Kodak Preps / Shingle PDF to PDF
October 06, 2011, 11:41:55 AM
Have a 11 x 8.5 - 28 page PDF that I'm imposing on 12 x 18.

I need to shingle it by .0625 and Preps 5 is moving the sheet on the 11" (side to side) and not the 8.5" way that it should be moving it.

I'm not rotating the pages and the template is correct, so what's going on?

I don't normally shingle PDF to PDF jobs. Anyone using PDF to PDF and shingling?

Adobe InDesign / Align Paragraph Text to Center Vertically
September 27, 2011, 11:57:49 AM
This is what I need...

I need a way to have variable text centered on a fixed point.

Let's say I have a circle and I have variable text that is going to fill the circle. All I can get is the text to start from the top, left point and center horizontally. I want the text to center on the exact center of the circle and be horizontally and vertically centered. Remember, the length of the text that will fill the circle varies.

Any ideas?

CTP - CTF / LD threshold for calibration
August 16, 2011, 11:40:12 AM
Have a PTR 8600 & Fuji 9000, when calibrating the LDs I get a message that some cannot be calibrated. I run a measure and they might read from 98% to 101%.

I understand that there are 32 lasers that run on 2 banks of 16 and when an LD is too low the device changes to expose a plate with only 1 bank of LDs, thus slowing the device essentially to half speed.

My question is how low of a % can the LDs be and still be called good? What LD % does the device have to reach before it steps down to just 1 bank of lasers?

RAMpage / Trap Tab Settings
July 18, 2011, 01:19:54 PM
Trying to rebuild default settings and noticed that the trap tab in the single page rip is different in many default queues.

We normally have only Ignore White Overprint checked. We noticed a set of queues with Enhanced Overprint and Ignore Quark Overprint checked also.

Rampage said to start with Enhanced Overprint and Ignore Quark Overprint Settings.

Want to share your settings?

My RIP cannot process the unflattened PDF without a 'ghost' box around the transparent logos that are placed on images, so I am trying to Save As EPS from Acrobat 9.4.5.
The CMYK is converting to RGB. I have removed ICC tags, re-fried the PDF, and even used my lucky charm but cannot keep the CMYK colors.
Now I realize I have only been in pre-press for a bazillion years and have performed this a gazillion times but I can't figure this one out.
Have I finally lost my mind? What am I missing?  :old:

RAMpage / Rampage Normalize and Fonts
June 29, 2011, 12:50:33 PM
I don't have 2 seconds to call Rampage so I'll try here first.

PDF with fonts not embedded using Times New Roman. Rampage is swapping out Times for other fonts. Prescan indicates Times but no way Jose.

Clues?

I have a layered PSD placed in INDD and the PSD has type that was set from within PhotoShop over a layer with an image. The old "Silo'ed head is on top of the Title" trick. The result is exported as a PDF from INDD.

Will your RIP trap the Type to the image? If so, what RIP are you using?

Assume that the PSD is 300 dpi and is placed @100% in INDD, what trap amount and base units would you use for the Trap from within PhotoShop? I would assume that the DPI of the PSD would affect this, agreed?

Digital Printing / XMPie question
March 07, 2011, 01:29:04 PM
I have a new install of XMPie v5 on a new iMac running CS5.

When I dynamic print I get a PS file but XMPie errors on the creation of the PDF. I can distill the PS file without error.

The error I get is:
Failed in producing PDF. (duh)
EPS sidelining is off
File-per-page is off
Image sidelining is off
Write PDF via callbacks is on
CantHappen called - error id = 654311427

Any ideas?

Enfocus / PitStop cropping and viewing pages
February 18, 2011, 08:35:42 AM
Currently using PitStop 8, when cropping a multi-page document is there anyway to click through the pages?

I am sending multi-page PDF proofs made from Rampage and am cropping the document to trim size. It would be nice to be able to click through the document one last time to check for bleeds. Are you able to do this in more current versions of PitStop?

Can I do it now but I don't know how?

Pressroom / Crossovers and Curves
February 14, 2011, 07:40:46 AM
We run various curves depending on the press and the stock for 4/C and when printing B/W jobs we run linear plates.

So what to do when we have a BW halftone that crosses over on a 4/C form and a B/W form? We run all the plates as linear.

I haven't been too keen on this for quite a while but what do you suggest?

Digital Printing / When showing digital proofs ...
January 28, 2011, 09:10:57 AM
do you put verbiage anywhere on your proof approval sheet regarding color drift or holding color over long runs?

I think that certain customers have too great of an expectation of holding a color over a long run, or when the job is reprinted and the color doesn't match exactly.

I'm thinking of putting that into the proof and having the customer sign off on it.

Have a 9800 and am getting small areas of image dropping out and thin hairlines in the direction of paper travel but only in the right 10" of image area on a 44" roll.

It appeared to have a pattern indicating that the paper was responsible so we changed rolls and lot numbers. Still no luck.

Have done print head alignment, power clean, cleaned rubber wiper, roll end core sleeves, etc. Still no luck.

It is unusual in that it only occurs on the right side (as you face the proofer), and no further in than 10". It occurs anywhere within that 10".

Adobe InDesign / Data Merge & Images
December 09, 2010, 09:57:48 AM
I'm trying to swap out images based on data from a csv file.

On the Indy website it says to format like this - "(Mac OS) Example of image references in data source file", "Mac HD:Photos:BillTucker.jpg"

I am working from a server and I have this - ":Volumes:JobDisk:JobFolder:00500_SX_Testing_mac:##Layout:INDD_DataMerge_Test:Images:Engineering.jpg".

After linking the image to the doc Indy cannot reference the missing image. I am betting that the since the server isn't referenced before the ":Volumes" in the full image path, it cannot find the image. I am also betting that images cannot be located on a server but have to be local.

Other thoughts?

Enfocus / reverse page order
November 15, 2010, 09:56:29 AM
I need an action to reverse the page order of PDFs. Anyone have any clues?

Long story: I need a PitStop ninja, I have multiple sections of magazines that the client now wants to impose as a come-and-go. I need to reverse the page orders of selected sections so I can combine them into single PDFs in the proper page order.

RAMpage / Ganging Feature
October 04, 2010, 01:03:34 PM
Using Rampage 10.6 (still  :sarcasm:)

Need to figure out this Ganging feature. I can't tell if this requires Gateway or not. We don't use it and it isn't installed, maybe that's why it won't work?

Kodak Preps / What box does Preps use
August 25, 2010, 11:25:53 AM
When imposing PDF to PDF, what box does Preps use? Media, bleed, trim, crop, or art?

Can it be changed in the Prefs file?

I just had a job go through where I don't know where Preps got the page size from. Totally FUBAR, man.

Digital Printing / Numbering
August 06, 2010, 09:38:13 AM
I'm in the deep end now and I need some help.

I have a 2 part NCR job coming in fast. I need to print 5000 of these Invoices with numbering from 00001 to 05000.

All I can think of is to make a .CSV with 5000 numbers and print it. I made a.CSV file in Excel with the numbers 00001, 00001, 00002, 00002, and so on- it's 2 part NCR remember?. I made it Data Merge in INDD.  Now when I run the Data Merge it sits forever and ever because it is making a 10,000 page PDF!

This is crazy, am I wrong?
