Title: Cable speeds
Post by: frailer on March 24, 2012, 12:07:09 AM
Seems to have slowed, but erratically, lately.  Here's a shot of speed test this afternoon when I thought it slow. We're on Tesltra Bigpond cable here. But am sure there's cable, and then there's...CABLE; when it comes to speed. Want to try and work out if it's something homey, or ISP related.   :undecided:
Have tried pulling power on modem (about a year old), leaving a few minutes, then re-plugging. Seems to help sometimes. What are the chances of it being ISP's service fluctuating. I guess could be one or more of a dozen things.

Your download speed is better than mine. I'd love to have that. Your upload speed is nothing to write home about but unless you do a lot of uploading or online gaming you probably would never notice it. You upload speed is almost always slower than your download speeds though there are ISP's that have the same for both. What download speed should you be seeing?

The problem almost always is with something upstream from you unless your modem is going out. The only way to test that is to try a different modem. I would think it's not a common problem for a modem to go bad.

It could be a faulty modem (easy to check), or an intermittent fault on the cable reducing capacity (good luck getting that checked).  The cause could also be local traffic volumes.  Do you have a school nearby and have they just upgraded anything?  Or a new Internet Cafe in the neighbourhood?

I'm on Virgin Media in UK and I'm getting 12mbps download on an advertised 10mbps cable tariff.  They are in the process of doubling this to 20mbps FOR FREE !!!  This sounds good but its still about one eighth of what is common in France.

Well, it's kinda come good.     Our rollover date for the monthly usage is 16th. At first I thought maybe we'd been slowed, but when I checked, we were way under our 200GB/month. Am thinking more and more it's random ISP variability. The worst of the slowmos seem to have gone.
Current test below.

You work with me?

I have informed my superiors we need faster internet. We've got too many customers uploading and viewing files to get by with our 3 MBPS connection. Customers are starting to whine.

Good, I told all my customers to call your place and complain about the internet speeds. I got tired of all the phone calls.

We're paying like $800 a month for a dual dedicated 1.5 mbps line from AT&T. The problem is that there aren't many providers in the area. Charter doesn't quite make it out to where the plant is on the outskirts of town.

Most of our clients stopped complaining, now they just use their own hosting service & we have to pull those huge files across our crappy connection. Either that or they just went to other shops that are more concerned with maintaining a professional service.
