CTP - CTF / Re: Toughest thermal plate?

Soy based inks are huge in the whole green movement business. They produce pretty good results. In my opinion nothing beats the quality of good old environmentally dangerous inks, but the soy based products are not that bad. I also find that soy based ink is pretty cost-effective.

As far as plates go, I'm not sure about which ones are the toughest, but we use Kodak Gold and have had no problem with them. I guess maybe switch to those if you are having problems with plate durability? We do a lot of runs and they never seem to lose their structural integrity.

Adobe Photoshop / Re: Adobe® Photoshop® CS6

True story. I suppose I'm purely speaking from the angle of Photoshop, which I myself don't find myself using a whole heck of a lot. My only hope is that the rest of CS6 takes a little longer to get updated (or InDesign and Acrobat, not being upgraded in such a fashion that it would matter) fully.

In all honesty, CS6 is probably an inevitability, but upgrading just hurts every time. A lot.

The price one pays for being on the cutting edge of technology. I don't think I've ever been angry after upgrading my CS. Well at least not after I've had some time to get over it.

Freelance / Re: New to Freelance

Unfortunately most of the freelance work is left for the graphic designers. Most people aren't going out looking for people to simply print their brilliant design, they just know they want a logo that looks pretty.

I have heard of some freelance gigs on certain sites (Craigslist comes to mind) for people who know the difference between designing a graphic and making it print properly. Aside from these sites which are often sparse as far as legitimate and reasonably paid job postings, you may want to contact some graphic design firms and see if they have received an influx of people asking them to print their designs.

I get so many people trying to tell me what they want done to their design and have to refer them to a graphic designer, I assume the door swings both ways.

Best I got.

Adobe Photoshop / Re: Photoshop Plugins

I haven't tried the app, but these are all legitimate complaints about a lot of free software.

In fact, usually when a company offers a product such as that, they pretty much spam you to death until you PAY for them to stop. I remember in the career of my infancy (unwisely) signing up for newsletters, software offers, etc. etc. and wishing for death. It's kind of like antivirus software that makes you pay for the virus they installed. One of my favorite technological ironies.

All of that aside how do you like the app? Furthermore, does it have the above listed 'free' headaches? The content also seems a little low. I suppose I could click and check for myself, but I am paranoid and hear that OnOne has spammed other forum participants. The last thing I want to is have to write them an angry email or find out that I've accidentally sold my soul by clicking on their link.

Any information would be helpful as I have been meaning to try Perfect Effects.

My experiences (and most of the reviews I've read), highlight 6's ability to make a lot of things easier. One of my favorite tools is the quick selection tool that allows you to select areas with similar colors. Really the only thing it is missing is the ability to create an optimized image merge.

Corel allows you to combine two images and blend them despite different exposures, highlights, shadows, etc.

Sharing on Photoshop 6 is also pretty sweet because you can invite friends to join your gallery, leave comments, etc.

I find that a lot of programs try to reinvent the wheel with new versions, but my experiences with Photoshop 6 have been pretty good. 6 is amazing for novices, except for the fact that they have to switch between Photoshop and Photoshop Elements in order to accomplish many tasks, something that could easily be done in 5 with a little practice.

Photoshop 6 is incredibly powerful and the new options are not superficial but allow a variety of complex editing and a much more (in my opinion) user friendly interface.
Great stuff for dezingers, but usually not so great for prepress techs. I've never been a fan of planned obsolesence and Adobe is a leader in that field. When one plans to introduce new version updates every year, it's no surprise that the word "rip-off" comes to mind.

Oh I would totally agree. Most software does have the problem of planned obsolescence, and yep Adobe is especially bad for that. As far as prepress techs go, CS5 would be more than sufficient for most projects. it's kind of a problem in general as far as most tech industries go.

Also mentioned above is the fact that usually it will cost more to upgrade late as opposed to right away (of course they design in that way), but if one is able to complete their prepress with an earlier version (or different application as it were), then there is not much of a point in upgrading at all.

Photoshop does cater more toward designers, which they do a good job of offering new functions for. I'm not sure 6 is absolutely necessary to upgrade for prepress, but it may be convenient if you find yourself using Photoshop often enough to justify the purchase.

Random Technology / Re: Tablets

Not only is Google naming their OS after delicious things, they are doing it in alphabetical order. As to why they are doing this, they won't say why. In fact, who knows why Google does ANYTHING. Also why did they skip the first two letters of the alphabet? Or are their Apple-Fritter and Banana-Split operating systems lost in the shuffle?

The OS is pretty good though, that is if you plan on your Android pulling ALL of its information from your Google accounts. Pretty soon you probably won't even be able to make a phone call without having Google PhonCallONomics installed.

Yes they do upgrade fairly easily except for third party programs like Angry Birds for example. And there is always the annoying aspect of an android not being 4g. I have an EVO 4g and I'm lucky to get one g. I assume connectivity and integration is much better with tablets, though, which I have yet to purchase.

I hear a lot less people complaining about their iPad, but by going apple you miss out on getting hungry every time you mention your OS.
