Since the economy has been in the hole, how many hours are you working now per week? If the economy has put you on part time, this especially includes YOU.

Goes right along with the quality of manufactured goods out on the market - what I refer to as "cheap plastic crap from China". 3-4 generations ago this country was the manufacturing hub of the entire planet. Has anyone ever glanced through an old Sears mail order catalog from the early 1900s? It's fantastic. Now it's just cheap crap made by slaves in China. I've resorted to scavenging antique stores for certain items because I know they're better and will outlast most anything new.

We don't print shit unless the customer says so and we hold them to it if they bitch later. Yes, you might loose a few to kinkos or the like but honestly do you want them as customers? The ones that send in crap files that take hours to fix holds up proofing the customers files that are set up mostly correctly. I am here to check the files submitted to me. If I feel the quality is not up to par it becomes the customer's choice. Used to be the salesman's choice but I've been burned too many times by those lazy bastards. We are a skilled bunch that while there is less work what is coming in is sub-par most of the time making us more important. I was called back from my vacation early because my backup, a former prepress guy that has been out of the mix far too long, couldn't keep up. Yes, it's a good idea to expand your skillset no matter what the market conditions but prepress is not dead just yet.

Local Business

If you own a local business in print, design or media and are looking to get more customers, be sure to get your business listed on major search engines and local business directories.  It's the lowest cost / highest impact form of advertising.  It may take six months to a year for google to start ranking your website higher and making your business more visible, but it's about taking the time to make a long-term investment in your future.

Well, Denny's is a prepress haven. So I've heard...

What you two gonna do, build some Publisher files all afternoon, pretend to try to print them, then start drinkin'? Sounds fun.
