Title: Update Mojave to Big Sur
Post by: pspdfppdfxhd on January 11, 2022, 07:10:25 AM
We've finally reached the point where we have to upgrade from Mojave to Big Sur. Adobe applications are no longer compatible.

Entails upgrades to the RIP, Pitstop, Quite Imposing and QuarkXpress. :vomit: (one client still uses it). Just wondering if there is something I should look out for that might be a surprise.

Thanks.

You could also get another Mac that runs Montery or Big Sur to just run the Adobe apps. And then remote into that for the times you need it. Just a thought.

I spent the last couple of months working upgrading all Macs to either Catalina or Big Sur. Catalina can run the latest CC but probably won't be able to with the next release. We have several iMacs that can't run Big Sur though so its not my problem the next time Adobe releases the next version. We had to wait that long waiting for Prinergy/Preps to become Big Sur capable.

Everyone in the shop uses Apple Mail. No one but me likes the new version in Big Sur. The icons in the toolbar are further over to the right than in previous versions and can't be moved seems to be their biggest gripe. I've gotten used to it so it doesn't bother me now. It did at first. The search in Apple Mail in Big Sur is much improved.

Outside of that no big surprises.

I did the big jump from Mojave to Big Sur when the latest Adobe update came out that not longer worked with Mojave. i was pretty cautious about the upgrade but it all went surprisingly smooth. You will want to check all the apps you need are 64 bit apps, if not you will need to update them or find work arounds. One thing you can do is run an older version of Mac OS as a VM to run any older software that you need to have and can't update.

I noticed some nice general snappiness in Big Sur, though I hate that the wide widget bar is gone where you could have a calculator. I used that regularly as it was simple and easy with hot corners. This really was a step back and seems to be Apples approach lately of pulling features and adding more useless pretty ones

Yeah I forgot about the widget bar with the calculator in it. My boss was pretty upset about that. In reality using the calculator from you dock is only one mouse click so it really is not any less convenient using it from there than where the widget location was.

Now I gotta know what the heck you're talking about with this widget bar?

It is completely different when using hot corners. With a hot corner I move to the corner I have set and I can basically start typing my calculation, with the dock I have to click the calculator, load the program, type my numbers. When I want to use again I have to bring to the forefront. The widget sidebar is always a gesture away and ready when you need it. It is simple but super efficient

Pre Big Sur it was in the upper right hand corner in the menu bar where it has notifications and widgets. It doesn't say widgets though at least on Catalina, it says Today and has room for widgets one of which is the Apple calculator, weather, stocks, calendar etc...it is pretty sparse on the widgets available. Big Sur completely eliminated widgets.

Sweet - never used it that way before. Of course, maybe I shouldn't do it since now I know it's being taken away next time I upgrade!

Same here Joe,  just finished upgrading/moving from 3 x 2012 Mac Pro's to 2018 Mac Mini's the 3.7 6core 64gb Ram model.  All running Big Sur.
Started from scratch on all 3 no migrating anything...worth it!  Those Mac mini's are impressive.

I have two 2012 Mac Pro's still active in prepress.  I used OpenCore Patcher by Martin Lo to run Big Sur on them...works great!!
One of them is mine...I also have a Thunderbolt card.  I just love the 2012 Mac Pro....don't want to let it go, I got one at home with the same set up.
Use VPN to work from home when needed works flawlessly.

I too miss the calculator in the widgets on the right....widgets are there but you can't add to them you can only delete the ones present.

I just used OpenCore Patcher to install Monterey on my Late 2013 iMac at home yesterday. Works great. Monterey has a lot more widgets than Big Sur but still no calculator.

Hey peeps, going to need some help, I have let things get behind.
My OS is Mojave, my computer is Late 2015 iMac i7

to do a fresh install do you still need to have the OS on a USB or
can you install using the app in the app folder?
I have Big Sur and Monterey there, I think Monterey is not compatible to pitstop
so going to do Big Sur.

anybody just install over the OS before? problems?

Yes you can install it straight from the Applications folder. It will install it over the top of Mojave and your apps, user accounts and all files will be retained.

Have you updated XMF so the client will run on Big Sur?

@Tracy I have done it many times. But I had it to hang up recently when trying to install over the Mojave OS to Big Sur. Luckily I did a Time Machine backup before I tried that so I could restore to Mojave and then I did a clean install of Big Sur and then imported the apps and existing user accounts from Mojave to Big Sur. I highly recommend a Time Machine backup before you proceed either way.

I have my XMF on my other Mac I don't update that Mac as I don't have an XMF license.

time machine I started doing backups, how would you restore to an OS from time machine?
I have never used time machine I'm not familiar with it.

since you had troubles I think maybe I should do a fresh install
do I still have to use a USB? I have my notes from last time except the part
about how I got it on the USB, I can google it.

I found instructions on making the bootable USB drive I'll get back to you
when I get this step done.

Now to find that USB I used last time!

Thanks Joe! still helping me!!
Title: Re: Update Mojave to Big Sur
Post by: Joe on January 24, 2022, 12:17:03 PM
Time Machine backup is done to an external hard drive. To do it right you leave that external hard drive connected and running 24/7 to the Mac. The first time it runs it does a full backup. After that it runs several backups daily to backup new and changed files so you ALWAYS have a complete current backup of your system.

If after doing the original backup you disconnected the external hard drive from your Mac you will need to connect it back to that iMac and let it run another backup to get it up to date before you proceed.

To make a backup bootable disk for Big Sur you will need a USB stick at least 16 GB as the Big Sur installer is over 12 GB. This is different than for previous OS instructions as previous ones would fit on a 4 GB disk. Here are the instructions from Apple for making the Big Sur bootable disk:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372

I only had an issue on 1 of about 8 - 10 iMacs I upgraded back in December so chances are you won't have an issue but as long as you have that Time Machine backup you should be good.

To restore from a Time Machine backup, after you install Big Sur and it is booting up it will give you the option of restoring. You will need to have the Time Machine backup external hard drive connected. Tell it you want to do the restore and the hard drive should show up allowing you restore from it. Always use the latest date/time backup to restore from. Select to restore applications, your user account, all files, and computer settings. It will prompt to create a password for the user account  it is restoring to. You can use the same password the account originally was. It will take some time. The more stuff you have to restore the longer it will take. The ones I did took about 2 - 3 hours to do the restore.

It should be able to use the Time Machine NAS as long you can see the NAS on the network and if it is going to restore over the network I highly recommend your Mac is using hardwired ethernet and not a wireless connection.

succesfully made the USB Installer!

Last time I manually added everything back into my computer, it's quite the deal
decided to keep my time machine backup on the NAS

does time machine do the drivers and email?
Title: Re: Update Mojave to Big Sur
Post by: Joe on January 25, 2022, 12:44:50 PM
Yes if, after you do a clean install, when it boots up the first time it will give you the option to bring stuff back. Select the most recent time machine backup from the NAS and it will restore your user account with all files, emails, contacts, applications, printers, and computer settings. Once it is restored you should be good to go. There may be additional updates to do on the Mac OS and if you have been running Mojave previously there will be the new versions of Creative Cloud apps that you can install.

Usually they work. If not re-install. The only issue might be the printers may be too old to have Big Sur drivers. I had a couple like that and I installed either Mojave or Catalina drivers and mine worked. Your mileage may vary.

Title: Re: Update Mojave to Big Sur

Yeah that is known issue with restoring from Time Machine but not all of the time. On my system all of my data is actually on Macintosh HD - Data but the only drive on my Desktop shows it as Macintosh HD so mine is working the way it should. Read this thread and see if it matches what you are seeing:

Two Volumes Named "Macintosh HD - Data" Now Appear in Disk Utility in Addition to "Macintosh HD" (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250731491)

Should you decide to do what it says in that post just make sure you are deleting the correct one. Or else you will be starting over.

it concerns me that it has 1TB when Macintosh HD should have 2TB?

thanks for that link I will try and fix when I can understand what I'm doing better.
most people don't have any space on the HD-data, that concerns me

It's not causing a huge problem yet, I just have to unmount so time machine can backup
Title: Re: Update Mojave to Big Sur

My Macintosh HD shows -- used and zero KB available while my Macintosh HD - Data shows 204.81 GB used and 741.25 GB available so it is mounting Macintosh HD - Data but it shows up as Macintosh HD. Weird.

OK..unfortunately it appears that at some point the system partitioned your 2 TB hard drive into two separate 1 TB partitions because it looks like both of your Macintosh HD - Data partitions are both 1 TB and both contain data.

How do you feel about doing a fresh install again? :wow:

The fix would be to boot from USB installer again and partition your internal hard drive as a single 2 TB partition and name it Macintosh HD and do another fresh install to it and the installer will create any other partitions it may need. Then bring back your data via the Time Machine Backup again. I'm pretty sure that would fix your problem.

Just don't shoot the messenger.  :machinegun:

Yes we've had snow for a long time already. And you just have to assume everywhere you step outside is a sheet of ice. Currently have late 2012  27" iMacs running Mojave. Catalina is the last OS that this iMac will run.

Anyone remember having any issues going from Mojave to Catalina?

Hopefully this will be the last update for these iMacs and finally they will be forced to upgrade as we will also only get 1 more update for Adobe before it will need an OS update to run.

Cheers

Just upgraded several 2012 iMacs at the end of last year to Catalina. No issues to speak of other than our Mojave users that were still using the old free version of Linotype Font Explorer were forced to abandon it.

My home iMac is a late 2013 that Apple said Catalina was the last for it. Using Open Core I am now running Monterey on it. It is running great on it.

Could you give a brief explanation of Open Core, or where to get more info? I did a quick search and not sure I was looking at the correct thing.

One thing about doing that is you need to do a clean install so make sure you have a backup to restore your data if you want to keep anything. Even at that, my first attempt failed with some kind of weird error. Powered off and ran the installer again with no issues.

Just remember when you boot into the installer to open Disk Utility and partition the top level partition of your internal hard drive as one single 2 TB partition.

Great. went to do the upgrade to Catalina and have had to postpone.

We currently are running Microsoft Office 2011 and Command Workstation 5.x (as interface for our Xerox J75 which is about to die.) Both of which will not run on Catalina.

We can't update to the latest Adobe cloud apps without Catalina, however there is quite a bit of reluctance to do the software and hardware upgrades that are needed. Also a fair bit of noise around not replacing Macs with Macs (that are now almost 10 yrs old) but going PC instead.

One thing the bean counters don't understand about iMac vs PC is that the whole computer system is in one single unit in an iMac...including a quality Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, 5K 27" monitor and a decent GPU. Spec out a similar PC with a good bluetooth mouse and keyboard and a 5K 27" monitor and an equal GPU and see what the price difference is. Hint: Not much.

And to add to that, the iMac will still be productive 3 yrs after the 2nd replacement PC has been confined to landfill

3 yrs? We don't replace until at least 5 yrs or unless something breaks. Which hasn't happened. And we've been lucky with our PCs too, but they are only in the shop for specific functions, and thus aren't taxed too much. So they last too.

He said 3 years after the 2nd replacement PC has been confined to landfill. Not productive for just 3 years. In the shop I just retired from they still have several 2012 and 2014 iMacs chugging away.

Okay, so i got the Macintosh HD - Data on my desktop too. No Macintosh HD. Installed Big Sur on the weekend. First attempt off the flash drive failed so I did it the second time and it worked. (this might have something to do with it). I realized i could not copy anything into Macintosh HD - Data but wondered if this was a Big Sur thing. When I opened up disk utility there was no Macintosh HD, Just Macintosh HD - Data AND Macintosh HD - Data - Data. Yes, 2 Datas. So in disk utility i renamed Macintosh HD - Data to Macintosh HD. Now i can copy files there. I hope i have made myself clear! :drunk3: :drunk3:

OK once you boot to your USB installer open Disk Utility. Mine looks like this below. Go to the View menu and make sure that "Show All Devices" is checked. The top level of my hard drive is the one that started with Micron which contains Container disk1 and the Macintosh HD which also contains Macintosh HD and Macintosh HD - Data. Click on the top level Macintosh HD and click erase. It will warn you that erasing it will delete the system volume "Macintosh HD" and the data volume "Macintosh HD - Data". Make sure the format is set to APFS and click the Erase button. When it finishes you should only have the Macintosh HD with no volumes listed under it and that is fine. The installer will create them for you when you tell it to install to the Macintosh HD and hopefully the correct one is what you see on your desktop when you are done.

Thanks Joe. I have a 2012 mini at home I will try this on this weekend. I'm excited.

Had to revert my Late 2013 iMac back to Catalina after the Monterey 12.2.1 update that it installed last night. The update disabled Metal support on the GPU and it made EVERYTHING slow and jerky and web browsers would not load pages. It was basically unusable and I didn't want to have this fight every time a new update comes out. I will stick with Catalina until this old iMac dies. I guess there is a good reason why Apple removes support for older models.

Quote from: pspdfppdfxhd on January 11, 2022, 07:10:25 AMWe've finally reached the point where we have to upgrade from Mojave to Big Sur. Adobe applications are no longer compatible.

Entails upgrades to the RIP, Pitstop, Quite Imposing and QuarkXpress. :vomit: (one client still uses it). Just wondering if there is something I should look out for that might be a surprise.

Thanks.

Sooo.. I guess I had started this thread way back when, but there has been alot of water under the bridge since. Well, the startup issue was the control board. The part is going to be installed mid next week if it comes in as expected. The Mac repair guy gave us a loaner and put our hard drive in it so that's pretty cool. The windows box i remote to also needed a new control board. WTF? I went into work on Friday and both computers were gone! I felt like I was homeless or
something!

Fiery XF server would not activate on the pc because it was not deactivated beforehand. How can you do that when your pc dies? Anyway they were quick to respond and resolve the issue. I am still waiting for the VDP plugin company from Meadows to do the same on the loaner Mac.

So I will be going in AGAIN on this holiday weekend to at least get the Epson up and running.  We need to send a color proof out on Tuesday.

Cheers!  :drunk3:  :drunk3:

Hmmm, thought I had posted this previously but maybe I only hit the preview button.

We have BigSur up and running, using the latest pitstop and Acrobat, but Acrobat is buggy as hell. When ever you go from one page to the next you give a double flash, it's crazy. Mostly when the output preview is open. I am concerned that I may have a seizure here. :o

Well it may be worth trying it with just Acrobat and Pitstop installed. If you still have issues you can rule out Quite Imposing. If you don't have issues you can safely blame Quite Imposing. At least you will known one way or the other.

Talking to myself again...

I have Monterey 12.2.1 running again on my unsupported 2013 iMac. OpenCore came out with patch for the Video Card GPU bringing back Metal support. All updated and working fine again. Walk through for installing Monterey on an unsupported Mac (https://jensd.be/1589/apple/install-macos-monterey-on-unsupported-models).

Thanks for the update Joe, I noticed in the past week or so that things have been a bit jerky and slow too on my 2012 mini, since I did an update. I was figuring it's just time to finally bite the bullet and buy myself a (dare I say it) new Mac. I think my late new one was a Centris 610 when I was in college. Ever since then, they have been used ones.

But I really want to try the M1 chip. So been think for the past couple of months of getting a Mac mini M1. And the Apple card payment is really nice. Monthly payment with no interest.

And then I could keep this older mini around for other stuff. Maybe a NAS? As I'm not worried about speed, as it will be just for home, and probably cheaper than buying a Synology.
Title: Re: Update Mojave to Big Sur

My late 2013 iMac video card supported Metal before the update to Monterey 12.2.1 which removed it thanks to Apples ongoing war with NVIDIA. If your card in the 2012 supported Metal before the update you can apply the update and fix it. If it didn't support Metal you either have to live with it or revert back 12.2 or even Big Sur. It shows how to do the patch in the link in my previous post.

I'd love to have an M1 Mac but just don't use a computer for much these days to justify the cost which is why I wanted to extend the life of this 2013 iMac.
