I'd never actually done a preflight in Acrobat till this discussion came up. I probobly don't have the set-up right but hell, this could sure scare the hell out of someone who didn't know better! This was from a 64pg. 1 color job that I KNOW is going to be ok because I opened everything up and experience has shown  that there was nothing to be afraid of.

also we would'nt have that delightful easter egg of the alien with the bazooka blowing up the little guy. It's such a classic that it hasn't changed since verion 3? i think. Stunning display, I watch it at least once a month

must be in the newest version, we're still using 6.53 in Acrobat 7.

like I said, it's suprising how fast you can check when you've been doing it for years.

Nobody knows what the hell I'm doing when I'm checking graphics....guess I sorta look like Edward Scissorhands or something..

never tried preflight software......

Long ago when I first got into this racket and was being taught, my trainer said to open everything and check it myself. I've always done it that way. Of course with pitstop and Indesign's output preview it's become a lot easier. We generally color correct everything that comes through here so we'd have to open up all pics anyway. After you've done it this way for a long time you get very fast and very good at picking out problems.

I think it's best for designers who don't want to pay out big bucks having prepress people fix their messes.

But we don't do huge books or catalogues here, maybe you'd need it in that case.

I wouldn't recommend owning QUARK and a FIREARM at the same time, I personally think that is a bad combination.l

Quark Xpress / Good things about Quark

Anyone have anything good to say about Quark for a change?

I do.

When you quit the application it closes quickly, most of the adobe apps take forever it seems.

Tips & Tricks / text to outlines in Acrobat
October 01, 2007, 08:29:31 AM
Here's one I use a lot....

many times we'll have a problematic font in a pdf, especially when printing to one of our canon b&w printers (the rip isn't as advanced as the Apogee).

You can convert all the text in a pdf to outlines but only if it contains transparency. So you add a watermark (see settings in picture) and make sure the opacity is at 0 and the convert text to outlines is checked then you use the transparency flattener and all text will be outlined.
