Yes, end rolls from the web press. Newsprint, book, premium...all uncoated. We haven't quite figured out how to make the ink stick to the coated stock so we buy a semi-matt roll for those. I'll have to check and see what brand that is.

The Rest... / Re: Publisher to PDF
September 11, 2007, 09:56:43 AM
What version of Pub? If it's the latest you don't need distiller. You can do a save as "PDF" but you have to download the option separately after you activate it. If it's an earlier version I agree with Tom. The toolbar has probably just been closed.

Quark Xpress / Re: i just had to!
September 10, 2007, 08:55:44 PM
Quote from: Kid Leo on September 10, 2007, 07:41:45 PMI must be one of the few that has had very few problems with Q7.  Installed fine, activated have been using export to make PDF's and all has been good.  The only problem I have had is that the autoactivate extension for Suitcase Fusion crashes Quark when I try to open a 6.5 or earlier document, so I turned it off.  The only other thing is the lack of keeping transparency live, looks like everything gets flattened.

Wouldn't want to use it as a creative tool any more but it works much better for prepress than 6.5

I've had problems with exported PDF's from Quark. Text missing on final output like bullets and web addresses. If you look at the PDF it is there although it is nothing you can select with Pitstop. Then when you output it is gone. If I go back to Quark and print a PS file and distill that...it is in the PDF, I can select it with Pitstop and it is still there after output. We no longer export PDF's from Quark. Majorly burnt on a large job last week.

How about "Color Studio" on the Mac. Late 80's - early 90's if I remember correctly.

Adobe Photoshop / Re: CS3 standard or Extended

We got Extended with the Design Premium edition. I could have swore the specs said we were going to get standard but it came with extended. Not complaining though.

Our "piece of crap color copier" folds and staples too. Can I call it a bindery line too?

Macintosh / Re: OSX on an external Hard Drive
September 10, 2007, 11:01:47 AM
Quote from: stargate on September 10, 2007, 10:56:12 AMIt's easy. You can install it on any firewire or USB (this must be intel based mac). I have os x (minimal plus diskwarrior and techtools) installed on my 4GB USB flashdrive, so I can boot from it and fix someone else mac if I have to.

Or just as others said: clone it with superduper or carbon copy clone (free). It works great. Just cloned last week.

Bootcamp will not let you install Windows to an external drive. I think that was what the original poster was wanting to do. Installing OS X to the external is the easy part.

Quote from: MonkeyBoy on September 10, 2007, 10:51:36 AMI use the software SuperDuper! that backs up my HD to an external firewire. I'm able to boot up off that external which saved me bum when my computer itself went down. I just grabbed another computer, hooked up the firewire and worked of the firewire until my other computer was repaired.
I schedule it to backup every Friday. Good software for that purpose.

Thanks for the link. I might have Bootcamp install XP to the internal. Back it all up to the external with SuperDuper. Then delete it from the internal. Although I'm still not sure I can boot from the external firewire into XP.

I guess ours needs a manual color copier/prepress operator to constantly handle it. I swear it's broke down more than it runs.
