Screen / Re: Maintenance Contracts
October 08, 2007, 12:54:29 PM
We didnt renew ours after the first year, and I didnt have to call at all the 2nd year, so I dont think there's any way I could have justified the contract for that 2nd year..

I even had to set up the platesetter for a new size plate when we put in a new press, but worked it all out myself..    the only thing I think I miss is the preventive maintenance that the tech would come in and do, like greasing and checking lasers and such..   but by already saving that 2nd yr fee for a contract when and if something goes down, it'll just cost us that amount(probably end up being less than the contract)..

I guess it depends on how much you are or have currently needed to call them..    I only had to call once the 1st yr, hardly worth the price of the contract.

Quote from: The Stevinator on September 20, 2007, 10:41:05 AMdont worry, i have a 12gauge too, with plenty of slugs.  but that's for home invasion.  im just in he process of quantifying why i'm worth more money.  so, this thread is good.  but it still sucks to know your getting screwed.

yep, just provide valid explanation/proof, that your value is higher than they are currently paying you and it becomes a win/win for management to "keep you happy/productive"..

GOOD LUCK!!   its time for me as well, no pay increase here since Nov 05'!!   :o

yep, me too..   just delete them with FF shut down..    I'd hate for my wife to get in and sabotage my online characters..   :ninja:

Tips & Tricks / Adding Bleed to a pdf.
September 17, 2007, 09:25:33 AM
Keep in mind this trick is in Acrobat Professional 7.xx with Pitstop 6.5.

Depending on the file, you can expose hidden bleed.

I use the wireframe view to see if there is image info outside the crop box, IF there is and sometimes there is.. then you can do a "Crop Pages" under the Document dropdown(command shift T) and check the "Custom" radio button, and then set the size to be larger than the documents current size.. ie. document is 8.5x11, set the custom size to 8.75x 11.25. click Ok. Do a save(Command S<- otherwise image will shift or has on me before, saving restructures the crop box, trim box, et al) then(and this is where pitstop comes in) you can select the crop box and delete it. This will expose the image that was before hidden..

This tip has been commuted over from ppf in sponsorship by ninjaPB_43.    :ninja3:

EDIT: and now has an action built to do just this:..   see Jon's post below.

Freelance / Re: Anyone working at home also?
September 12, 2007, 11:52:35 AM
I started my own graphic design company last summer, I would rather watch TV.   When I get home from my prepress job, the last thing I want to do is be creative and design..   yea the money is sweet and I do,  do it, when I have the work, I dont turn any down..   but I cuss them the whole time while I lay it out..     >:(  (kidding)

Im still trying to figure out whether or not I want to stay in prepress or go design full time, I cant do the design full time though until wifey finishes school.   I'd say I do about 10-15 jobs a year.  What's really fun is when I get to do the prepress on my own files..   I swear that asshole cannot setup files correctly worth a shit.
