Title: What do you furnish your pressman ??
Post by: impodave on January 16, 2012, 02:18:57 PM
What do you give your pressman to work from in the way of proofs -- Flat proofs of the press sheet to be printed, or in the case of booklets and/or folded pieces, a folded proof ?? Or both ??

In an effort to head off issues that result in plate remakes, there is now a new 'policy' in effect here that no job goes to plate without a folded proof, no matter how simple the job may be.

Though I've commented that a folded proof will not resolve all issues, the powers that be - a.k.a. The Boss and the 'Lead' Pressman - think it will.

     Comments, anyone???

We furnish our pressman with a folded down proof, "color accurate." Actually our yellow is off slightly, but in all my years, this is about as dialed in as I've seen, and it works for us. We only have one or two overly whiney customers, and we make them do press checks.

We do a low resolution folded digital blue-line, current with all known changes applied, as well as flat sheets in high resolution showing impose, mainly for color on press. The low res will be done to each sig in it's entirety with every round of corrections. It does save on costly mistakes.

We do a digital blueline and Epson, Spectroproof Verified color proofs that go out to the press with the plates. In addition, all presses bring a press pull up to prepress and hand them out for us to look over. I have the receptionist check page sequence while the typesetter looks for technical glitches and I check for overall color and quality. With all 3 of us looking, it only takes a minute. Something wrong, I run to the pressroom and shut them down.

All of our jobs go to the press room with a page numbered, trimmed & folded, 2 sided inkjet for pagination and content.
And also high res contract color proofs (epson or approvals), either from us or the client.  No exceptions.

When the press room is happy with a sheet, they bring it to us with the folded inkjet for us to verify. We will initial the press sheet and it all goes back to the press room.

Imposed PDF flats only. The pressman is the only one that checks the work on the press.

Thanks. Now, let me add a few more facts to make this more interesting:

1) Our prepress staffs' familiarity of how things need to work together mechanically is practically non-existent.

2) The only person with that knowledge (yours truly) has been moved to bindery and finishing, for the most part.

3) The two ladies who work on documents continue to get saddled with more and more stuff: Layouts for wide format work, actual operation of the digital press, walk-in customers, answering the phone, and their normal prepress work.

Maybe this should be in prepress rants ... :death:

We would provide 2 proofs that the customer would sign off on. Always a double proof. Not color accurate but good to check content and folds. Believe me, I've seen a job pass through 4 folder operator folded backwards. And there were page numbers! If there's no double proof, the bindery points fingers and I remember one time they tried to blame the pressman (Jerry) for running the job on a different guide. That was a hilarious day. After that on top of all his loads read "A FUCKING GUIDE" or "B FUCKING GUIDE" with a million arrows on the top sheet. Hahaha!

edit: The reason why this was so hilarious was because Jerry told me he didn't want the night guy entering jobs in Pecom because he always screwed up the guides and only I would get them right. So I purposely entered the wrong guide to be funny, and with an "I'll show you" attitude, he ran it in the opposite guide. Which was no big deal bc he did mark the loads. So it all trailed down to me being a smart ass.  :lmao:

The other proof was a color proof and only if the customer requested that it was color critical. Our old final proofer would replicate the dots that you would see on our press. I loved that monster. We sold it to G_Tone's peeps.

This sounds like the perfect time to prove your point/get what you want by letting others fail. I'm not condoning causing others to fail, but sometimes, those of us who know how it all works are taken for granted and taken advantage of. It is possible to be too helpful.

When we starting going down the tubes, no one gave a shit except me. I used to get so mad. I was so meticulous about proofs and plates. Why am I walking into the pressroom, see the press running and no pressman? He's outside smoking. Or he would be there pulling sheets and I can see a smash in the sheet from 4 feet away. Oh, you ran the entire job that way and you're on the second side of a work and turn?  That guy was nothing but a hack. And he didn't know how to enter Pecom. Bossman didn't want to do anything about it so that's when I stopped giving a shit in that place. And then we went boom boom.

Ear -- Message received.

I have thought of doing just that, but I guess I hate to see work get trashed when it doesn't have to, or see it take three times longer than it needs to passing through finishing.

On the other hand, what have they done for me lately ??  That's another long story for Rants ....

I hear ya man. I feel the same and in reality, I won't let things get messed up when I can help it. I recently had to prove a similar thing. Took three vacation days and was caught up before I left, I made sure of it. Day one, took a couple of stressy coworker calls. Day two, spent 3+ hours on the phone, trying to help them through rudimentary shit, that they have been trained on. Day three, said screw it and didn't answer my phone. Came back to crying boss and clients. Hey, man... one person literally can't do it all. And if you try, you will be harassed and/or hated when you can't.

Skryber -- I'm on the same page as you were.

1) Our lease is up in 31 months.

2) The landlord is my boss' ex-partner, whom he fired 8 years ago.  NO WAY we're going to be allowed to stay here.  It's all about territory, not practicality.

3) The lead pressman is the 'Golden Boy'.  Ironically, he has so much faith in this outfit, that he now works three day shifts at nearby Walmart Distribution. He does whatever he wants -- whenever he wants.  Doesn't matter who's feelings he hurts or who's toes he steps on.
This is the person that the boss was going to fire last spring because of his attitude and mouth, but lacked the balls to do it.

4) My boss will be 60 when the lease is up.

5) Haven't had a raise in over 5 years, our fringe has been cut significantly, no other printing opportunities around here, my wife has a good teaching job, and my house is paid for.

6) Ear -- I like the way you think, but it would be a struggle for this minion with OCD  to stand back and let it happen .....

When I assemble a proof, I fold it down the same way it would in bindery. If I don't fold it down right, I fix it before I plate it. Pressman rules it up after a few pulls and up to color. If he sees something he doesn't like, we get together and discuss. Usually this occurs before plating and on press. I try to follow a rule I learned a long time ago: "can't waste press time."

I make 1 proof - it is pretty much for color break only (pressmen run to "pleasing color" and also to ensure our company logos look good), and I fold it down and trim it. Actually, I cheat on jobs that don't stitch - I run single page proofs and back them up and fold/trim them. I know it sounds a little dangerous, but I always check the layout digitally using Apogee's light table feature - makes it easy to check trims, bleeds, and to ensure backups are correct. Also, much of our work are exact reprints. If a job stitches, though, I'll run a proof of the entire press sheet and then fold it down. Since I am a 1-man prepress department, I am quite confident in my decisions of when to make an imposed proof versus page proofs and I don't have to worry about someone else mucking up the system.

The pressmen do not rule up sheets to check anything. That has been a point of contention, but they are not required to do so by management so they don't! Most of them have never worked in a commercial shop and this is the only shop they've ever worked in, so they tend to have bad habits from living in a "bubble."

Because we are an inhouse printer, we don't get proofs approved by the "customer" (other departments within the corporation). They are approved by the CSR.

We work off approved Black Magic press proofs here. Occasionally they're approved from (pre-rendered) imposed proofs from XMF. 70% of our work is in-house. Fold-ups are rare. I try and keep an eye on imposition be checking every forme against the supplied impo sheet, by folio. Also try to make use of the 3D proofing facility in XMF, to check for page flow. This does not show missing bleeds, but can show dodgy crossovers, and other stuff you might not see on the imposed.
Yeah, skryber... outside smoking... not so much with our guys, but surfing the 'net! I guess 20 years ago it was pron mags.

We print out a small thumbnail proof on 11x17, fold it down, and make matchprints for color jobs.
The reason we do thumbnail proofs is because we have to do the proofs fast.
If we take our time to make sure everything done absolutely right, we get blamed for holding things up.

Bottom line, if we rush or take our time, it's always prepress fault.
Can't make pressman happy, can't make supervisor happy, can't make boss happy.

For each job we output 2 - duplicate, fully imposed colour accurate proofs. As it is folding carton work, we cut out 1 position of one of the proofs and send it to the client for approval. Once approved the other fully imposed proof is sent to the press for the run. That way client & press monkey are looking at identical proofs.
BTW - no problem with press crews surfing or smoking here. Smoking is only allowed outside with specific break times allotted and, after being caught surfing porn, all workstations on the production floor had internet access cut off. Most press crews are still made up, however, of prima donna a**holes. Only production supervisors have somewhat restricted access to internet now.

My boss hated smoking. When he left we would smoke in the shop but you didn't want him catching you at all. I wish he'd bitch that much to his smoker wife as he did to us.

We had a huge problem with night workers surfing pron on the shipping computer. I can't tell you how many times I had to clean viruses off it. I mean those fuckers would do nothing all night but sit on the computer and get paid. I finally put a password on it. Then we had a problem with people clocking in and leaving to go to the boat to gamble with money they got from selling our old plates. When we needed the money, we'd recycle skids of plates and earn a decent coin. It was a backfall. One day they weren't there. Pressman made about $5,000. Bosssman confronted him about it and he admitted to stealing and nothing happened to him. He continued to clock in and leave.

I can't believe how much the smoking laws have changed up here. As a former smoker, we used to be able to smoke everywhere in the offices, but not on the production floor.  Now it's banned everywhere. The provincial gov't has banned it just about everywhere inside where the public are and just banned it in automobiles where children are present as well.

Our pressmen aren't that blatantly corrupt. They have kind of a pseudo-union going on and regard anyone outside the dep't with distrust. They are typical of any pressroom and blame everything on prepress. They would, however, get fired for stealing plates to make gambling money or for leaving without notice.

The no smoking was also an insurance thing because we caught fire twice before the big one. We weren't supposed to smoke on the property period. We we're supposed to go across the street.

Smoking? Around here, and in Cali, there is a smoking ban in all buildings, including bars and work vehicles and smoking is prohibited within 10 feet of any door of any business. Also no smoking on the campus property of any public school or hospital, even outside. I think people are still allowed to smoke in their own house tho.

Once you get used to it it's actually nice to have a meal out without having the smoke drifting around. Not sure what Vegas is like now, but it was really different coming from here and going to places where people smoked everywhere. In long-ago days I remember when all-inclusives would leave trays of fresh cigarettes everywhere for your enjoyment. Mmmm...makes me want a ciggy again...

Around here, and in Cali, there is a smoking ban in all buildings, including bars and work vehicles and smoking is prohibited within 10 feet of any door of any business. Also no smoking on the campus property of any public school or hospital, even outside. I think people are still allowed to smoke in their own house tho.

Well, chalk up one good reason for leaving.

Hell no! I never felt right smoking inside and sure as hell don't want to be around smoke while I eat.

I miss it... a lot. There are a few diners here that still have smoking, but on the whole, it's pretty much a no-no.

When 6 hits and the Tweedles go home, I fire 'em up at my desk. I am much productive not having to leave to go smoke on the hour. I don't take a lunch break, so if I do eat, it's at my desk after hours with a burg in one hand and a smoke in the other. I really miss chain-smoking at my desk. It used to be the way of all print shops and service bureaus. Hell, when I first moved here, I could smoke while grocery shopping.

We are right on the border of Illinois and Indiana. A bar we like is on the Illinois side and they ignored the new not smoking in bars law but they were starting to get fined. So they built a room attached to the bar with only 1 wall and put heat lamps in there and there's a light switch with a window next to it. When you need another beer, you turn on the light and the bartender opens the window to get your order. Hahaha! The room actually has a foundation. Something about only having one wall makes it so you can smoke in it.

Even though I quit, I still think bars should be sacred ground for smoking. There's just something about a smoky bar that gives it that certain atmosphere.

How do they expect strip clubs to make money if they don't allow smoking inside? Even with heaters the girls won't be happy outside.

Man, did we get way off topic....

I guess I'll go with the flow -- Since those that smoke here are allowed to take a break whenever, I keep threatening to call in while on vacation and take an additional week of smoke breaks end-to-end.

Two ten-minute breaks a day, on the clock, adds up to more than a week each year.

It used to be that way here until they locked all of the doors and you have to punch out now for breaks. You can go out if you don't punch out but you can't get back in without punching in and if they don't punch out it screws up their whole time for the day. Now they have set break times. One before lunch, one after lunch. They still get paid for their break but they have to punch out and back in. If they take more breaks than those two they get docked for them.

Seriously, though. Everyone is allowed a break... paid. What difference does it make whether I smoke or read Sewing For The Modern Woman? I usually find that non-smokers bitch about the smoke breaks, but refuse to take any breaks themselves. Not really the smoker's problem. A lot gets accomplished on smoke breaks. All the good company gossip is discussed as well as therapeutic bitching. If I ever stop smoking, I will miss that.

Dave... hahaahahah! You posted right when I hit "Submit".

I don't take breaks either though some might say my whole day is a break (they think this seriously). Our problem here was that smokers were going outside every 15 minutes for a 10 minute break.

Take breaks... eat lunch... smoke, or sew, or make an LOLCAT picture or whatever... enjoy something during the day, otherwise, what's the point? Hell, I'm going to walk across the field and get a big coffee right meow.

People will take advantage of it every time. I smoke when it's convenient with my job. If a job takes me 4 hours, I usually don't smoke (before 6) until I complete it. I don't want to abuse it, I also don't want it taken away from me. I try to respect non-smokers... you know, staying far away from store fronts or crowds. Not flipping my butts all over the place. We all got to get along and I am the one imposing my habits on others. I try to respect that.

:ontopic:We provide our pressman with a backed up, folded proof that the client has signed off on. If the job is to print on coated paper then we run imposed contract color proofs.

:offtopic:The company does not allow any tobacco products on site. The smokers must leave the property to smoke or chew. They also must be punched out and on their own time.
