General Prepress / page boxes
June 12, 2015, 01:40:40 AM
Pitstop does a great job -most of the times - defining trimbox  from crop marks when the file was made with illy, indy or quark.

But with corel, photoshop and other kinds of pdf's i don't find it very handy.

I'm lucky to have heidi's toolbox, the geometry tool is very easy and quick to use.

A friend of mine with no pitstop or heidi's toolbox place them to indy to make proper pageboxes.

What do you do?

Thanks in advance!

Not dealing very much with ps lately,i tried to measure something with vanishing point.

But the ruler/measure tool is missing.

Google it,didn't find similar cases.

Here's my toolbox

All these with ps CS6 64bit -not extended-,in a win7 ultimate machine with lots of memory.

Have they removed the measuring  option from the filter,or am i doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance!

General Prepress / job prepare time
May 08, 2015, 11:57:59 PM
Hi all!

Got a job with:

36 job cards.

With 6 different trimmed sizes.

10 of them with defined trim boxes based on job description.

All the others being corel pdf's,tif's,or photoshop pdf's with crop marks unidentifiable by pitstop.

Some to be laminated, varnish only for the others.

Some prints in both sides, rest one.

In two different quantities.

Each card in it's own file folder, and all two sided cars with separate files -pdf or tif- for each side.

To be gang printed in a way that paper can be cut afterwards to be send for laminating only the ones needs lamination, and in a way to help the printer set ink zones at it's best, and after lamination cards needs cut as soon as possible and as easy as it gets.

I'd like -if you will- to get an answer  on how much time would you think you needed to prepare this kind of job and set it ready for plate making.

I'll tell you how long it took me after i get some answers, cause it took much more than i guessed and i find it pretty embarrassing...

I'd also like to hear how often you get to see such jobs!

Thanks in advance!

CTP - CTF / cp85
July 28, 2014, 03:13:41 AM
Ok, I didn't catch up with amusing details from the previous post, but I saw you got the picture anyway, and fortunately for me they give up on the old processor.

But I now I'm having problems with the cp 85,posted that on printplanet too,so I'm just coping, hope you don't mind!

We have a cp85 for azzura plates, manual feeding it.

Lately the right side of the plates came of the the proccesor with thin layers of gum on them, and finally the layer of gum covered all the plate surface.

I switched front and back cylinders with no succes, but the tech told me that the dryer cylinders are the same,so i put the dryer cylinders before the dryer and plates started came out nice and clean again.

But only for a few plates.

Today there are some signs on the right side of the plate again -as you feed it into the processor-,they are barely visible but i don't know when and how soon will it detiorate.

There is also some gum leftovers on the right side of the surface between the cleaning and the dryer section.

The processor is only three years old, major cleaned every month and produced less than 500 plates a month!

Do you think thats normal ware for such a low volume,or the cylinders-or the clips that keep them in place- just ware out after a couple of years no matter the plates they proccess?

Or could be some other issue, bad maintenance for example?

Thanks in advance!

ps I attached some photos-very low quality from my cellphone- with the plates before i used the dryer cylinders.

The gum layer is all over,on the right is far more obvius so i used my fingers to help you see it on the rest of the plate!

CTP - CTF / Old plate processor.
June 12, 2014, 12:59:08 AM
Hi all!

My boss insists that we can make ctp plates on our old film to plate possessor.

-That's a LASTRA ATTREZZATURE SM 90 with temperature, speed and replenishment controls available-

We tried so far some TPK plates-which were a disaster- and abezeta plates which are far better.

Before i get into any details,i'd like to know if anyone have succeeded using his old conventional plate processor with new positive ctp plates,or if you know someone who did.

Thanks in advance!

Bindery / offset sealer?????
January 27, 2014, 05:00:36 AM
Halo!

Anybody knows what an ''offset sealer'' is?

First i thought it was an elegant way to say varnish, but then lower in the job specs, varnish was described as ''varnish'',no offset sealer, protection etc.

Have a look if you please...

Finished size: 21x29,7
Text: 152 pages printed 4+4 colors + offset sealer
Matt paper 115 gs
Cover: 4 pages 4+4 colors + offset varnish
Matt paper 200 gsm
Finishing: sew binding

So if anyone has an idea, please let us know!

General Prepress / Error compensation
January 10, 2014, 02:29:00 AM
I really don't know if the thread title really is relative enough,so any admin is welcome to change it with something more descriptive.

We printed a job with a pocket on the inside of the book's cover.

We print this think every know and then with minor copy changes-same sizes papers etc-,but the last one had a slight -but significant-difference on the cover's die cut which i didn't notice.

Unfortunately it wasn't seen by the person who performed the die cut operation-how's that in plain english?- even though i provided a proof,so we are reprinting it right now.

I rarely make mistakes, took all the blame by myself-which is right, for i'm responcible for checking the die cuts as well.

I wanted to ask a couple of thinks.

If you were ever charged for a prepress mistake,i mean if you actually paid the bill.

If there is a legal notice on that.

And finally no matter what the ''law'' says on that-that an employee should pay or not- i'd like to hear your opinions.

Hope i made my questions clear enough, not a native speaker as you might guessed.

If not tell what and i'll try to rephrase.

Thanks in advance!

ps Only asking for informative reasons since US laws and work ethics don't apply to Greece!

Looking for Work / Looking for advice...
September 19, 2013, 01:46:24 PM
Funny how after 15 years on the trade,my first question on a prepress forum is not about print...

So after trying to get into packaging-without much success-,while watching the printshop i work for declining day by day,I decided i should give it a try with ''the web''.

I see-mostly read about to be honest- a lot of former prepress operators moving on that way-even here there is a section about web design/development.

Problem is i wouldn't know how or where to start.

I'm not a designer.

I can design a leaflet,or a poster,i can even draw-pencil or wacom- but this is not my job.

I don't code.

I troubleshoot software and hardware problems on the shop, but i'm not a programmer.

Plus there isn't any web related activity where i work- except from fb but i don't have an account  :azn:

So,if you're kind enough, how did you get there?
-from prepress to ''the web''-

Where a prepress employee could be good at a web oriented business?
Design ? Development ?Cleaning the dust from the servers?

And why a company wouldn't hire a designer,or a developer on the first place and choose an ex-prepress operator?

Any answers given-even those not asked- will be held of great value, along with maybe where and what to start reading/practicing on...

Thanks in advance!
