In the past week I haven't been able to copy certain files from the Mac to an external USB drive. A few days ago it refused to copy a folder of JPGs and today it's refusing one PDF but not another. Error pops up, see screenshot. It's a 40Gb drive with 4Gb available.

Any ideas? I'm clueless, as usual.

So,  :drunk3: i send the job to the rip with live transparecy (v 1.7 or whatever) and it craps out with a memory error.

they're either corrupted files or maybe they're locked.
Have you done the"get info" on the troubled files to see if you have permissions?

Nope. The troublesome PDF I mentioned above was created by me 5 minutes before I started this thread. Not locked, read/write.

Sounds like it is a bad spot on the hard drive. Prepare for disaster.

Excellent! It's holding my massive graphics collection.

Should I do a wipe?

Yes..and you may want to do something with the hard drive too.

I have an external that acts up like that on occasion. I reformat it and it seems to clear it up. I use it more for transport than storage. The files always copy over to and from, but the size partition shrinks with each mount. It is weird. It has been doing this for more than 6 months and I have been preparing for disaster the whole time. Hasn't happened. Still going strong.

I reformatted this drive about 6 months ago, moved my graphics collection onto it. The error has suddenly popped up over the past week.

I'll wipe my disk and let you know what transpires.

I'm trying to backup the naughty drive right now - it got to 19.34Gb of 30 and just stopped. Prior to this I got some error about some data not able to be copied. The copy window is hanging and I can't stop it. What should I do?

You can kill the copy process with Activity Monitor in your Utilities folder. Then I would try some form of disk utility on the drive.

Hope for the best...prepare for the worst.

Maybe you should try to manually copy files. I'd kill it if it goes on too much longer. It may have come to a bad sector on the disk and it is leading up to a dialog explaining this. That takes forever on occasion.

That was the first thing I looked at...but what am I looking to kill? Nothing says "copy". Relaunch Finder?

I am. I just dragged everything from the external to my local. It got over halfway and then... :death:

well, no matter what you do, it ain't gonna be purdy.

Force quit the finder is the one thing I'd try after I let it run for a while. How long has it been sitting there? 10 min or more?
