Kodak Preps / Re: Preps 7 Form naming
February 12, 2016, 09:56:26 PM
We're mixing the variable marks unintentionally and seems ok so far.

Farabomb...isn't a 2 day, 7 hour per day, conference phone call with trainer and 2 other companies, with hourly breaks and lunch considered training? Oh yeah, and the Preps training was a week before Prinergy was upgraded, so all in stand-alone demo mode. But I'm sure it was the same for everyone with the upgrade. Hence, the silly questions I've been asking.

That's the conclusion we are coming up with. Wish THAT was explained in the "thorough" training provided by Kodak...they just seemed to selling the folding patterns, which we are still trying to work for us as a custom printer, periodically, with multiple folding patterns on the same press sheet.

Running with Prinergy 7. Discovered that it just needed the brackets for entire different result. $[sig] will give the actual form number from Prinergy's Signature window instead of the bindery sig. Have the manual, thanks. Found the "Text-mark variables" section somewhat vague. Thanks, again!

Kodak Preps / Preps 7 Form naming
February 09, 2016, 11:02:42 PM
I've seen a thread about form naming with Preps 7, but can't find it now. Can someone point me in the right direction? We currently use $sig, which works well when sections run in order, but our Wizard Planners love to mix things up, so I'm trying to find a naming convention that will use the form/sheet number instead of the section number.

Kodak Preps / Preps 7 Text Marks
January 19, 2016, 08:06:13 PM
We recently upgraded from Preps 5.1 to Preps 7. Among our the glitches yet be resolved is an issue with a text mark, which now is a smartmark for our job names. In Preps 5.1 $jobname would retrieve the name from the Prinergy job name. In Preps 7, it now retrieves the name from the imposition name. BUT, it also add .old to the job name. Does anyone know how to resolve .old being added? Our current work-around is to replace the $jobname in the slug manually, which should not be necessary. Any advice would be appreciated.

Adobe InDesign / Corrupt fonts in CC
March 06, 2014, 04:52:11 PM
Wondering if anyone else has been having this issue: Running CC with iMac. When I export a PDF, then open the PDF in Acrobat I get a message saying "ECWJCS+Helvetica" font is corrupt and cannot be extracted. Prinergy Connect also will not refine due to the same corrupt/missing font. This font is not used in the document. It happens with different CC documents at different times. If I quite CC, restart and export the PDF again it's OK. But is beginning to be a hassle...can't say I'm too fond of CC...

Creates layout on the fly? How are independent pages handled? No pretty pictures to look at?

Try resaving the .eps files with the preview format set to tiff (8-bit color) and check options to Include Document Thumbnails. Either one of these options not included can cause preview malfunnnnctions.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth dude! I'd LOVE to see a machine with 16 gigs ram!!!! CS3 needs 2 gigs ram to run - how much ram for CS4? Don't have CS4 yet, but we already have a client who does, so we'll need to get it soon. It seemed like it was overnight when everyone started to submit CS3 files, and was difficult to upgrade all of the machines to catch up - and here we are again with CS4.

I think newspapers will be around for quite awhile. There are still large populations of people without computers and internet access, let alone the long tradition of the handy newspaper. I remember my brother telling me 20 years ago that newpapers will be dead and buried 10 years ago.

Kodak Preps / Re: learning preps

Don't let Preps overwhelm you. Remember, it's just another of those prepress applications that seem more impressive than it actually is. When I first experienced Preps a few years back, I was thrown to the wolves!! Had an operator that thought because he knew something, that nobody else needed any background info, let alone any training. Once you have the templates and marks organized and your file paths set correctly in the preferences, the majority of Preps is logical and mathematical. There are A LOT of bells and whistles and some awesome tools, but the basics will get you what you need in most cases. I spent a lot of time poking around with it and found a lot of shortcuts and tricks that the other operator didn't seem to know about at that time. There are still things I don't know, and learn things about it all the time.
