry, expecting fluffy stuff from me? Tough. I wrote in reference to the question, maybe you should too.

For the off topic responses this is my off topic response and feel free to skip it:

True about the ignore stuff. But I'm most likely ignored by a person who has nothing real to say anyway. So in any case, it's all good. I'm glad someone found enough time and energy to actually put me on the ignore list. Filled up part of their empty day I'm sure.
As far as my avatar, who ever said it was meant as screw ewe? I believe in making shelters for animals in need. Not my fault you read into it that way. And it seems that maybe you think I should be saying screw ewe to you. Rather presumptuous of you and I promise you IF it was meant that way, it was in no way directed to you.

Suck it up and get back to business.

Older monitors definitely have a chance of not working with a mac. Is there a way for you to try to do dual monitors? I also assume you tried the monitor on a more compatible system to make sure it's still working properly?

Updates are obviously just part of the industry. It's all a matter of opinion and there's not really a definite answer to this question. My opinion is that Adobe is coming out with full new releases too fast. The problem with this is the possibility of alienating its client base. Most people and business cannot afford to continually pay updates.
On the other side of the spectrum one may recall the history of Quark. Quark took forever to come out with updates. This too can, and did, alienate some of the client base. It's a delicate balance that changes constantly. Ebbs and flows of one's business will make it seem that the release is too soon or too late sometimes.
Adobe does need to come out with significant updates to their existing software and not charge for it or make it a minimal upgrade. Ex: CS 3.3. Fix and update what we have and not continually throwing out new tools, removing old tools and reinventing the wheel every version. Why would everyone want to pay for such things?

If you're looking for a definite answer, you will not get one. You will get a large variety of opinions but hopefully there will be a large consensus on one answer.

Updated last night. Nothing noticeably different yet.

Using Entourage in the office. Thunderbird was causing issues with our OSX mail server. I find Entourage a perfectly capable email program. Our primary email server used to be Eudora but it got out of date.
At home I use Apple Mail. It's always been a bit under featured, a bit clunky but it works fine for home stuff.

Windows / Re: Jerry Sienfeld & Microsoft

Correct youston. He's definitely not hip today but neither is Microsoft. Microsoft is paying Jerry $10 million and spending $300 million on the ad blitz. To quote Jerry "What's up with that?".
It will be interesting and probably entertaining to see how this all works out.

My, some nice in depth comments there. Microsoft is looking to increase the visibility and opinion of Vista. There could be worse people that they could've selected. It's supposedly an anti Apple ad in reference to the "Hi I'm a Mac" commercial set. I figure Jerry had a reason for doing it and I say more power to him.

Are you talking relinking or updating the link? Holding down option key when having all links selected and clicking the update button will update automatically without having to hit the return key 500 times.

Quark Xpress / Re: Quark 6.5 and OS X 10.5
August 11, 2008, 10:48:14 AM
Quark 6.5 doesn't seem to have many more issues than normal on my 10.5. Fonts are a bit of a pain. I always would get font might be bad error when printing but said go anyways and it always worked through our RIP. Since the upgrade, I still get the errors but it now errors out at my RIP. I have a work around but it's a pain.
Outside of that, it runs just as crappy as advertised.

It's all vector art too.

Edit: of course if screens are out... I should've read all the rules first.

Adobe InDesign / Re: Print problems with Indesign

I'm always going to suggest having a rip in front of a machine like that but I also understand the price issue. Often times with our 9800 we need to just rasterize the file in Photoshop. 150-200dpi for 100% size usually does it justice for us. Takes time but almost always works for us as a last resort.

Large quantity CD/DVD printing can be done on both offset and silk screening. The screen printing we usually did was at an 85 LPI, so it was fairly coarse. Whereas the offset is done at 175lpi with much nicer results. The ink goes directly onto the CD, no paper whatsoever. When doing the offset, most times it's using 5 colors, white flood then CMYK on top.
Worked fine with our standard .25pt trap. Sometimes we'd have issues with screen angle conflicts, pretty similar to standard offset paper printing. Playing with dot gain had to be the worst, it's a little harder to read off a disc than it is paper. I much preferred working with the screen printing stuff as it was usually 1-3 color and easy to make sure they printed right.
