Kodak Systems / Kodak has lost their minds...

If you go to a product upgrade page and there are red text warnings everywhere would you be inclined to perform the upgrade?

Also how bat shit crazy is it to have fixes for an older version that isn't in the latest and greatest?

General Prepress / 5k Retina iMac
February 28, 2017, 01:24:33 PM
Sooooooo....did you know your iMac isn't actually running at 5K out of the box? The default resolution is 2560 x 1440. If you want to run it at the 5k resolution open your System Preferences > Display. Hold down the 'Option' key on your keyboard and then click the 'Scaled' radio button. So will now actually see the actual resolutions you can run. Click on the 5120 x 2880. Hold on to your hat and grab a pair of binoculars. You will need them to see anything. :rotf:

We have ran into an issue display or Kodak Insite pages in Preview which is a little app within Insite. The pages are really blurry at the 5k Retina display default resolution of 2560 x 1440. But if you switch to 5120 x 2880 they are crystal clear. However I do not know how anyone would ever be able to work at that resolution. This is what the screen looks like at 5120 x 2880.

Here is a screen grab of my whole screen. It is only linked instead of displayed here because the crazy screen shot is 20.5 MB!

General Prepress / Up and/or Out
January 26, 2017, 10:04:06 AM
It seems my interpretation of these terms differ from other I work with. They contend that they both mean the same thing. My contention is that '2 up' means the same (page or signature) twice and that '2 out' means a different (page or signature).

For example on a sheetfed press, to me, '4 up 1 out' means the same page on the sheet 4 times (4 up) and the final product is 1 page (1 out). And '1 up 4 out' means each page is on the sheet once (1 up) and there are 4 separate pages (4 out).

On a web press '2 up 12 out' would mean the press delivers two 12 page signatures (12 out) and both contain the same pages (2 up).

Feel free to enlighten me as to how wrong I am but that is the way I was taught 37 years ago.

Adobe InDesign / OK...VD (not the STD variety)
November 11, 2016, 12:41:58 PM
I've managed to keep my mitts out of variable date for quite some time but today it has arrived.

We have an Excel file with about 5000 names, address, etc...

We have a PDF, also the INDD native files, for a one page letter with a 4 color photo.

At the head of the letter they want to insert those names addresses and print out the 5,000 + copies with the names and addresses.

Can anyone give me a quick run down of how we do this to our color copier. It has Command Workstation but we don't have any kind of variable data software. Can it be done from InDesign.

Below are the screen grabs of the Excel file and the letter where the info goes. One caveat...you can see in the screen grab of the letter. Some need to use the <title> <first_name> <last_name> while others need to use the <Business/organization Name>. In the excel file either the <title> <first_name> <last_name> has data and the <Business/organization Name> is blank or just the opposite.. Would that need to broken down into two separate data files? Or how?

Kodak Systems / Smart Hot Folders in Prinergy
September 23, 2016, 10:30:18 AM
Hello,

Having an issue with smart hot folders which I think has been setup correctly. The input file pattern is:

[$Customer]_[$]_[#Date:6]_[$]_[$]_[#Page:3]_[$]_[$]_[$].[$Ext]

and the Output Job name pattern is:

[$Customer]_[#Date]

The input PDF is named:

LDN_NEWS_091616_01_A_022_00_01_NW.PDF

When the file is copied into the smart hot folder it moves it into the 'Processed' folder but not into any of the other 3 folders named 'Incoming, Rejected, or Temp' and it never creates the new job. It should create the new job off of a template job named LadueNewsPT that is in the Pre-Jobs ==> Insite ==> RULES group in Workshop. In that template job there is a hot folder setup to process the incoming files but seeing as how it never creates the job of course no files get processed.

I have tried deleting the smart hot folder a couple of times and recreating it fresh but it still never creates the job.

Any clues from any Prinergy users?

Adobe Acrobat / Acrobat DC May 10 2016
May 12, 2016, 11:26:16 AM
If you are using Acrobat DC I would recommend not doing the latest update released on May 10 2016. After doing the update if I change any color value with Pitstop it changes the display to a monochrome image. The only way to view 4 color again is to close the PDF and re-open it. Major PITA! >:(

Kodak Systems / Web 2 Print
March 17, 2016, 03:55:16 PM
I know Kodak either has or had a storefront that was part of Insite. I think it was called 'KODAK INSITE Storefront 6.0" but I can't find out if it is still out there or not. It isn't listed as part of Insite over on Kodak's website. What I did find on the Kodak site is info for EFI Digital StoreFront and it says Kodak is an authorized reseller of EFI Digital StoreFront, eCommerce Web to Print Software. Does that mean Kodak no longer has their Insite Storefront and they are selling this instead?

And if anyone is doing any digital storefronts for business cards and stuff like that what web 2 print software are you using for it?

Random Technology / Joe's Audio Video
October 26, 2015, 03:55:00 PM
No, not me. But this one:

Joe's Audio Video
1125 W Blancke Street
Rahway, NJ 07036

http://www.joesav.com

Anyone in that area....or anyone else if they have dealt with them before. They have ridiculously low-priced TV's. For example:

Samsung UN75J6300 75" Class Full HD 1080p Smart LED TV
75" screen size
LED technology
1080p resolution
120 clear motion rate
Smart TV internet platform (WiFi built in)

In stock
Price: $1,549.00

Or a 4K Ultra HD like this one:

Samsung 65" LED Smart TV - 4K UHDTV (2160p) - UN65JU6500
65" screen size
LED technology
4K Ultra HD resolution
120 clear motion rate
Smart TV internet platform (WiFi built in)

In stock
Price: $1,389.00

I'm leery of buying online from them as in most cases "if it sounds too good to be true it probably is". But if anyone has ever dealt with them and didn't get ripped off in the process I would be interested.

Kodak Systems / Prinergy 7 / Insite 7...FREE at last
October 14, 2015, 09:19:43 AM
No not the price but it is Java free. Just upgraded to new servers yesterday using Prinergy 7 and Insite 7. Love the changes to Smart Review. Instead of multiple windows floating around they combined them into a nice little sidebar that you can expand/contract with no screen clutter. Plus no Java in either Smart Review or with uploading. Still have to have Flash for Preview though. Baby steps.

Haven't had time yet to explore the new Callas Preflight yet but everything else in Prinergy seems about the same.

Adobe Acrobat / Acrobat DC update today...
October 14, 2015, 07:20:21 AM
I see they gave us a preference today to not show the Home screen when closing all documents. It works if you close a document via COMMAND+W or using the File menu ==> Close but if you just click the little "X" on the tab the Home screen is still there. A vast improvement anyway. YAY Adobe!

Still no ability to select multiple objects with SHIFT+CLICK if Output Preview is open. BOO Adobe!

Random Technology / Security Firewall device
September 09, 2015, 10:42:58 PM
Looks like we have issues with our Firewall (Netgear FVS336G) where it keeps losing internet connectivity. Any recommendations on affordable and secure devices? I'm kind of wanting to steer clear of Netgear these days.
