Kodak Preps / Page limit to Preps?
June 04, 2010, 10:31:22 AM
I'm trying to impose a monster in Preps. It won't add all of my 792 pages.

Is there a limit?

Adobe InDesign / 6.0.5 update
May 11, 2010, 03:32:00 PM
From Adobe:

Adobe InDesign CS4 6.0.5 update

This update fixes an issue in how Adobe InDesign CS4 software calculates the bounding boxes of placed AI/PDF files. The behavior is now consistent with that of InDesign CS3. Users with existing InDesign CS4 files may notice a repositioning of placed AI/PDF files when updating their links.

Does anyone have any experience with this "repositioning" that they would like to share?

Kodak Preps / PDF to PDF Imposition
February 19, 2010, 10:14:54 AM
I'm hoping someone has come across this before and can answer it. I don't have time now to test it.

I am going to start PDF to PDF imposition of jobs in Preps for digital printing. If I impose a PDF-X Certified file and output a PDF from Preps do you think there will be issues?

I know I could impose in INDD and just export a PDF-X but we aren't going down that road.

Thoughts?

Adobe Acrobat / ICC Profile in PDF
December 04, 2009, 09:55:58 PM
I have a PDF, 1.4, PDF Producer Adobe Photoshop for Macintosh -- Image Conversion Plug-in, with ICC Profile: U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2.

It is placed in PM7 on WinXP, but the PDF has transparency so PMD can't get it right. I EPS the PDF and place the EPS. Now the color goes whack. When it is EPS'ed the ICC profile is saved. WTF?
I didn't ask for the ICC profile to be saved, I asked for no color management. Tried saving as EPS on Mac & Win, both save the ICC. If I distill the EPS, the PDF still has the ICC profile.

Now I eliminated the ICC with PitStop but WTF? Any clues?

Kodak Preps / Page won't bleed, Marks are gray
October 15, 2009, 07:54:46 PM
Job is a simple cover stepped over for two up on a sheet, easy right? Yea, I do a thousand of 'em a year.
This time though Preps would not bleed the bottom of one of the covers. Check bleeds, check template, checked pages, checked everything - the template is correct, the job is correct. Damn page will not bleed at bottom of only one cover!
Modified template - still fubar.
Made a new template - still fubar.
I had to place an independent page for the one that didn't bleed.

Not only that but my marks are now all gray boxes for some crazy reason. They RIP fine but viewed in Preps as gray boxes.

I'm gonna have to discuss this with either Jack, Jim or Johnnie.

General Prepress / PDF vs EPS
October 01, 2009, 05:32:52 PM
Color me confused but I thought creating an EPS or PS file flattened the transparency. I have a colleague who is adamant about EPS' & Postscript files saved as level 3 are not being flattened.
Can I save/export a PS level 3 EPS with transparency?
My brain is fried at the moment and I don't have time to test this out - what is your opinion?

IMPORTANT UPDATE:
Quark recently discovered a serious issue when using PostScript Type 1 fonts with QuarkXPress, QuarkXPress Server and QuarkCopyDesk running under Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard:
Text using a Type 1 font can shift position when opened on Mac OS X Snow Leopard, affecting the leading and vertical position of the text, as well as any drop shadows applied to the text. Quark is therefore recommending that customers who rely on Type 1 fonts not use QuarkXPress with Snow Leopard until this issue is resolved. Customers who don't use Type 1 fonts are not affected. This issue is specific to Mac OS X Snow Leopard only and does not impact other operating systems. Quark is working with Apple on a resolution. Please watch the Quark Web site for updates as we have them.

Adobe InDesign / Placing Multi Page PDF
July 29, 2009, 03:20:57 PM
I remember seeing something like this on a Forum somewhere but I cannot find it.

I need the script for placing multiple page PDFs that flows the PDF out, instead of clicking each page into position.

Anyone care to share?

RAMpage / Exporting and Archiving RIPped Data
June 24, 2009, 08:31:38 PM
Who is using PATHway?

We are looking into exporting RIPped data for archiving. We seem to be re-printing a lot more jobs. I don't know if clients are storing less inventory or what. Anyway, are you using PATHway, and how do you like the Importing/Exporting ability.

Any issues?

General Prepress / Minimum DPI
May 07, 2009, 01:31:18 PM
In our workflow we can preflight files before RIPping.

My question is, what is the minimum DPI setting you use before a warning is given?

Do you warn and continue, or do you stop the job if you have links/images below the DPI threshold?

How do you note this to the client, before proofing or continue and note on the proof?
