Quark Xpress / Re: Picture effects and EPS

I just did a quick test and it worked.  I'm using Photoshop CS5 saved eps file though.  Don't have CS2 to check right now.

Quote from: Joe on February 06, 2011, 07:56:07 PMNormal users will probably not even notice the changeover from ipv4 to ipv6. System Admins will be doing all of the work.

This.

And people wonder why I moved away from sysadmin work shortly after I got out of school. At least in prepress when you save the day someone might say thinks or get lunch. Nobody likes the IT geeks.

Yeah thanks.  Now I have to learn a whole new way of doing things.  IPv4 had over 4 billion unique addresses by switching to IPv6 it is now 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456.  That's a lot of numbers and new configuring for DNS, subnetting and routing.

Also applejack cleans up some things.  I couldn't even start InDesign without it crashing earlier today, ran applejack and good as new.

Adobe InDesign / Re: Page Transition

We use a 3rd party software called 3D Issue http://www.3dissue.com/index2.html.  This takes pdfs and allows you to flip through the pages while achieving the "page flip" look.

CTP - CTF / Re: Image RIP Issue
January 03, 2011, 08:27:26 AM
I'll take a shot in the dark here since there isn't a lot of info to go on but I have run across this when a spot duotone is used in Photoshop.  It sounds like your purple blob matches what I've seen.  The PDF file that is distilled works and looks fine but when the RIP receives it there is a colored blob where the artwork should be.  I think it is PREPS doing something to it but haven't figured out that cause and it happens so infrequently I haven't put much time into it.

Enfocus / Re: Pitstop wish list

Quote from: Joe on December 23, 2010, 10:22:01 AMAfter using Pitstop 10 for awhile I have come to the conclusion I do not like the new Inspector in regards to moving the buttons for "Gray", "CMYK", "RGB", and "Spot" into the flyout menu. In Pitstop 7 you opened Inspector and clicked a button. Now you have to open Inspector, click the flyout, and then select the option you want. There are a lot of little things in Pitstop 10 that makes it more work than it used to be in Pitstop 7.

Agree as well.  I've been using Pitstop 7 and when I upgraded to 10 I couldn't find how to do that.  Took me at least a minute or two to find.  I wonder what other hidden wonders await me.

Adobe Photoshop / Re: Contact Sheets in CS4

Just to clarify you can still do it in Photoshop it is on the install disc.  You just have to install separately from the default install.

General Prepress / Re: Using XPS in prepress
January 08, 2010, 11:26:28 AM
I have fortunately not run across this in the production environment.  However our PC tech guy here at work shows me Windows 7 a few months before release and how they have a new type of file like a pdf.  He starts sending out memos using xps format and of course no one can open them because the rest of the company has either a Mac or is running Windows XP.

Adobe Acrobat / Re: Strange PDF
December 23, 2009, 11:53:50 AM
I usually see that PScript5.dll as Creator when I receive a Publisher file that's been made into a pdf.  I don't have a PC here with Quark so I can't really test this out.  It might be the way a PC handles the conversion?  Of course if you can't reproduce it then maybe not.  Also depending on what version of Distiller they are using it might read it as a different Creator.

Did they try a restart?

Maybe just try exporting out as a an eps file and then distilling?

Quark Xpress / Re: Typed in or corruption?
December 03, 2009, 01:17:16 PM
Old post so sorry but I've seen this happen when a shift-space was typed on a PC then converted to a Mac.  Of course that was from Publisher to InDesign but same idea.  I notice from the screenshot they occur before the capital letters.  So possible the designer was holding shift when making the space.  My 2 cents.

Freelance / Re: Help with font/logo
October 02, 2009, 11:34:15 AM
Sorry I didn't mean for someone to use one of the fonts that cost money.  I thought they may have a free font that I couldn't find similar to the one in the logo.

Freelance / Help with font/logo
October 02, 2009, 11:08:58 AM
Here's the story.  Last year a competing paper sponsored an event at a local mall.  This year we are sponsoring it.  The mall used all the same logos as last year on all of the promotions but used our company name.  Unfortunately what they used is a 72 dpi web graphic.  We need to print a full color insert in our newspaper and need a higher res logo.  I was able to find a font on the web that matched but unfortunately it costs $$$.  The fonts that I think would work are either Casablanca or Carlos Bold.  Maye someone out there has similar free fonts to those and can type "Octoberfest" for me in Illustrator, create outlines and send.  I tried messing with live trace but am no good at it and got pretty poor results.  I have attached a sample.  Thanks for help anyone.

I might be way off base on this but I thought if it was humor or done in jest it was OK.  I know when movie spoofs get made they rip off the real movie but make it funny and then they don't have to pay licensing fees and what not.
