Title: Good things about Quark
Post by: pspdfppdfxhd on October 01, 2007, 10:16:51 AM
Anyone have anything good to say about Quark for a change?

I do.

When you quit the application it closes quickly, most of the adobe apps take forever it seems.

I'd have to agree with that, but after closing it down, there's no compelling reason to open it again :)

It's better at page layout than Microsoft Word.

I liked being able to delete all guides at once by option-clicking the ruler.

I like the fact that in the time Q7 takes to make a pdf I can evolve into a higher life form.

Me too, except that v4 wasn't much of an upgrade considering all the problems it caused over 3.7

Be careful with export to pdf in 7. Most appeared ok but a few didn't pan out for me, the graphics were lowres. Not all, only some and why this is is beyond me. I now print to postscript, distill and have not had an issue since.

also we would'nt have that delightful easter egg of the alien with the bazooka blowing up the little guy. It's such a classic that it hasn't changed since verion 3? i think. Stunning display, I watch it at least once a month

OK. So let's review.

Quark users are likely to become alcoholics and pill poppers.  Your wife is probably cheating on you and your kids don't even remember your name because Quark keeps you from ever getting home.  And unless you are outputting 2 color letterheads and business cards Quark can't even generate a reliable PDF.  The most common file format in the industry has only been around since 1993. Give them time.  But please take it easy on our friends at Quark......that alien is the best!    And it rhymes with Fark.

Downloaded the version 8 sixty day demo for 1 job that came in. Next time I had to use it, the demo had expired and if not for this site and DCS in particular, would not have gotten the job out.

So at least we can band together to overcome our Quark headaches...sort of like the west against the commies in the 50's and 60's. (or something like that).

I feeel wonderful right now.

For your information Pagemaker 6.5 will open into INDD CS5 perfectly. Now I can kick my G4 out the door. Yippee.

This week has been hell. My HD quit, kaput mid coffee slurp on Monday morning. F! BUT 1 day left in warranty and 24 hours later new HD and I began the task to rebuild my world. I have NOT installed Quark and do not plan to, letting a tear fall on my cheek. This has to be a first - I first installed it using V3.1 in the 80's and now officially retired it, at least until some bastid forces me to reinstall . Not looking for that battle.

Yeah what was that? I had a horrible week, too. Not quite as bad as yours, but not the average work week. The holiday crap that comes in, let's just say Desingers are getting RETARDED creative. I've seen the color Registration used more times this last week, then the last 2 months. And of course 877.... always 877. In process color, of course.

That's nothing compared to the shenanigans I've dealt with regarding warm vs cool gray 10. It's absurd and related to the thread I started about "please don't design business cards in Illy". In the past 6 weeks this one file has caused so much bullshit and wasted ink/paper. That's what happens when you have a desinger design something.

Awesome.

Someone here on the forum posted a quark tombstone which I printed out and have on my bulletin board at work. Just today a Xerox tech leaned over to look at it and he chuckled and said something like "I remember the day when quark was the bomb, now it just sucks."

Same here. We have one customer in particular that has been hanging onto Quark like a life raft for years. His main concern is having to re-learn a new program. I haven't had the heart to tell him he isn't that good on the one he is using (Quark). I think this week we've talked him into a new Mac Mini and CS5. We'll see.

well in my new field of business seems the standards in rips n stuff are caldera, postershop etc (afaik not appe based yet), and i had a fantastic conversation with the quark "fanatic" who said creative suite didnt work and the colours were always wrong from files that originate from creative suite etc. there were always little elements that somehow became tiffs and changed colour when he dropped them into quark and ripped em......

....then he told me postscript wasn't dead :banghead:

and he'd never heard of "appe" at all........as for "pdf rendering" - pffft you'd have thought he was thinking i was making it up the look on his face
