This is actually kinda fun, but it shows how to build apps for Android phones. If you don't happen to have an Android phone, it has a built in emulator.

The best part, it's free.

Macintosh / USB Bluetooth Adapter
July 19, 2011, 01:03:46 PM
I thought I was lucky, cause I just got a new Magic Trackpad.
The downstairs IT guy got a couple to play with and gave me one (knowing I have an Intel Mac and all).
Bummer is, I don't have Bluetooth on my Mac, it's pre- whenever they started putting it on all Macs.

Now I'm looking for a USB Bluetooth adapter.
The Apple website recommends the D-Link DBT-120 USB Bluetooth adapter (rev. B2 or later), but sadly it is no longer available.

SOOOO, any of youse guys know of one that works well with Mac OS (10.6.8)?

The Rest... / Postnet Code scanner for iPhone
June 09, 2011, 02:17:18 PM
any of you guys know of a good postnet code scanner that works on an iPhone (or any smartphone for that matter)?

Not a UPC, or a QR, but a Postnet code, you know, for the zip plus four codes on BRC cards and mailers. If you're into variable data, direct marketing, web to print, you may have something already and not know it.

thanks in advance

May 23, 2011, 10:02:00 AM
I'm looking for any inkjet printer that will print fluorescent pink and of course I will need the inkjet cartridge for the printer.

so far, all I've found is a set from SubliJet IQ for the Epson 4880.

Is this the only one?

General Prepress / 1D barcodes for Web URL's
April 21, 2011, 10:02:04 AM
ok new project.

somebody here "heard" about a traditional bar code (I'm assuming from the phrase they mean a 1D code as opposed to a 2D or QR code) that you can scan with your smart phone that will launch a web browser and take you to a web site.

As a reference, it was supposedly a coke product that had a scannable upc code with a url link. (I can't find it... yet)

Anyone know of the software or company doing this?

the goog is not much help with this.

Adobe Photoshop / Flatbed Scanner replacement
March 10, 2011, 03:37:32 PM
I got a Microtek Scanmaker S440 that just died (I think a power outage bit it). Got it on the bench and have it apart to see if I can "fix" it.
Any good recommendations for a reasonably priced flatbed scanner?

Requirements:
1. needs to do up to A4 size at a good res
2. email capable
3. transparency scanning not a must, but would be nice
4. makes a mean peanut butter & jelly sammich

Windows / Server 2003 - how to boot from mirror
November 02, 2010, 02:45:53 PM
okay, I've rebuilt one of my RIPs running Server 2003.
I've got a two drive mirror (2 150 gb drives).
I want to test it to see if it would boot from the mirror.
I have pulled the disk0 out of the bay and restarted, all I get is a blinking cursor.
This box has no floppy drive.

my question, do any of you have instructions on what I need to do to get it to boot from the mirror?
MS keeps pointing to Win XP for instructions on booting from a mirror, but XP is not 2003.

Kodak Systems / Kodak XPO Message
October 15, 2010, 01:51:09 PM
Any of you Evo users ever get a message on the Evo Production Manager telling you that the "Configuration Update was complete"?
We've been getting these lately and it's causing the Lotem to lock up and stop imaging plates and the Evo box has to be restarted to correct the problem.
I don't see anywhere on the box to turn off the updates (whatever they are) or to keep them from happening.

any clues?

General Prepress / Anaglyph 3D software
May 03, 2010, 08:50:35 AM
I know, it's not prepress, but it is... kinda

Looking for software to create 3d anaglyph images, for a Mac or PC
doesn't have to be free (there are a butt load of free ones on google, most are older than dirt)

don't need the glasses, just the software
wanting to be able to use layers to create more depth between various portions of an image (like foreground, near foreground, middle, near background, and far background)
anybody doing this, got some software that you like?
any recommendations?

thanks in advance,
David

Macintosh / Blinking ? on start up
March 11, 2010, 08:28:24 AM
okay, got a co-workers G5 that now has the blinking question mark when you try to boot it up.
Tried to just let it go (blinking, hoping that eventually it would find a boot drive and start up) and it just shut down after about 15 minutes.
Mounted the G5 in Target disk mode, deleted a few things, still no go.
Can't get it to open the CD drive so I can put the OS install disk in.

Any profound advice other than chunk it off the shipping dock?

TIA,
David

Okay, looking for any and all Prinect users.
What do you have and are you happy, not happy, need more, need less?
How do you like the imposition?
Does the trapping work like you hoped?

I got one here for you...

using Quark 8 and spec'ing colors with the Pantone Color Bridge CMYK swatches.
Export a PDF file and inspect it in Pitstop...
you get LAB values, not CMYK (even tho' it's called a CMYK library), anybody know what's up with that?
have you run across it before?
did you have trouble matching it on a proof/press?

inquiring minds want to know.
thanks,
David

Kodak Systems / Prinergy - did you over buy or under buy
February 15, 2010, 11:29:19 AM
Been asked to post a question here for more feedback.
All you Prinergy users, if you don't mind, please:

What did you get, and what did you not get?
Did you get too much, not enough?
Now that you have it, is there something else you wished you would have gotten instead?
What would you do different if you had a choice?
I know, most of you don't control the purse, just asking for wishful thinking here, money no object, humor me.

thanks in advance for your help,
David

Quark Xpress / Quark 8.1 updater
August 04, 2009, 12:48:55 PM
got the email today from Quark telling me the new download that will save the world is ready.
So I check out the "list" of enhancements (http://8.quark.com/techinfo/known_issues.html):
a few excerpts:
1.If you import a PDF with native transparency and then print the layout, problems such as lost overprints or incorrect flattening may occur.
2. If you try to export a PDF of a layout with an extremely large number of imported EPS files, QuarkXPress may not be able to complete the export.
3. If you use Adobe Illustrator to create a PDF or Illustrator file containing rounded letters (such as C or G) in front of a colored object with an opacity less than 100%, import the PDF in QuarkXPress, and then output the layout, some of the letters may be clipped across the top.
4. (Mac OS only) You cannot increase the leading by 1/10 pt using the Command+Option+" keys unless you press and hold them for two seconds or longer.

etc. etc. etc

The list is very loooong and I was getting verrrry sleeepy....

Adobe InDesign / colorize a grayscale in ID CS4
May 04, 2009, 10:52:10 AM
did a search and came up empty, so...

got a file from client with a grayscale .psd file placed and colorized to pms 877.
It's done the right way, selected with the direct selection tool and colored with a spot pms 877.
Should be good to go, except...
it comes out black.
Sep preview shows it as black
pdf has it as black.

So, how do you make a grayscale image colorized correctly in Indesign and actually print that way?

thanks,
David, the one who is now rightfully insane
