I never thought PNG files would become a part of 4 color printing but I'm seeing more all the time. Are they reliable for separations?

I've been warning them ahead of time and let 'em run as long as the client knows the iffiness of png.

I have recently been getting a plethora of .svg files, but they're not bad

SVG = vector files for web. Better than .png but still shouldn't be used for print. But you know how that goes.

I just open in Illy, correct color, and resave

Well, that's setting a fine example for the rest of the prepress world!
Now the boss will expect me to fix the files that come in. What a precedent!

Cursed me - I got TWO jobs today that were only PNG files! even better, they were just Screenshot files from a Mac.

I did NOT go the extra mile however, just placed & pushed those steaming piles through.
A little diddie 'bout black 'n cyan...two reflective colors doin' the best they can.

My understanding is that much like JPEG, the format itself is not an issue in and of itself. If it is CMYK and high enough resolution, Indesign will rip separations. (It will also rip separations from low res RGB PNGs too but you'll get what you get.)

The issue is that almost all PNGs and JPEGs were or are intended for web use and to prepress people are a huge RED FLAG that the Deziner is lazy or ignorant of prepress standards. Maybe that is all they have, maybe thats all they know. I just take extra care and make someone sign off on the results...
