the one thing I have left to reload after the crash is preps. I have never loaded preps, and its not going well, I have a license key and a number with the disk that I have. I install the program ok, it never asks for the license key or the number.
when i go to launch preps it tells me theres a problem with the license. this is preps 4.1 we did have 4.2 so that will be an upgrade. I hope theres someone out there that is using this old version or remembers. worst case can someone give me the website for support?

Joe

Will it let you do a keyboard combo of COMMAND + U while you are within Preps? If it will, it will bring up a dialogue box asking for your password, I think. It does in Preps 5 anyway.

Tracy,

I checked the User Guide for my Preps 5. It says:

QuoteAfter you install the hardware key and the Preps software, you need to
provide a password. You have to perform this task only once. Until you
provide the password, Preps does not run.
First Installation
If this is your first installation of Preps, your password is on a paper in a
sleeve attached to your software box.

I'm thinking maybe you need to install the drivers for the dongle before Preps will ask you for your password. From the Preps manual again:

QuoteThe hardware key (dongle) is a copy-protection device that plugs into a
port on your computer. If the hardware key is not installed or loses its
programming, Preps cannot run.
If you are a new Preps customer, you have received an iKey® USB
(Universal Serial Bus) hardware key with your Preps package. If you are a
Preps customer upgrading or updating from a previous release of Preps,
you already have an ADB hardware key, an Eve® 3 USB hardware key, or an
iKey USB hardware key. Preps 5.0 does not run with an ADB dongle, so if
you have an ADB dongle, you need to pay an exchange fee and switch from
an ADB dongle to an iKey USB dongle. In the Americas, call1-800-999-5539. In Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Middle
East, contact your local reseller or Creo sales representative. You can find
your local contact by visiting the Creo Web site at http://www2.creo.com/
utilities/contact/Main.asp.
The USB port that accepts an iKey hardware key is identified by the
USB symbol shown here. If you need to connect more than one
device to the USB port, you can use a hub.
To install a USB dongle:
1. The computer can be either on or off when you insert the USB dongle.
Unplug any device currently connected to the USB port you want to
use.
2. Plug the iKey into the USB port.
If you have more than one device that needs to plug into the USB port, plug
a USB hub into the port and plug the devices into the hub.
For information about entering your password, see Chapter 4, Preps
Password.

thanks joe, i think it is the dongle needing installed somehow before i can go on.
I think I saw the drivers for the dongle, can i put it with my other drivers or does it need to stay in the preps folders?
basically can you tell me how to install the driver?
i will try the phone number if i cant get it.

Tracy,

You are running Preps 4 on OS 9 right? Attached is a sit file with the Mac OS 9 dongle drivers. Uncompress them and place the files in the folder named "Place in Extensions Folder" in the Mac "System Folder:Extensions" folder. Then try starting Preps and see if it asks for your password.

Also, here is a link to the Preps download page in case you need anything else.

Tracy,

When you uncompress the sit file I attached above you will have a folder called "place in extensions folder" with 3 files in it. Copy those 3 files from that folder to your "System Folder:Extensions" folder. You might need to restart classic after that.
