Kodak Systems / Re: Prinergy 8.2 OSX Mojave
December 18, 2019, 11:29:21 AM
I just ordered two new iMacs and I know they are going to come with Catalina. Going to have to try and downgrade them to Mojave so VPS, etc will work. Found a few YouTubes on it...looks like it can be done most of the time. Easy if your Mac was Mojave to start with and you upgraded to Catalina and want to go back.

For our 4-color proofing and the 4-color Komori press, we calibrate those using the GRACoLCoated1_ISO12647-7_ControlStrip2009. The plates are curved for the press to match that GRACoL industry standard. We strip out any profiles in the customer files.

This way, our jobs should print looking the same as they would at any other shop in the country using that standard.

Make sure your platesetter and press aren't "drifting" which makes them a moving target to try to hit. Chemicals in the developer, blankets or different/inconsitent ink densities at the press, are different ways in which your target could drift.

Everyone has to wear gloves when handling plates at our shop. It's a safety thing as well as plate edges are quite sharp and many of the plates sizes are quite large.

The host file on a Mac or PC is kind of like a network phone book. Your Prinergy server has a name Kodak gave it and an IP address that the server uses on the network. You can help your Mac find your job server and/or your Prinergy server if they are separate by placing the IP address and the expected  name or DNS name that the IP address represents, in the host file. It's located from your finder "Go" pull down > Go to folder... > type /etc and the host file is in the /etc folder. The ideal way to edit it is to use Terminal but I have also pulled a copy out to my desktop and edited with Textedit and copied it back into /etc. Google editing a Mac host file and it will give you an explanation on the what, why and hows of doing it.

Did you put the Prinergy server's IP address/server name in the Mac's host file? Does Workshop launch but you can't "open job folder in browser"? If you get an error message when trying to open the job folder, pay attention to what path Workshop is giving you that it can't connect to as it will tell you what it is expecting...you can try adding that to the host file as well. And be sure not to allow the Windows 2012 R2 KB4503276 update to run or it will make it so the Mac can't connect to the Prinergy Primary using SMB...if you use that.

Kodak Systems / Re: Run Workshop in a VM

We just upgraded from Prinergy 8.1 to 8.2.1 and from Windows 2008r2 to 2012. Kodak asked why not go to 8.3 and the release notes scared me off, too. One of the notes being the Oracle database redo and the recommendation of Windows 2016.  Don't want to be a crash test dummy, either.

We do run Workshop in W7 Parallels and if you do the usual host edits for your primary and jobs server, it works fine.

We upgraded the server hardware at this time, too. We always pay Kodak to do major stuff like this as there always seem to be some curve-balls in the process...if with the Kodak guys doing the upgrade.

We have about 1300 InSite users. We used to do a webex demo to a new customer group. But now, the online Help is so good we seldom need to do this. We have an InSite 101 PDF that we can send out if need be as well.  It actually is fairly intuitive. Log-in. Create a job. Upload your file. Preview it. They can have e-mail notifications going out at whatever the step of the process to the CSR, approver, etc.   Non-Kodak workflows like Canon and HP that we have in the plant, can still use it as a portal into the plant and the files can then be used on these other, non-Kodak workflows.

Could it be the platen gap?
Adjusting the Platen Gap
If the print quality is not satisfactory when printing on very thin or very thick media, you may need to adjust the Platen Gap setting.
Note: If you notice scuffs on the first few inches of your prints, this is caused by paper curl and print head strikes. Make sure your paper is flat. You can also try changing the Platen Gap setting to Wide. If that doesn't solve the problem, try changing it to Wider.
Press the Menu button.
Press the down arrow button to select Printer Setup and press the right arrow button.
Press the right arrow button to select Platen Gap.
Press the up or down arrow to select a platen gap setting and press the OK button.
Note: To avoid damaging the printer, do not select the Narrow setting when loading thick media.
A check mark appears next to the selected setting.
Press the  pause/cancel button to exit the menu.
The platen gap symbol on the LCD screen changes to match the new setting.

One other plus for InSite is that you can choose to allow the customer to be able to download their PDF files if they prefer to rather than using SmartReview or Preview.

Quote from: scottrsimons on March 20, 2018, 12:45:34 PMJohnO, we used to have InSite, but had too many issues with it back when it was Java based, and many customers and management really didn't like it. So when it came time to do an upgrade this past year, they decided to axe it. Granted if they would have allowed me to spend more time in it, and with customers, it might have been successful, but I was having to wear WAY too many hats at that point.
I agree that it is really nice that it is no longer Java based. Much easier to support.

My apologies, Andrew. I must have been thinking about the Connect or the Web Services module or one of the other Enfocus product where I thought I read required sending the customer something to put on their computer. Thanks for clarifying that.

We use InSite SmartReview which let's the customer view the refined with trapping PDF. It hasn't been RIP'd yet but neither has a PDF if you were sending that. If they want to see a RIP'd proof we would send them an Epson 9000 proof sent as a tiff from Prinergy using the same RIP that will be used to send to plate. My understanding about the Switch PDF Review module is that the customer needs to load some software on their end. You get 5 seats so 5 customers can each view one PDF at a time. You need switch and the PDF Review Module and it runs on your server. I believe the Review Module is around $3600 itself. We have about 1300 InSite customers. Some like to page through a 2000 page book which is easy to do in SmartReview or the standard Preview option.

Kodak Systems / Re: OSX version
September 20, 2017, 10:06:40 AM
We are looking to upgrade to Prinergy 8.1 from Prinergy 6. Kodak supported Mac OS10.8 and OS10.9 for Prinergy 8.0 clients (Workshop) but only list OS10.10 and up for Prinergy 8.1.  I know a lot of times they don't list the earlier MacOS's because they didn't feel like testing it or the installer doesn't work and you have to manually install.

Is anyone using Prinergy 8.1 with Mac OS10.9.5?
