Title: Kodak approval not showing up as appletalk printer
Post by: G_Town on September 02, 2009, 10:12:30 AM
The folks in the art dept had an issue with the pc running there approval software (harly rip) IT supposedly fixed the issue but it's not showing up when we go to create a new printer. The inputs on the rip say the are running, I've rebooted and tried a few things but can't figure out why it isn't being published as an appletalk printer.

Do you know the printer's IP address? Try that...

Yes I do, just set it up as an IP printer?

Yeah. Try it. I had to set up one of ours like that on my new(er) iMac running 10.5.

The approval does have the checkbox or whatever checked to enable it as an AppleTalk device, right? Have you tried different Macs and see if any of them see it under AppleTalk?

Yea it's just a tired old harlequin rip I've checked the inputs for appletalk and they are all on, the weird thing is when they first asked me to look at it you could see the printer in appletalk as a shared printer and when we looked at the properties it was showing the IP address of another mac in the department like it was sharing the printer. I had them shut off the printer sharing figuring we'd do it the right way and just set up everyone with a printer, shortly after that it dropped off the list of available printers and hasn't ben seen since.

Have you found out what Mac originally had it as a shared printer?
Could you try that one and see if it shows up?
Check the settings on that other Mac to see if it is connected to the network in a different way. You never know about these IT guys, sometimes they forget how they set-up one machine when they do another one 5 minutes later.

You using AFP or SMB?

...and David may be on to something with SMB

AFB, yep tried the that mac no diff, I'll check the network settings again but I'm pretty sure they are they same, I know at least we are all on a different network then the rest of the plant.

Okay G_Town. What OS is this beast running? Win 2000 server? Win 2003 server? Win 2008 server? And can all of your other computers see other Appletalk devices like laser printers and Nexus printers etc...? And can you see Appletalk file shares from this Windows server?
Title: Re: Kodak approval not showing up as appletalk printer
Post by: David on September 04, 2009, 11:08:16 AM
okay, 'nother stupid question...

what are you printing to the Approval?
PDFs or tiff files?

Do you have to have the Host software installed to print to the Approval?

The reason I ask, we use Esko RIPs for our Approvals and we had to install the Host Software for our RIP to "see" the Approval.

And we send a special composite 1-bit tiff to ours.

Post by: tapdn on September 04, 2009, 11:21:32 AM
For what it's worth we don't actually "print" to our Rip, but have hot folders set up on the Windows machine where the Rip software resides. A folder for each type paper. Files dropped into folder are  ripped, trapped and one bit tiff sent to hot folder on the Mac that controls the printer.

Win 2000 Server, yep everything else works fine no other issues with any other AFP device, just mounted my mac from it.

They open it in the native app, illy PS etc.. and just do a straight print to the rip.

I'll check to see if there's any software needed. I gotta believe it's something with the rip since it was working before the virus removal, maybe a port needs to be opened, hell I don't know this is what I get for sticking my nose in another dept.

I'll check

OK, I think it's safe then to say it's not the Macs, not the network, and not the Windows OS. That leaves the RIP. I have to believe either there is a setting not set or it could be file corruption during the IT search & destroy mission. For some reason the RIP is NOT broadcasting the Appletalk printers to the network. Focus on the RIP.

yeah, you could be trying to infect the RIP with who knows what and it will cause the whole world to be...

DOOMED!

Ok I think it's appletalk I can only mount the PC using SMB if I try to use appletalk it doesn't see the pooter.

Tried stopping the service and turning back on, no luck.

Open Services on the PC and stop the File Sharing for Macintosh service. Then go into your Network properties and uninstall the Appletalk protocol. Reboot, then reinstall. Then probably have to reboot again. Check again.

Cool Joe I'll give it a whirl.

There is no File Sharing for Macintosh service. So I uninstalled the appletalk protocol rebooted and reinstalled and rebooted.

Nada

I noticed in the services there's a log and appletalk keeps coming up no default adapter has been configured so appletalk was not initialized blaa blaa.

So it's appletalk that's the culprit. If get properties on appletalk it says its using the same adapter as TCP/IP and everything checks out ok.

Possibly an exorcism is in order. :undecided:

Hey G, I know earlier you said IT had "fixed" it. They most likely re-installed something from the original Win 2000 CD that replaced some of the newer SP4 files. Anytime you (they) do this you have to re-install the latest service pack. I would re-download SP4 from the MS site, uninstall SP4, and then re-install SP4 fresh. Good luck dude.
