Adobe InDesign / Re: Numbering in InDesign
September 06, 2018, 06:45:05 AM
Most of the numbering jobs we do are DL tickets with a tear off stub, so each ticket has 2 numbers and they go 6 up on SRA3.

I have tried to make this work in InDesign any number of ways and here's the problem;  to avoid collating individual tickets, sheet 1 has 001 top left, sheet 2 has 002 top left and so on.  This means you just have to restack the blocks of sheets as you cut them and all your tickets are in order.

If you have 100 tickets to do that's 17 pages, so the second ticket on the sheet is 0018 (the rest follow on as you would expect).  If you are doing 250 tickets the second ticket on the sheet is 0043.  So the numbers on each sheet change depending on the total number of tickets required.

I started to do a template for 100 tickets, then one for 250, but we get orders for 130, 300, any kind of number and each one would need a new template.

Even linking from different excel sheets won't work because you need to link to different boxes on the sheet depending on the total number of tickets required, so again you have a different template for each total number required.

Quite quickly I realised the folly of this approach and we now use a numbering program which takes your PDF artwork, steps it up and places the numbers correctly depending on the total required.  Much easier.

Macintosh / Re: Secure delete

Not sure why it was removed from the GUI but if you think it would stop anybody recovering data I've seen evidence to the contrary.  The only secure delete involves an axe, and that's not 100%.

Yeah the Text Cleanup will be very useful - I am also grateful for 'PDF Export Single Pages'.  I won't need it very often, but dayum when I need it it will be a lifesaver.

I went back to the PDFKEY site to see if they had any new features and found their sister product...

https://pdfextractor-app.com/en/

Now that's a utility!

Very nice

Was fantasising about this being built in to InDesign only last week.  Make it happen Adobe !
Right now I do this by stripping out the pics with PhotoShop, Copy + Pasting the text in Acrobat which also identifies the fonts, and using Illustrator to isolate any vector items I might need.

I learned of a new way around a locked PDF and it's too good to keep to myself.

I used to use a website that would take your PDF and email you back an unlocked one.  I had lost the link so I googled it and found this instead;

1) Open a new tab in Chrome browser (not sure if it works with other browsers)
2) Drag and drop the locked PDF into the browser window - it uploads and displays the PDF
3) instead of Downloading it again go to Print and select Save as PDF
4) This saves an UNLOCKED version of the PDF to your Desktop (or wherever)

You're welcome.

Combination of this and Net Neutrality row in US is a real shitstorm potentially.  Makes me more likely to go dark web.

At work we use DropBox for sending big files and customers sometimes send us artwork on YouSendIt or suchlike but we don't use it for backing up work, no.  We recently installed a humongous NAS drive which serves our mixed network.  First time I copied anything onto it there was an echo . . .

Adobe Illustrator / Re: Conical Label 1.0
June 12, 2018, 06:18:44 AM
Its not free.

"You need to purchase a licence in order to use the plugin"

BTW I wondered what you might need a conical label for and all I came up with was
1) Bottle Neck Promo and
2) Butt Plug

First time I saw the name B4 Print I knew it was US based cos in Europe B4 is a paper size and that would be just so confusing.

That sounds a bit pricey - I got a Western Digital 1Tb SSD external for £45 - they are now selling at £37

Obviously these are UK prices but Western Digital are an American company.

General Prepress / Re: Extended gamut (7 colour) printing

7 colour printing? Anyone remember Hexachrome? That was CMYK+Orange+Green usually.
Joking aside, the HP Indigo is a 7 colour digital press which I have seen amazing results from.  They were running CMYK+ Orange+Violet.  Good for more accurate colour matching of the Pantone gamut which CMYK can't do very well.  It's supposed to be able to run spot colours as well.  I used to have a 6 colour desktop inkjet which was great for photos (CMYK+lightC+lightM).
