Enfocus / He-e-elp...create 'open path'
September 26, 2016, 06:12:35 PM
In-house dezinger has created a 'box' to give us a die-cut. We only need the curved  left hand side. Need to get rid of the top/bottom/right of the 'box'

OK, can Remove Anchor point, but is there a way of 'breaking the Anchor Point joins, top/left + bottom/left? So then I can delete unwanted?

General Prepress / Latest iMacs
September 25, 2016, 05:32:46 AM
We crawl closer to Phase 1 of long overdue upgrades.

mac reseller says that Pro towers are 3 yr old tech. New iMacs are more recent, have better displays, run cooler.

Ballpark on similarly spec'd, (speed/RAM/Storage wise) Towers is ~AU$ 6200.

-iMac would be about $4100.

Add a display cost to the Tower. OK, we don't need a Pro for what we do.

Anyone experienced a recent model iMac? As described above? Apparently the display res has gone higher.

General Prepress / Suprasetters_where made?
September 18, 2016, 11:15:48 PM
Having to 'look' at Suprasetters, though it's a comparison exercise it seems, more than anything. My instinct is Screen PlateRite 4600/S.
My question... wondering if anyone knows if Suprasetters are made in Germany or whether they've been off-shored somewhere.

The PlateRites are made in Kyoto.

...sorta like Reagan's neutron bomb, right? Kill all the humans; leave the buildings intact. What a lovely guy..

But sorta like that. I picked this up before I need to plate, but am glad I did.

A school Yearbook text set. All peachy except that the pics are in CMYK 'mono', and need to be Grayscale. All text, headers etc are in Black, or tints of Black. Text is 100K in the virgin file, but is Outlined...

So, pics are sole problem..but, I ran EAL 'To Grayscale, keep black text'.. before I'd realised that text had been outlined. (Yes, I should have looked.. ::)  )

Can someone confirm that there is no EAL beast that will convert all my images, but leave everything else intact, like the Neutron Bomb?

It's only about 72 pp, so a manual conversion page by page is not too terrible,; I'll have time to do it, but cannot see such an EAL.

Output Preview is measuring Outlined type. You can see the 4 col pic...

General Prepress / PAT filter changes
July 25, 2016, 05:58:53 PM
Anyone using one of these. Ours is a 506id.

Question is: I have the I & II buttons showing yellow. Pretty sure this means I need a 6 month and a 3 month. Awaiting tech to call me for guidance, but thought I'd throw it out here. We only run ours about 8 hrs a day, so it's a long time between changes.

Adobe InDesign / OSX & Indy CC update
July 21, 2016, 07:21:20 PM
Our situation here is parlous, IMO, but no-one aside fr 'Emma Peel' here with me seems to understand that. We don't dig into Indy too much, particularly for incoming customer files; near 100% PDF in, unless there are 'issues'. Even then..

But, we've had to use IDMLs on a couple recently, and I've not done a check to see whether/how far, we're behind.

My question... Is 10.6.8 OK to run the latest Indy CC?

Adobe Applications Mgr...> follow the bouncing ball, right?

Friday here, TG.   :undecided:

Those 'broken up' regions... = 'pre-flattened'? I want to stretch (cheat), the image out 1 mm to reach 3mm Bleed. I suspect it's been downsized from a larger proportional size, to the desired smaller Trim size, so it's lost Bleed, proportionally to the rest. I.e. I still need 3mm Bleed, in any size.

I've tweaked this sort of thing before in pp, but someone's done summin upstream. Off to tool with it now, but I'll Copy and flatten at HiRes in Acrobat. I may be mistaken, and it's already flattened.   :undecided:

Monday morn here... Was outputting plates. XMF output window not reflecting what's coming out.... got a full set but shows a download on Y and a waiting-in-queue on K. This occurs occasionally. OK, after restarting XMF Client, (no luck), I did the 'proper' thing in the hierarchy of resets... I.e. close:
-Client
-XMF server
-shut down Luxel.

Restarted in reverse order. Client still outa whack on that output, so nothing's been wiped/reset.

next (normal) escalation is to do a restart on the HP box. This would normally re-align all stars. But it's frozen on a grey screen, with still responsive mouse cursor, (but nothing else).

I think this has happened as it's tried to shut down, not on any restart.

Awaiting call-back from Fujifilm guy fr interstate, (Sydney guy's off sick).

Thought I'd fly the kite here while I'm waiting... shitty time difference though...

:hello:

... my guess is a hot-button off, but am loathe to do it until I talk to a Fujifilm guy.

Adobe Acrobat / Font Error message
April 03, 2016, 09:41:25 PM
112 pages of school Yearbook. Would I be wise to get a resend (1.5 hrs + download, or run the gauntlet and let 'em check?

I guess if XMF renders it OK, it may be a furphy. Thoughts? It's not an unembed message; rather a cannot extract message. ...

Acrobat XI here.

....googing that Optima.. looking like a 'cheapie'. No idea what the other half is about. This is not a 'cheapie' publication, and it's a dezinger house doing it under contract. .  Not happy, Jan!

Also, should they not get that error message/warning when they open it after Export?

Adobe InDesign / Limits to Indy updates.
March 29, 2016, 09:21:28 PM
We're both on 10.6.8 here in pp. We had to open an outside/incoming Indy doc. (actually pretty rare here these days).
Couldn't open it. So we updated via Adobe Applications Manager; took us to 9.3. But that still didn't suffice.
Checked with dezingers at head office, who are on CC like us, supposedly same license, and they're on 11.0.1.105 now.

Would Adobe be self-limiting in its update level, after reading OSX info?    :wildstab:

Did a repeat job which already has Creep Value pre-loaded in it. We routinely go in and select first 2 + last 2 pages on our saddle stitch jobs, --> Remove Creep.
For the rest of the pages in the job we'll set "Creep Face Only'. All good.

But if you have to replace one of the Sheets, (usually with another Stripping Sheet Template), you gotta have the 'Use Default Creep' button ticked/checked on the Sheets pane. If you don't, things can go whacky. TG I thought I'd check the plate grip... 56.14mm.

Once I'd checked that button, it reverted to (wanted) 53mm plate grip. Was a hair-tearer, and I've got less and less of it.

Sharin' & Carin'

Update: I suspect that before I checked that pane, after I'd brought it in, it had a scatter effect through the job, greatly reducing the required Creep amount. I'll test properly later, but what alerted me was that XMF wanted me to re-render the whole job; usually a sign something is awry, but you've just not sussed it yet. It's like 'contaminating' the job, cos it can't accommodate a Sheet without Creep checked.
I've gone with the already-output plates for the text, and tip-toeing around with my fingers crossed.   :undecided:

On OSX 10.8.5. Firefox 43.0.4
When I pick a page in Goog search, the page appears for a few seconds, and is then replaced by a Yahoo! 'error handling' results page.

https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/errorhandler?hspart=gt&hsimp=yhse-gt&q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pineapplecider.com.au%2F*&type=769480\\It's like another crappy search results page, looking about 10 years old, like everything Yahoo! (..20 years?)

I've been into Firefox Prefs and removed any reference to Yahoo! Restarted. Still does it. I could use Chrome (I use Safari a bit for my webmail, mostly.. another story), but have been happy with FF.

Clues? Next steps?

Am using CyberGhost, FWIW. My IP was in OZ, but another city. Shouldn't affect it, but in interests of disclosure/troubleshooting.

... oh, nearly forgot... g'night!

And all you USA/NE people, hope you're coping OK.

Bahahaha... daughters colleaugue, who was meant to be going to NYC anyway, is 'grounded' in LA.
Left his rat run a bit late...
Long story, and wouldn't tell it here, but she's amused.

Adobe Acrobat / Convert to Spot_goes 100% to ~90%
December 14, 2015, 04:07:24 AM
Head office dezinger does wrapping paper and a season greeting card.
It's an image, which i presume he's done in PhSh. In his wisdom has given me a 4 col version, and P 02 is as Black background version of same job (effectively mono)..
At home, so no screenshots available.
I need to print as 485C. (single colour job).
In my supreme dumbness I converted it to 485C in Pitty, and got a solid background. I should have tried to run the mono version in cmyk route in XMF, so they could run 485C with it. I'll try in the morn...
It has screened elements in the job, but in WireFrame it's a single image, so i guess he's Placed a TIFF or summin in Indy, then Exported the PDF.

OK, when it goes through XMF, I'm getting the solid go to ~92% ish. This needs to print 100%, or close to it, (so they can 'fill it in').

This is just the plate curve being applied to the image, correct?

Is my only way to get that to solid background, but not tamper too much with the mids and highs to do curve manipulation of Shadow area in either PitStop or via PhSh/save back in?

Hope this makes some sense. Screen shots in AM as necessary, (I think you may still be up/at work, Joe  :smiley:  )

Macintosh / iGetter_Chrome_Hightail
December 01, 2015, 10:02:12 PM
I put this in 'Other OSs'    :embarrassed:

Here, where it maybe should be...

Our head office regularly sends us links via HighTail. We follow the bouncing ball, and they start downloading after a folder is chosen.
Suddenly, out of the blue, it's tripping on iGetter, (i.e. it won't download unless I use iGetter. But iGetter's not a freebie, right?
Something 'crept in' here, that I'm not aware of?

....but I ended up in a useless loop; couldn't download it, but blocked by dumb message.

Macintosh / Mac Mail Sigs
November 09, 2015, 10:11:00 PM
Work is going a bit 'corporate', (long/boring story), and our Mail Sigs are a bit outa whack; mine particularly as I got quite creative with it.

OK have been given a .docx of it, and been told I just need to drop it into the Mail prefs Sig window. Although my previous one was working fine ( I had a PDF in that case), I've been told that the .docx 'should work fine'.

No matter how I drag/drop/activate/delete/re-try, I get a freezed up Mail, or nothing showing me the dropdown select in the new message window.

Clues if someone has any. Should it work? Am I doing something wrong?

I can (and did) Export a PDF of the .docx outa LibreOffice, then tightened the Media Box, but that's a side issue. Something more basic (not) happening here.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Choose Signature" in Prefs is now greyed out. Greyt! Even though there's a docx in there ready to go.
After some tooling, it seems only a PDF is working as required. Would appreciate some confirmation on this. Anyone else using a docx in their Mail Sig Prefs that actually works?
.... when I choose the docx Sig, I get a docx icon and subscript & filename.
When I choose the PDF version, I get a graphic (PDF well duh) of the desired Sig.    :shrug:
.... in a New Message window, that is.
Enfocus / Masking to adjust Foil file
November 08, 2015, 07:50:44 PM
Dezinger has supplied a Process+Spot file, as I advised her, but she wants a 'corner' to not be part of the Foil. I only need one 'fixed' one for XMF, even though each bus card has the Foil-as-Spot in place.
The corner is formed from a peep-over as part of a circle (Compound Path, AFAICT), so the only way I can see of achieving this is to pen a white mask-out, which I've done with PitStop path Tool.(nil stroke, 0/0/0/0 Fill.) Not pretty, but it should work.
There's no magic unlocking of that vector setup, whereby bits of the non-contiguous elements can be deleted, is there?
Baby out with bathwater....
Technical / VideoPad Editor (Mac)
October 30, 2015, 05:32:09 AM
I needed a dumb/simple clip-out to remove some (very) annoying footage. QuickTime was not even starting to Export the clipped file.
I downloaded this
For anyone with simple needs, like mine.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Video link is on next window (strangely, link disappeared when I posted....), with beginning of clipped footage. Still feeling my way with the settings in conversions. I've dropped quality; unsurprising.

It's suffered a bit in the clipping (Operator error, but anyhoo...

Enfocus / Font drop-off
October 07, 2015, 07:51:13 PM
Customer asks for a fix our end. They want 2 photo credits in; small point size, in italics. Piece o' piss. Well, so I thought...

I duly do an edit in PitStop, but neglect to embed, (which I should have, but it didn't help anyway).

So, I send her the PDF (it's a folder, so small file size). Thing is, both CSR and customer do not have that type showing up.

I go back and Embed, with a GC, which I think should fix it. It rendered fine from the start, and showed as White KO; all good.

When I view that file on my iMac, it's fine. Turning O'print preview on/off makes no diff.

Is this a Mac/PC~email problem? Is my change being stripped from the email'd PDF, despite my subsequent embedding? Will Donald Trump become President of the USA?

Hoping for some answers, as it's driving me nuts.

The solution, of course, was to send a rendered file as proof, ex-Black Magic Export.

Adobe InDesign / .plist refresher... please
August 04, 2015, 07:56:03 PM
Work compadra has an ancient iMac and ancient Adobe at home. Her keyboard shortcuts have gone flaky.

She's gotta drag her .plist file(s) onto Desktop and re-launch, correct?

Been a while... Is it system Library or User~Library?  Path?
