Are any of you charging for maintenance on the web sites or storefronts you either develop or are responsible for?
Do you charge a monthly/yearly fee?
If so, would you mind telling me how much? (you can PM me if you don't want to disclose this over the internet.)
How do you price out quotes for building web sites or storefronts?
by page, coding hours, etc?

It has been requested of us to make certain modifications specifically tailored towards specific users on our storefront site. The owner has told these customers we'll do whatever they want, but it will cost them a monthly fee and an initial setup charge. So far, no one has agreed to sign a contract, but we have one bank who may pull the trigger.

I think he told them $1500 for initial setup and $150 a month maintenance. We charge $60 an hour on the fly currently for small re-writing of code in PDFLib blocks (this happens a lot with the bank customer).
I charge a flat $30 per hour which is pretty cheap imo. The sites I've done don't have any maintenance schedule. If they are having problems they usually email me and ask me to fix it where the $30 per hour then kicks in.
On the other hand I'd be happy to charge a monthly fee if I could find someone willing to pay it to me.
As far as quotes. I usually just price based on how many hours I think it will be and pad a few extra hours on it and always tell them that depending on how it goes it could be more or less. I insist on that because rarely do they NOT start adding features and options during the process that weren't mentioned in the original quote and I want to make it plain that they have to pay for the actual hours spent instead of locking in a price up front. Just like in printing you can't trust them. And I insist on 50% up front for new clients. Once established I might back off on that demand.
Apparently we do website development & maintenance for free. Go ahead, send your customers to me, I love the work. :sarcasm:
