CMS - Proofing - Printers / Moving an Epson 7900
February 05, 2020, 04:55:33 PM
Hello old friends...   I am in the process of moving an Epson 7900 from our photo studio to our corporate office. Its about a 10 minute drive. I'm wanting to prep the printer for the move and lock down any moving parts that can be damaged or thrown out of alignment...

I'm looking for any advice, suggestions, things to watch for, etc...   that could go wrong. We're just going to load it into company van and bring it over, so I want to make sure it's safe for the trip.

Thanks!

CMS - Proofing - Printers / Poll: Work Lighting
December 03, 2018, 05:24:13 PM
Research time and I would like your opinions and preferences...

My current setup (under review) is that my coworker and I are in a large storage closet style room (8' x 18' ...ish)  dedicated to color accuracy. We have a double wide viewing booth, and two desks. The walls are painted a neutral gray, and we have no windows. The door out usually remains open so we have some typical overhead fluorescent coming in - but otherwise the lighting from the viewing booth is on all-day every-day. We leave the overheads in our room off, and neither of us have desk lamps.

I'm considering switching us to desk lamps and only turning on the viewing booth lights while we're looking at proofs in an attempt to lengthen the life of the booth light bulbs.

Opinions? Thoughts? Considerations? Christmas tithings?  (all welcomed)

Thanks!

I have a 1-time a year uncoated (70# uncoated text) job coming up and I want to have my internal proofs get close to my printer's proofs and press.

I currently run Gracol on a semi-matte for all of our proofs and we are matching our coated jobs (almost perfectly) at several G7 qualified printers.

What can I do internally to get out ahead of proofing for an uncoated job?

Haha, ok I know it's not really "out of register" but that's damn sure what it looks like. It looks like the light light black is out of register about maybe 3-4 "dots" (1/64").. It makes the whole proof look overall a little fuzzy, and fine black type just a hair thicker than it should be. You can't see it until you look through a loupe or compare it to our proofs from the corporate office. I've run the Auto Head Alignment, (Uni, and Bi), I've cleaned the nozzles (numerous times, normal cleaning, power cleaning, & the secret SS cleaning in maintenance mode), I tried printing it both Unidirectional and bi-directional, I've confirmed all settings are correct regarding paper type, thickness, and tension, etc....

What am I missing? Why is this damn proofer out of register?

FYI - this is a proofer over at our photo studio, my proofer here at corporate prints the exact same file perfectly - so it's definitely not the file.

Also - the print head was replaced on the proofer about 4-5 years ago.

Any ideas?

I've got an old Macbook Pro (mid 2009) that has had multiple hard drives fail in the past year and a half - is it possible something else is happening (like a logic board or something) causing the drives to fail? Or is it just bad luck with the 2 drives I bought?

Is it worth trying a third time? I don't want to keep dumping money into failing drives, but also can't drop $1600 right now for a new Macbook Pro.

Any thoughts will help...

Thanks

I'm looking for some experienced folks working with variable images of high end photography...  photos need to be of people, not just product.
I need some advice of what types of alterations can be made to the photos prior to releasing to print to help get a better result on the digital presses.

The products looking to be printed are booklets, not just postcards - and in higher quantities.. so roll to roll digital printing not sheet-fed... (preferably in-line) so bindery isn't done offline potentially screwing up mailing sort order.

anyone - have experiences they want to share?

PS. sorry if this covered somewhere already - I didn't scour the archives.

If you recently updated your iPhone to iOS 11.0.3 - you MIGHT be having an issue experiencing an awesome new apple feature with typing the letter "I"..  it will show up in texts, Facebook posts, and other apps as a capital letter "A" and a square with a question mark in it.

Here's a fix until Apple does something about it in case you think you know better than Apple what you want to type...

http://time.com/5013082/iphone-ios-11-1-bug-how-to-fix/

Here's how to do it:

Go into your Settings
Click "General"
Click "Keyboard"
Click "Text Replacement"
Click "+" to add a new one
Type an upper-case "I" under "Phrase" and type a lower-case "i" under "Shortcut."

I would like the opinions of this fine community regarding matching customer-supplied color proofs.

Would the majority of you think it's better to apply small curves at the RIP in prepress so that your proofs match the customer's supplied proofs (assuming they are running a true color managed proofer and not some shitty laser) -OR- would the majority of you prefer to work with the customer to put .icc profiles in place within the design/marketing firm so that as they design (and sign off internally on color and content) they are seeing it as it will reproduce once it gets to your shop?

Another way to look at this debate -

Printer's prepress dept has MANY preset curves named by customer (the repetitive ones)
-OR-
Customer has MANY .icc profiles loaded named after which printer they will be sending the project to

Edit: I removed the poll. I'm rusty at internettzing, forgive me. :D

Random Technology / Wireless Storage for the house
November 12, 2012, 09:31:16 PM
Any recommendations for a wireless networked HD for the wife and I to both share with our macbooks? (storing photos mainly, but other docs and pron as well   :tapedshut: )

I'd like 500GB or 1TB...

What's say you?

I'm having an ongoing debate with a vendor that the panels should NOT be shorter, and she keeps telling me the inside panels will push out, or stick out further than the front panel...

I know for a fact I'm right(the paper isn't thick enough, I've done MANY of these before while in prepress - but want the community's opinion... and also wondering if there is a mixed school of thought out there amongst the prepress brethren... maybe this can help bring some understanding to those that "do it wrong"...    :kona:

Looking for Work / No really, I need a job
March 11, 2010, 09:13:37 PM
I am moving back to Texas. This time Houston/The Woodlands.

I do not want to leave, I just got home. However, the wife does not want to stay. CEENTA(Charlotte Eye Ear Nose & Throat - her internship) is poorly run and she has been extremely unhappy with it. Her internship is over May 4th, and they've offered her a job. She doesn't want it. They have a monopoly over the area here, like 18 locations around Charlotte. So, I timidly and begrudgingly agreed to move again because there is much more opportunity for her there.

Youston, the good news is, we can now shoot pool when you come home to visit.   :ninja:

E, err uhh wookie, climb down off that there mountain and move to the border, the troops are gatherin' and we need some fur camo.

General Prepress / Just got a new Macbook Pro!
December 14, 2009, 08:25:16 PM
I've been eyeing this baby now for 2 yrs.  I finally pulled the trigger.  I went smaller with the 13" and got 4GB of RAM.

I hope this will really light the fire under my ass for working for myself.

I want to know the community's opinion on what my chances are of talking Adobe into letting me upgrade my CS2 (windows education version) to CS4 (Mac edition)?

I know. They won't, but $1800 for the one I would want?

General Prepress / Light Table app for the iPhone
November 25, 2009, 06:55:18 PM
I just discovered "Light Table".  It's in it's infancy but realtime photos in a Corporate conference, drop it on the light table and layout a spread, add text. In the Appstore for iPhone.   If it can export .PDF....

Just sayin..

The desing technique is accomplished with "custom brushes" in Illy and can be found here, here, and mostly here along with others(just google "free custom brushes for Illustrator")..  Enjoy!
