Opacity masks in CS2

How and why would someone put an opacity mask on this gradient.
When I release the mask,I don't see a difference.

These objects with opacity masks are dropping out when I run tickets through Backstage.(ESKO)
Because it feels good !

Looks to me like they did it so the gradient would overprint the background ("multiply" adds the gradient to the values already present underneath) which is unnecessary since they could have just set the gradient to the values they wanted to achieve. At least that is my best guess.

What happens if you change "multiply" to normal?

But,you can set something to Multiply with out using a opacity mask,eh?

Yeah. Too many ways to do things and designers find a way to use the least likely.
