Processless Fuji plates.
Pressroom says "80% of plates are scratched"
Plant president and I audited a dozen freshly imaged plates that had not yet gone to pressroom and found basically 1 scratch.
Anyway, I am sick of it and looking for new ideas, is it the machine?
Could be, but it just got all the love from a Kodak tech last week, not to mention there's so few touches! No turner or processor!
Is it rough handling?
Seems like it but unlikely. Our staff is all aged and used to proper handling back to film days.
Plates are jacketed with slip sheets, taped at the corner in 4s more or less.
The jacket is corrugated, thick, can stand vertically.

So our plant may be odd for the fact that our prepress is upstairs and the pressroom is downstairs.
We have simply carried plated jobs down for years. Our largest plate size is 40".
However, our platemakers as well as most of the prepress staff is getting old and / or infirm and finding a better and safer way is needed.
We pursued a dumbwaiter scenario and basically state law won't allow that.
An elevator is cost prohibitive.
We were going to get a dedicated used stand-up forklift that would just lift up / down things (we do have a bay door that is at the edge of prep and middle of pressroom) but that spending was un-approved.

Does anyone else have this situation? A solution? We're talking about engineering some sort of strap system to wrap around a couple of jobs with a handle... kinda klugy...

Just lucky I guess, we got our first job using a Creative Cloud font family.
Long story short, the CSR used the artist's credentials to sync the font for us...
This worked but caused a delay of a few hours. Going forward, what else / better can we do?
We have CC licenses for Adobe products but I'm unaware of the font deal being part of it...
In other words, what y'all doing?

I am basically familiar with WEB but have never shoveled for them as we're all offset sheetfed.
We have a good customer who also has web printing done and are told their images are beyond max density.
Not surprising since they don't compensate them for web. They asked us what we think and we were thinking the web plant prepress could easily have a curve in the render or rip that would cut the max den back but the printer apparently said no (?)
I was wondering if anyone knows a decent solution, such as a profile they've used, where the client could select it while exporting their pdf?
The client doesn't want to cut back and manage 2 versions of their images and I don't blame them.
I hoping not to have to do too much testing so a couple of recommendations would help a lot.

Hi all, our pressroom is complaining about the Metallic ink we get from <ink vendor>  that actually comes from a vendor of theirs.
The issue is that the rollers buildup crazy fast, like stop and wash every 500 sheets!
Also affects laminate, UV, etc...
So far we are not getting much in the way of helpful responses so I thought I would reach out and see if anyone else is fighting the same thing?

I've done my homework and it appears that I need to go incremental for this upgrade and I've started downloading all of the 1.8GB .ppu files
What I want to confirm is that I need to do all of the steps like Kodak says (7 of them FFS!) not including pre checks

We are using "Archive" with an AIT jukebox to archive client work and for the Prinergy backup...

I'm hearing there's a definite issue coming though, we run 4.0x on servers running Windows 2003 and run the AIT jukebox (Archive) using RSM (Removable Storage Management) in Windows

Well, Kodak is saying Windows 2008 will not have/support RSM!!!
I think if you run Prinergy 5 or higher, you need Win2008.

So, now I'm hearing about different work-arounds, like "Archive to file" which I am not familiar with. Also note, even if you find a new solution for archiving, once you give up your Win2003 you CAN NOT get anything off your tapes any longer.
For me, that would mean 38 AIT tapes full of jobs and counting.

Any answers, questions, other issues welcomed. I want to plan a good solution and I think I have some time.

I'm noticing this on a few jobs the last few weeks:

We prep clients native files in InDD CS4 and export Press PDF (slightly modified PDF1.7) same as we did for CS3 without issue,
the result is a PDF with font/fonts viewing garbled (weird boxes and the like)

View in Acrobat7,8,9 = bad
View in Prinergy = bad
View from InSite = bad

However, all RIPs are OK:
All proofing devices = OK
Platers = OK
VirtualProofs from Prinergy = OK

I've been looking into it and coming up empty so far, anyone else having these issues or have any ideas what may be going on?

We usually use just afp but the length of some client's file names cause us to need to shorten the names then re-link them. On some larger jobs, this can literally take hours.

Using smb it seems we can avoid that issue all together, but we remember (vaguely) from startup assistance that we "shouldn't use smb because of some reason"

Unless there's a concrete reason not to use smb, we are considering retraining everyone to use this alternative when they run into a job w/ hugenormous file names. As of now, we eat the extra time and run all the risk of miss-linking a renamed support file.

Just upgraded to 4.0.2.4 (via 4.0.2.3c) and it seems very stable / low risk FYI.

Tired of taking literally minutes to scroll through the jobs lists in Workshop?
Here's a cure:
With Workshop running, but no jobs open, go to VIEW / VISIBLE COLUMNS.
In this menu, de-select any view tabs with an asterisk (they are what Kodak refers to as "expensive" and it says at the bottom of this menu that they do not refresh automatically.)
You may select as many non-asterisked view tabs as you wish.

You need to do this for each individual user as views are user specific.

We were running 4.0.2.0.38 since install.
We avoided 4.0.2.1e due to reports of major problems with Archive.
We waited until we heard 4.0.2.2e was clean and did our upgrade:

It does fix everything that was promised, the cross-linked and / or invisible jobs are all fixed, and the few jobs that would not archive did so.

However, there's 1 problem, for reruns we used to make a COPY of an archived job, then RETRIEVE the copy and rename as new, THIS DOES NOT WORK and, get this, when I call service they answer immediately that it is a known problem! :evil:
We have an ugly work-around until it's "fixed in the new upgrade coming in a week or two"  :evil: :evil:
It sucks to do your homework and get burned anyway.
Avoid 4.0.2.1e and go to 4.0.2.2e with caution.
