Tips & Tricks / Re: Firefox passwords...

Quote from: mwc on September 17, 2007, 11:36:16 AMThat's not surprising to me....If you tell a program to remember your passwords...and you don't have a master password set to access them...how can you expect to be secure? The computer doesn't know who is at the keyboard...be it you or your wife...unless you have different user accounts set up. Man, did she find all your porn passwords?....bummer  ;D --- Clear Private data does nothing to passwords if you save them without a master password for access...

you know, i never really worry about it much, my pc and lappy at home i dont worry about, my wife wont touch them  ;) Im still not sure how she figured it out, all she does on that damn thing is read dooce and play at pogo.

my pc at work gets the occasional snoop, but i dont really have anything on there i need to worry about except mp3s. i dont worry about ppl hunting and poking their way through my bookmark list, theyll be lucky to guess visit any sites that require logins..

but the FF "show passwords" lists them all there for you, no guesswork required.

i purge my history and crap about once a week here just-in-case too, you never know..

so ive had pitstop for about a year now, ill admit i really dont use it all that much, for one reason or another, it just dosent appeal to me. maybe im missing something. i will just usually edit pdfs in illustrator unless it wont display properly, then i fallback on pitstop.

the purdy inteface? dont you love when they totally revamp the application interface? makes you feel like its all new again  :P

man i dont know what i would do without acrobat, its a lifesaver. if they would just build in a feature to make spreads without purchasing a plugin...

Tips & Tricks / Firefox passwords...
September 13, 2007, 05:58:26 PM
I had this post in another thread, but figured it was more appropriate here:

speaking of firefox, do you know if you have it remember your passwords, and you dont have a master password set on firefox, ANYONE can view your logins/passes by just opening your browser? my wife showed this to me last week and i almost crapped my pants..

go to tools>options>security and click on  "show passwords" it will list them all.  If you set a master password, then it will make you verify before it shows you, but then anytime you visit a page with a login it will prompt you for your master pass again..  By default, theres no master password set.. Ive been using FF ever since and this was all news to me, and i consider myself "up on things"

General Prepress / Re: Any XMPie users here?
September 13, 2007, 02:29:44 PM
nope. i was pressing for xmpie, ended up with friggin planetpress instead. talk about a piece of sheet. that damn thing is so hard to program for vdp, i think you need a degree in conditional statements or something.  then we got a french-canadian guy to train us on it, he couldnt even get it to do a simple mailmerge on a 4-up 8x11 sheet.  fortunately i can fall back on data merge in indesign or (i hate to admit this) PUBLISHER! (the mail merge feature actually comes in handy when doing x-ups)

CTP - CTF / Mitsubishi RIP's
September 12, 2007, 10:15:53 PM
so does anyone out there have an older mitsubishi rip/platesetter? (ill have to update the model number tomorrow).

we have one thats pretty old, still works, but we cant get support for it anymore.

im about 2 miles away from the one i use - the pressroom is in our municipal center, but my office is in city hall. i send files to the queue that are ready for output, then the pressmen output the plates. the problem is that when files wont process, I cant seem to find an error log or anything on the RIP. i just get a phone call from the press operator saying "it wont process", and thats it.. usually it turns out to be some crappy graphic somewhere, but 99% of the time im guessing because i get no real info from the operator.. its a crappy situation that will take an act of god or higher to change.

the last time this happened, NONE of the files i dropped in the queue would process. after taking a drive over to figure out what was going on, in turns out the hard rive on the RIP was full, and it would just abort when processing new jobs.  turns out the pressmen love to archive old jobs without deleting them, EVER!.. got that fixed, butim just thinking that that thing has to report to an error log somewhere when jobs dont process. i just cant find it. any ideas?

Pressroom / Re: Do you have digital presses?

Quote from: Joe on September 10, 2007, 11:09:34 AMOur "piece of crap color copier" folds and staples too. Can I call it a bindery line too?

man, youre lucky you got the finisher on yours. my jackass management analyst axed the finisher from our high speed color printer. then they bitch about taking too much time doing "handwork" on jobs..

here we have a 2-color toko, an ab dick 1color and another abdick that strictly envelopes. we outsource our full color work to local trade printers, and then the rest is all digital copiers.

The Rest... / Re: Publisher to PDF
September 12, 2007, 04:59:33 PM
do this:

right-click on a blank spot on your toolbar (where there are no icons)

you should see a menu for your buttons, and there should be an "acrobad pdf maker", just check it and it should reappear..

Freelance / Re: Anyone working at home also?
September 12, 2007, 02:17:23 PM
not anymore.. I started just doing freelance work, which seemed to be "feast or famine" it was more of a hobby than anything, but apparently people liked it and wanted to give me money, so i took it. Now im so tired of sitting in front of a pc all day i dont even touch mine at home, unless im playing a 3d shooter or email.. every now and then i take on a freelance job, i try not to make a habit of it though.
