I have a 55" 4k Sony TV (2015), and last month I bought a PS5. I have a Directv receiver, PS3, PS4, Wii, Wii U, XBox 360, XBox One and a Roku all connected to that TV, which has 4 HDMI inputs. I bought two (different brands so no IR crossover) HDMI switches - 1 4 port and 1 5 port. Until last Wednesday, they were all connected and working. I went on vacation for 4 days, and when I came back Sunday night, nothing worked.

I disconnected EVERYTHING and reconnected Directv and the PS5. Neither one worked. The PS5 had a black screen, and Directv kept saying, "Your TV does not support this program's content protection. Replacing the TV's HDMI cable with component cables will allow you to view the program." I unplugged the PS5 and plugged it back in, and it showed a message on screen to the effect of, "rebuilding damaged storage. PS5 will restart when completed." Then a black screen again. I connected both sevices directly to the TV (not using the switches at all) and the same messages appeared.

I factory reset Directv and I factory reset the TV and I unplugged the PS5 again. After I restarted the TV (and set up the network connection and enabled 4k) and after I restarted Directv (and set up the network connection and enabled 4k) and plugged the PS5 back in, everything worked like brand new. I reconnected the switches (PS5 on the 5 port switch, Directv on the 4 port switch) and they worked fine. They worked the rest of Sunday, all day Monday and now today, they don't work again. Same PS5 black screen. Directv still works (AFAIK). WTH?

I swapped switches (I had a new unused one that I tried too), connected direct to the TV with no switch and nothing. It's less than a month old. Any suggestions? Is it the PS5? Is it the switch? Is it my TV? I'm using 4k compliant HDMI cables on all connections. The PS4, PS3, XBox 360, XBox One, Wii U and Roku all work when connected to the switches (The Wii is on component cables).

Your TV does not support this program's content protection with DIRECTV sounds like an HDMI handshake issue. Sounds like that one is resolved. Just a restart of the receiver could have fixed it. Or it could be a failing HDMI cable if you see it more. HDMI cables can go bad.

"rebuilding damaged storage. PS5 will restart when completed." Sounds like a a hard drive issue. I have never seen a PS5 though. Does it have a hard drive for storage? If so could be a bad or corrupted hard drive.

At the point you are at now I suspect a PS5 problem. Try it on another TV.

I *think* I figured it out. The input settings on the TV offer two options: "Standard" and "Enhanced." The Enhanced is supposed to be for 4:4:4 and the like, so I turned it on (one of the switches I am using even says 4k 4:4:4 on it). I turned it off, and everything started working again, so I don't know if that means I'm only viewing 1080p or if it's 4k but with compression.

All new video game systems have internal HDs in the 500gb-1tb range except the Nintendo Switch, which, while smaller, is the only one that has a microSD slot for added storage. I haven't bought one for the PS5 yet, but I put 4tb externals on the PS4 & XBox One and 1tb externals on the PS3 and XBox 360s. The PS3 cannot install, save or run items from the external - it's for backup only. The PS4, PS5, XBox One and XBox 360 can all install, save and run from an external.

  • When [ENHANCED] is selected, we recommend using a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet, which can support bandwidth up to 18 Gbps.
  • When [ENHANCED] is selected, some devices (cable box or satellite box, Blu-ray Disc player, and DVD player) does not work properly. In this case, select [STANDARD].
  • If your TV has similar menu for high bandwidth video format, check the setting on the TV menu when you select [ENHANCED] on this receiver. For details on the setting of the TV menu, refer to the operating instructions of the TV.
  • For details about the high bandwidth video format, refer to "Supported video formats" in "About HDMI connections."
QuoteYou'll need to set the TV HDMI® Signal format to Enhanced format for your source device to recognize the 4K 120Hz capability of the TV.

Note: Make sure your device is connected to the HDMI 3 or HDMI 4 input on the TV using the supplied Certified Premium HDMI cable.

  • Select SettingsWatching TVExternal inputsHDMI signal format.
  • Select the input that the device is connected to (either HDMI 3 or HDMI 4), and then change the setting to Enhanced format.
Note: Do not choose Enhanced format (Dolby Vision).
I was using ports 1 & 2 which may have led to problems as well.

Sorry to say, the PS5 will not run from an external. I have not fully tested that theory, as I'm still using my 4TB ext on my PS4. However, you can add a secondary internal SSD, which is what I did. Works just fine. External is to backup or move a game to, so you can free up space on the internal.

Really? Why would they enable that feature for the PS4 and then take it away on the PS5? What did you add on the inside? I will definitely upgrade when I get paid tomorrow.

I believe it was all about the speed. The games on the PS5 need the speed to keep up with the graphics, especially in the beginning of the rollout of the PS5. They need to keep everyone happy with the gameplay. Maybe they will make a patch to be done with a warning that gameplay may be diminished.

But I don't know, I'm just a console gamer. PS, 2, 3, 4, 5, PSP, PTV, xBox, xBox360, Nintendo, SuperNintendo, Wii, Atari 2600.

Can PS5 play off external SSD?

You can store PS5 games on an external storage device, but you cannot play them directly from there. You have to copy the game data back to the PS5's internal SSD storage beforehand. The advantage: This is much faster than having to download the game again.
