Adobe Illustrator / incles and feet marks
June 16, 2008, 07:51:52 AM
This may seem like a REALLY dumb question but I can't figure it out.....does anyone know how to make inches and feet marks? I mean as opposed to the quote marks. I'm doing a bunch of labels in Illustrator with dimension like 2-1/2" ect but can't figure out how to get rid of the 6's and 9's. Surely I don't have to venture into that character palet again do I?

Enfocus / PC pitstop can't find Arial Bold
April 02, 2008, 08:14:16 AM
Sound like a theme for a nightmare...

I used to be able to embed arial Bold in pdf's with global font change but lately, the option to use arial Bold from the system fonts is not there. I installed the whole arial family in the fonts folder first. All the others show up except Arial Bold. I've removed them from the fonts folder and activated them through Suitcase but no luck. Restarted many times.... anyone else had this problem?

Adobe InDesign / output pdf rgb conversion profile
March 13, 2008, 07:27:24 AM
I was wondering if anyone might have some insight to this:

We're outputing pdf's for black and white books to go to a B&W copier and I'm converting to rgb through InDesign because the blacks are not dense enough when left at Grayscale.

Is there any way to pick an output profile to darken everything up globally  by say, 20%? The 10 percent screens are coming out about 5 percent, etc. and going back and altering all the elements (ie. Illustrator) is very difficult and although I've tried many profiles in the export function of Indesign (which DO change the brightness of the screen) I've yet to find one that's acceptable. It's like shooting in the dark and I can't help but wonder why you can't do it another way. Some of these books will be printed on an offset press because they are longer runs and they are similar so they all have to kind of look the same.

Any help appreciated..

Adobe Acrobat / creating multipage forms
December 10, 2007, 07:50:13 AM
I'm in the process of trying to make a pdf for inputting jobs that we print here with about 7 columns and 20 rows down to input docket#, date, etc. and made a form in .indd then created text boxes in acrobat

The thing is I had to rename each box like text1, text2, text3 manually because  if you leave them all text1 then whatever you type in text1 appears in every text1 box in the document. So the boxes on each page go from text1 to text140. This works good for 1 page but if you create copies of this page in acrobat then if you fill in text22 for example on page 1 it will appear on every page in the text22 box. So if you enter data on page 1, then go to page 2 and enter more data, page 1 will change to page 2 etc. etc. Now I realize that this could be the basis for a really cruel practical joke but I'm not a cruel guy!

Has anyone else had this problem?

Adobe InDesign / InDesign rasterizing whole pdf
November 13, 2007, 11:10:19 AM
Attached is a pic of the flattener preview of a file we have here showing EVERYTHING is being rasterized using the same settings we always do when exporting a pdf.

I've checked all the usual culprits to no avail. Some of the black text is sitting on NOTHING and it's still being rasterized. I've tried CS2 and CS3, tried many different pdf export settings...

I'm wondering if anyone has seen this before. I've also opened up a similar file and checked out the flattener preview and it's ok.

Adobe Photoshop / digital camera corpses
October 03, 2007, 12:03:54 PM
I'm wondering if any one else has seen this strange color cast from digital photos where the people kinda looked embalmed but with a sunburn. (sorry, cant explain it any other way!!)

I find it damned near impossible to make them look human again in photoshop.

anyone seen this?

Quark Xpress / Good things about Quark
October 01, 2007, 10:16:51 AM
Anyone have anything good to say about Quark for a change?

I do.

When you quit the application it closes quickly, most of the adobe apps take forever it seems.

Tips & Tricks / text to outlines in Acrobat
October 01, 2007, 08:29:31 AM
Here's one I use a lot....

many times we'll have a problematic font in a pdf, especially when printing to one of our canon b&w printers (the rip isn't as advanced as the Apogee).

You can convert all the text in a pdf to outlines but only if it contains transparency. So you add a watermark (see settings in picture) and make sure the opacity is at 0 and the convert text to outlines is checked then you use the transparency flattener and all text will be outlined.
