Digital Printing / Re: FusionPro VDP Producer
June 05, 2014, 01:03:46 PM
FusionPro's new naming scheme has made their offerings a little confusing. Basically it's Creator > Producer > API. Creator is the desktop Acrobat plugin. Producer, from my understanding, is basically just the composition engine running on another workstation on-site. API is their web2print offering which is hosted off-site. Producer is useful if you run really long complex jobs and want to off-load that to a different machine. It also gives you the option to pause and prioritize running jobs. If you have jobs that typically take more than an hour to finish composing Producer is something you might want to look at. Although with 4 licenses I'm sure you can move these long running tasks to one of the workstations that is idle. From some of the sample files I sent PTI, Producer was able to process them 3-4x quicker than my workstation. And the pricing reflects that.

A quick solution. Insert a new column after ColumnA. Copy ColumnA to ColumnB. Copy both columns and paste into a text editor (I prefer TextWrangler on OSX). Replace all tab characters with a return character (in TextWrangler it would be \t for tabs and \r for return). Copy and paste back into excel and delete the ColumnB that you made earlier.

The Rest... / Re: Any FusionPro users out there?

Also, a little tip. If you need to make a change to the static portion. Make the change in InDesign and re-export the PDF through the Fusion Pro panel and overwrite your previous PDF. All of the variable boxes will be retained from the original, but the static will be newly updated.

And one more just for kicks. If you're going to be using the same PDF with different data sources and you're using rules make sure you convert the rules to javascript. For some reason (at least on version 6.2) they'll be deleted when you define a different data source if they're not javascript.

I'll just point out then that my way allows you to ignore the repeat record field during composition so that you can proof each individual ticket without telling it compose a whole bunch of times. And, the database is easier to create since you're creating one that is only 432 records instead of over 11,000.

Take your 432 page pdf and split it into individual PDFs. Make an excel document with Column A with the name of the PDFs that contain the front of the ticket Column B can be the back of the ticket. Column C is the repeat count (how many times each ticket should be printed). Save the excel doc as a csv. Make a new .indd with a variable graphic on front and back, and variable text boxes where the numbering goes. Export to Fusion. Create an "Insert Picture Rule' for the front and back PDFs. Create an onrecord start rule for the repeat count. Where the sequential numbering goes make it "$outputrecordnumer". Compose with your imposition scheme.

30 minutes tops.

I believe it will highlight the traps that are made if the PDF has been trapped by PDFTrap in the PDFReady Task Processor. It's a separate license from Trap in the PDFRender Task Processor.

I've done it many times with the original Azura plates, and haven't seen anything bad creep up.

Yes, it seems like there is no absolutely compatible software to work with wps files on a mac...

Kodak Systems / Re: OK, what do I need to do this?
March 22, 2010, 09:18:43 AM
Why not create the job twice and manually double burn the plates? Simply create the imposition twice, on imposition A have the artwork on the right with a big box on the left filled with registration. And for imposition B flip it. So with your positive plates it won't burn the area that needs to be artwork?

Granted this way you have to manually feed the plate twice into the platesetter. And you have to tell the workflow to only burn one separation from each imposition, but it should work somewhat painlessly.

I don't have any personal experience with it, but you may want to give Preproofer a look. It uses two Epson printers in line to print on both sides of the sheet.

I know this is an old post, but as I'm just starting to jump into G7 calibration myself...

Anyway, if you go to gracol.com there's a link for the "G7 & GRACoL Qualification Kit 2010" that's been updated, contains alot of info, and even step by step instructions.
http://files.idealliance.org/GRACoL/Qualkit/G7QualificationKit_GRACoL.zip

Unfortunately, you have to use a G7 Expert to submit your datasets to IDEAlliance.
