Quote from: Joe on November 01, 2007, 12:59:11 PMI've got a brand spanking new 250 gb SATA drive for my G5 just begging for a Leopard install!
Do you have MacPro? Can you download and run XBench on it now? In Tiger and later in Leo. Can you tell me CPU number and overall score?

Yes, it is a MacPro. I'll try it if I get a chance to install Leo on it tonight.

Quote from: kermit on November 01, 2007, 01:15:25 PMMy Leo iMac 2.16 with 3GB RAM was 124.97 as CPU and 125.58 overall before Leo it was 111.88 for CPU and 124.98 overall.

I've got the exact same iMac configuration as you. I'll have to throw Xbench on it and see if the scores are close.

124.97 as CPU and 125.58 overall was with Leo, correct?

And 111.88 for CPU and 124.98 overall was with Tiger (or Panther)?

Same type of XBench results on my PowerMac G5:

Tiger -       CPU: 87.62     Overall: 63.80  (Not a fresh install at all)

Leopard -   CPU: 78.75     Overall: 47.41  (Fresh install)

I suppose that is Apples way to get everyone to buy new Intel powered Macs. :(

XBench results on my iMac 2.16 gHz dual core with 3 GB of RAM:

Tiger -       CPU: 108.89     Overall: 117.56  (Not a fresh install at all)

Leopard -   CPU: 124.08     Overall: 120.87  (Fresh install)

I would conclude that on the Intel Chip the modest performance gain is probably due to the fact the Leopard install is a fresh install while the Tiger install is not fresh.

On the PowerPC side the conspiracy theorist in me concludes Apple has probably throttled down the performance to drive consumers to buy new Intel powered Macs (ICBM's as Jezza would say. That still cracks me up)  ;D

The rational side tells me the performance hit on the Power PC side is probably due to the fact Apple spent a lot more time optimizing it for the Intel chips and taking advantage of the dual core chips capabilities.

I would not put Leopard on a G4 and probably on very few G5's.

I'm not sure about throttling back, probably just a by product of optimization. You can't really blame apple for that, obviously it's in their interests that people go buy an ICBM ( :D )

If a get me ld mac back (T-Book) and it isn't a complete right off (as I have been told it is) then it will have a clean install of tiger and I'll let you know...

fek, I meant Leopard
