Kodak Preps / Re: Generating JDF for MBO folder
October 26, 2022, 06:44:31 AM
If you are not setting up the layout and folding patterns in your MIS, I don't see why you would need any connection from your MIS to Prinergy. Since you have Preps, I believe that is where you would need to create all of your data. Although I have not done it before.

We needed help from Kodak to setup Preps to be able to send the JDF out for our cutters. But we have never setup any folding instructions in Preps for our folders. As I have never been asked to figure that out (kinda surprised and glad it hasn't happened). So, I believe if you have Preps setup to send the JDF when you print the layout back to Prinergy and you have the folding pattern setup in Preps, it might work.

I've seen the folding patterns in Preps before but never had to deal with them.

I created a simple layout in Preps and printed it back to Prinergy to get the JDF, which I have attached. I told Preps to include the folding data too. But in looking at the JDF, I don't see it but maybe I just don't know how to read it.

Kodak Systems / Re: Kodak Business Link and MISĀ
October 26, 2022, 06:15:51 AM
We have EFI Pace with MDSF. We also have Kodak Prinergy with RBA and Harmony (we have ColorFlow and have been trained but it is overkill for us since we already have an ink optimize solution, and Harmony is WAY easier). And we have Alwan ColorHub for GCR and ink usage. All of these run on VMs and we no longer run into server slow downs. Plus they are so much easier to manage.

We used to have InSite and BusinessLink on physical Dell servers. InSite was back when it was Java based and our customers had a hard time working with it. And since we work with a lot of small customers it really didn't make sense in the end. And BusinessLink didn't give us all we were hoping for either. The problem with that is we were creating jobs in Prinergy multiple ways by the time we started with BusinessLink. We were bringing in jobs via RBA and having Prepress manually creating them. Not that it couldn't be worked out. It's just that we had already found a good workflow for us. And BusinessLink just muddied the waters.

What about random crap left way off on the paste board? Even picture boxes with missing links?

A sure sign of a professional designer for sure. ;)

I'm pretty sure you will need a device called a video wall controller to make them work as one.

Well with 64GB, you definitely need a couple of extra monitors to keep all those apps up and on screen all the time.

Quote from: Joe on August 12, 2022, 07:07:26 AMIf your actual CIP files were at 300 dpi they would be much larger than 1 MB. What kind of file is being sent to the location in your Device section of your output template? That is the file that will be 300 dpi.
Joe, our system is sending 'generic press interface' ppf files, so I'm assuming that is why they are so small. And we are not using the 'Device' tab in out Process Template. And they are being sent to a CIPLinkX server.

This may or may not help. We don't have a Manroland, but have KBA presses and Prinergy. We send our plate files separately from our CIP files. Our CIP files are rendered at 300 dpi with the preview set at 'Very High', where are plates are rendered at 2540 dpi 1-bit tiffs. And I believe the preview is just creating the basic thumbnail image for the pressman on their console for a visual of the job. But when they open the job on the console the 300 or in your case the 1600 image than shows. And our CIP files appear to be under 1mb in general.

Just about to head out the door, so I will double check the settings for the JDF. But if I remember correctly it is just a setting when you print from Preps back to Prinergy. But what might be the bigger issue, are you adding folding instructions to the Preps layouts? If not, it will not send anything back to the folders.

We do JDF to our cutters, but not our folders, so we don't add any folding instructions in Preps. Nor have I even brought that question up.

I remember having some transparency issues with Alwan too, when we first started using it. We worked with the developer and tweaked the settings, and found a solution. But it's been so long, I couldn't tell you what it was exactly.

I wish you luck in finding your solution, what ever it may be.

We use Prinergy, but do not use their ink optimization. But we do use a product called Alwan for GCR. And I would be happy to run a file through it for you, if you would like. Just send me a pm with the file.

It's not fully integrated, but could be with RBAs. But it is pretty quick, and with it not being automated the operators have to check the files (well at least should) once they are done GCR'ing and before going into Prinergy.

We've also had issues with old files from Freehand or Corel Draw or the likes. But it probably really isn't the file type, but how the file was created or manipulated over the years. And especially with a sh*t ton of vectors and transparencies not setup correctly. Or with special backgrounds or hidden layers. Just pull it into Photoshop, and it's "fixed". Or make a foreground (of text) file and background (of flattened transparencies) file, and splice it back together in Indesign. That usually will fix it too.

Try turning the computer off, and then back on.
And don't just look at it, to see if it's plugged in. Actually unplug it and plug it back in. I can't tell you the times I've had to do that for people who've said that it was plugged in, when the plug was only just barely sitting there looking like it was plugged in. :cannotlook:

Nuke app and delete all the setting files from orbit is the only way to be sure.
