I'm still really annoyed that they orphaned the core 2 duo machines. I'm sitting on a 15" mbp that is basically useless to me, and just last night fired up my sister in law's iMac c2d which also is a dead end. Maybe I'll just install Windows 10 on them. That ought to be fun.

Re-reading your posts, "Master" may only work with the /VT as that's kind of how it works.

"
While PDF/VT-1 always consists of a self-contained file, other variants of the standard support the use of external graphic content (PDF/VT-2) as well as streaming through the use of multi-part MIME packages (PDF/VT-2s). In addition to being a digital master for VDP printing, it can be shared, viewed and interactively navigated by human operators using a normal PDF reader, though completely accurate rendering requires a PDF/X-4 or PDF/VT conforming viewer.

It should not be any cost for the consumer device (output device like RIP) - it's APPE compliant and part of the pdf X standard. As far as the producer, it's an option in my GMC software without it being an additional license, just an option in the PDF engine. If GMC didn't charge extra it's unlikely anyone else does because GMC loves to charge for erryfuckinthing.

You may want to look at PDF/VT for an option. I've used it in certain scenarios to help rip speed for VDP

edit: this was recommended to me by someone at Xeikon, and it really helped on some 100K+ jobs we ran. Worth a read of the wiki in any case.

The Rest... / Re: Apple Numbers

I'm pretty sure the world didn't need another spreadsheet program. Excel, Google Sheets, OpenOffice and Libre Office seem to have all boxes ticked. Excel is used here in some pretty interesting ways, we've got some people that can write nifty VBA.

If Apple wanted to be taken seriously they should have taken a clue from the other Excel clones and just kept the formulas the same so users wouldn't have the learning curve.

This place is pretty awesome. Most shops will not have the problem we are experiencing. There's a lake of beer flooding out of the secret bar they built in here. Apparently a tapper line ruptured or something. The CSR area is partially flooded, and it is leaking out of a wall into the shop area.

most of these guys can be set to print a nozzle check every 12 hours or whatever, iirc.

I miss the simple days of vdp apps that only did simple stuff.

Here's about 30% of the job I'm building:

I'm pretty happy to be out of straight commercial print. Still get to deal with botched files, brain dead csrs, last minute fire drills, etc, but the environment in mailing is another level of "it MUST be correct". Shit gets looked at a whole lot more carefully before leaving the building. God help you if your mistakes get by   though because everything goes in the mail and there are no refunds on postage.

A manager once told me that a smart business knows they'll never hit 100%, and chasing that last 1-2% will ultimately be a net loss. In other words, shit happens.

I just got one yesterday. Seemed to work well with HBO and Netflix, don't really care about streaming local content though, have the htpc for that. For $35 it was worth it to have a decent Netflix interface .

Kodak Preps / Re: Preps 5 to 6 inevitable - tips?

For what little impo I do lately I'm really missing preps 6. New gig uses Metrix. Not bad but not Preps.
It also uses JDF folding patterns though. They took a bit of getting used to in preps but were ultimately awesome. No guessing, pick your fold pattern, plug in your bleeds, hi/lo pickups, and go. It will even automatically calculate creep if you plug in your correct stock.

Really, I was completely shocked and amazed after not shopping there for 15 years. It's very different.
You still bag your own crap. The cashiers don't have any patience for anyone not with their program of speed. You gotta put a quarter in the cart so you bring it back. Poor folks shop there. The food does not suck anymore though!
