General Prepress / MIS System Recommendations
October 06, 2014, 04:06:49 PM
Apologies if I'm not posting this in the right section, please move if need be.
Could everyone please tell me which MIS system your shop uses and whether or not you are satisfied with it?

I'm looking for honest answers from the trenches.

Avanti? Accura? Monarch? Presidio? PressWise? PrintSmith?

Thanks!

Tips & Tricks / Bryce 7 Pro FREE Today Only!!!
February 24, 2012, 08:32:59 AM
This promotion started 2/1/2012, but I've been so busy the last few weeks I've forgotten to grab these and tell you guys about it. Been a member of this site for many years and nabbed thousands worth of free software from them. They make their money selling 3D programs and content, every once in a while they'll give stuff away free. They have NEVER given away their PRO versions before so this is an even bigger deal. This offer expires TODAY so don't screw around, I just got $829.85 worth for nothing!!!

Register (easy & free) account at daz3d and keep box checked for "I'd like to receive links to free 3D content in the DAZ newsletter"...

https://www.daz3d.com/i/newaccount/0?

Once registered logon and goto:

http://www.daz3d.com/i/3d-models/free-3d-software?cat=1486

Add these 3 to your cart and checkout (they will email serials immediately):

$249.95 BRYCE 7 PRO

$429.95 DAZ STUDIO PRO

$149.95 HEXAGON 2.5

Then you can go into -> My Account -> Available Downloads and grab them (must be TODAY)!

Fonts / Free Font Converter
September 16, 2009, 02:45:46 PM
I have been transitioning art department in our publishing company to macs from pc's. DCS turned me on to an excellent free font management program for them to use... http://fex.linotype.com/download/mac/FontExplorerX123.dmg/.

It did an excellent job of converting all of their pc font library over except for multiple masters. I spent quite some time searching for a free solution, everything I found was commercial varying in price from $100 to $1000. Then I stumbled upon this... http://onlinefontconverter.com/. It's free, I tested it and it works. Enjoy.

P.S. It zips the converted font(s) and osx's built-in zip utility won't expand them, you have to use free Stuffit Expander to unzip them.

Tips & Tricks / JollysFastVNC
September 02, 2009, 01:19:45 PM
As you may or may not know, Apple has included VNC in Leopard, but they monkeyed with the format a little, so most of the VNC mac client apps won't connect (their way of saying buy ARD). Being the tightwad that I am, I found this guy's new version and it rocks, it works with Leopard's VNC, and is WAY faster than all of the others, and it can scale bigger remote monitor to smaller local monitor size, check it out (it's free)...

Macintosh / Mac Security
March 19, 2009, 09:08:40 AM
Before the fireballs start getting hurled my way, let me first say I'm a Mac guy and always have been. I've got a Plus and an 8500 at home that still purr away and I'm posting this on my PowerBook...

Looks like it's time for us all to start looking over our shoulders... http://www.networkworld.com/news/2009/031909-researcher-cracks-mac-in-10.html?hpg1=bn

Ran across this today and thought it may be of use to some. It's similar to the colorsync control panel for macs. It gives you a way to control your color management at the system wide level. It's free and it's from Microsoft.

Tips & Tricks / Free VPN for OSX, iPhone, Windows
March 17, 2009, 03:19:26 PM
If you use a laptop or iphone at wifi hotspots and need to surf or email without being eavesdropped, I have tested a clientless (no installation) VPN on my iPhone today that works well and the best part is it is absolutely free... http://hotspotshield.com/clientless/iphone/

I've also tried out the OSX version (installed) and it also works well and is free... http://hotspotshield.com

I'm pretty sure Joe already knows about this because he seems to have it blocked, so you won't be able to use the forum while you have it toggled on, but otherwise it is a nice freebie for you road warriors out there.
