I have an emblem which was created in illustrator. The emblem is in created from two pieces and when I use the pathfinder I get poor results...I was able to combine the emblem by nudging them closer together and was able to make the golfer transparent. However, I need to make the "golfer and the white border transparent. The white border is a shape with a stroke...so when I blaze a path is knocks out the entire shape and not just the rule. What I am missing...I have been clicking, clicking, clicking, all the different options multiple times, even though I did see DCS's graphic, just maybe I can create a digital anomaly. I have attached a gif...alas the illustrator file is too large.

Sounds like it might be a compound path problem. Ungroup, and remove the compound path and see what happens.

Thanks, but still can't get the rule transparent.

Sounds like you need to get the stroke to be its own shape, rather than a stroke of another object. Select it and try something like Object>Path>Outline Stroke. The you should be able to use it to punch through the shield.
