Macintosh / iMac Lost Preferences

Hey guys,

I have a strange one, and am wondering if anyone else has run into this. I got into work today and my iMac has forgotten which program opens what. PDFs now open with Preview, had them set to Acrobat DC as well as all of my connections to SMB drives were lost. There were no warning windows or popups from the OS at all. My desktop picture is the same - the blue/green cloud burst thing from Apple.

I'm running Sierra if that helps.

Macintosh / Volumes Eject Randomly?

Hey guys, I'm wondering if anyone has an idea what might cause this? BasicallyI have two shares on one device, a LaCie 5 Big NAS Pro, the Office share and the XMF_Files share. They of course come up as separate volumes in Mac. For some reason, I can't get the Office volume to stay connected. I never lose the XMF_Files volume, but the Office volume drops repeatedly - 4 times in the last 15 minutes.

This is frustrating behavior on the Mac as my computer is the computer that runs Crashplan Pro to backup the Office "drive" and the XMF_Files "drive".

I would think it would be a cable issue or a network switch issue if both were disappearing since they both have the same IP address on the network. But since only one is vanishing, I don't know where to point the blame or start looking for issues/solutions.

Macintosh / iMac Suddenly Super Slow

Hey guys,

Has anyone run into an issue where your iMac is suddenly super slow? I can't figure it out. I have ~97% CPU available, ~8GB of RAM available and no way to tell disk usage in activity monitor. I'm running OS X Sierra 10.12.6.

Its mostly evident with Finder. Renaming things takes minutes. Several of them. I can select an item, rename it, and it won't show the new name for a few minutes. It also takes a while to open a file. Doesn't matter if its InDesign or Acrobat or whatever. I double click, see the icon get large and fade (You know how it looks when you do that right?) And then nothing. Even if the app is already open... the file takes 1 minute or so to actually open.

Its a little faster on the desktop vs a network volume. But still slow.

Any ideas?

Hey guys, is there a way to split up a 10up BC template from Word into separate 3.5x2 business cards? I have a lady that has 630 separate cards, they're inspirational phrases or something, and they're two sided...see the attachment. Is that possible? I don't want to have to place them and manually adjust in indesign for that many cards if I don't have to.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Fujifilm XMF / Font Embedding issues

I can't get a customer's files to load into XMF. I keep getting this error, see screenshot. I've tried everything, and I can't even get it to convert to outlines in pitstop. I'm stumped and this customer has a kajillion maps on order and due on Tuesday.

I have tried Flattening in Acrobat and converting to outlines that way, but no luck, it did goofy things to fonts.

Fujifilm XMF / Proof Form in XMF?

Is there a way to generate a Proof form in XMF? What I mean is something that takes the PDF size, generates extra media/crop box around it and populates an area with the colors used in the file the name of the file and what not? We toured a packaging plant here in town and they have something that does that but they're using Esko Automation Engine.

We had a blunder here where we proof dielines and artwork separate (on two pages of the same PDF). This caused a problem when the art of a job extended into another panel on a folder and us in prepress are trying to find a way to "fix" this and I figured some kind of cool form would be nifty.

Enfocus / "Processed with 'GPC'"? - What is this?

Hey everyone! I don't know what I did, but lately when I open a PDF for the first time, this pops up in my Enfocus Navigator.

Has anyone run into this before? I'm not sure what is causing this to happen.

Macintosh / Automator New Folder and Subfolders?

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knew how to do what I'm trying to do.

Basically, I'm trying to create an action in Automator that would create a folder in the current finder window, name it 0000_Job, then create four subfolders within it with their own names. Is this possible? I'm trying to minimize how frequently I have to move windows to get to the desktop to copy a folder I have on my desktop.

If the automator thing isn't possible, is it possible to have some sort of shortcut to copy this folder from my desktop with a click of an icon in the finder window toolbar?

Hey guys, I'm getting an odd issue. I can't open Color Path Organizer on Safari. I have Silverlight installed and it is in the Internet Plugins folder in the mac's library. It just shows this screen to download Silverlight.

Hey guys,

So in prepress here, we've been using a program called Spark for email because back in El Capitan or Yosemite, Mail stopped working for us. We've been using Exchange here at work for email and prepress only has one address, which both of us use. What was happening with Mail, was that Exchange at one point didn't support different colored Tags/Flags so we started using a different program, which doesn't end up using different tags anyway but eh... Spark has lately been putting emails from our web b2b print portal in spam but not consistently. Having missed a few jobs because of this, I'm tempted to go back to Mail as I don't remember Mail having this problem.

What do you guys do? Do you have multiple people using the same address?

Anyone know if there is a way to get this to permanently stop bothering us besides enabling it? We've been hitting the "Not Now" option every day here in my office for the last few days. In the past this actually stopped it but now...

Adobe Acrobat / Turn Comments to Art?

Hey everyone, I've got a strange one. The customer somehow did most of their text in a PDF for a Remit Envelope as comments. I didn't realize it until they looked at the proof and said, "Hey there is text missing!" Is there a way to turn them into actual artwork or do I have to typeset it?

Have you guys seen this one? the email address looks like an actual adobe address, however the typos/grammatical errors have be concerned. I'm also concerned how they got the names and email addresses of our two accounts.

Hey everyone, I've been trying to figure out our offsite backup solution for a bit now and I've kinda run out of ideas. We were using Crashplan Pro through our external IT Company which seems to have dissolved and it was no longer working so we stopped using it and can no longer sign in. Crashplan wasn't really working to begin with, and wouldn't back things up as it should have. I'm sure the IT guy didn't set it up properly, there are a whole host of questions I have as to why things were set up the way they were, but that's a different topic all together. Anywho, fast forward a few months we try Microsoft One Drive for Business, turns out they don't support cloud backups from the LaCie NAS OS on our two LaCie 5Big NAS boxes so they nicely let us cancel and refunded our money.

I've attached a little infographic I made this morning showing what we currently have setup. Basically, our working files are on the lower NAS box, which every day at 6pm gets mirrored to the NAS box on top. Everything in our shop is connected through the Netgear Network Switch and connects out to the world through our Comcast Business router/modem.

For lasting backups, we burn a whole month's worth of files to BlueRay discs and keep on a shelf here locally, two local external hard drives and once those get filled up, we move them offsite to the owner's house. Our two iMac workstations are backed up via Time Machine to local external hard drives as well incase something goes wrong there.

Now if something catastrophic happened at we lost both NAS drives, we'd be out of all current files so I've been trying to figure out a better solution. From what I gather, crash plan might work if setup to validate the backup on a weekly basis; I believe it was set to validate every day and validating 5TB of files every day prevented the backup from actually happening. Unfortunately crash plan has to run on my iMac which means it has to be on at all times for the backup to function as far as I know.

So my question for you guys is what do you guys use for offsite. I'm trying to keep this super budget friendly, crash plan looks like it will be $10 a computer. For 5TB of data and then some as I'd like to keep everything not just a mirror Amazon S3 looks expensive but it'd be nice to see what everyone is doing.

Adobe InDesign / Separations Preview Bugged?

Hey everyone, so yesterday separations preview in InDesign CC worked just fine. It showed the percentages and everything. Today however, I don't see any percentages. I dragged the panel as wide as it will go and nothing. I deleted the preference .plist file and have restarted my iMac neither fixes the issue. Any ideas what's up?

Hey everyone. So lately I've been getting a ton of jobs in with transparencies, typically black set to overprint or multiply usually and I'm getting darn near 400% ink. I've had some luck dropping large shapes to OP0 from 0P1 and an action to covert images to SRGB then to CMYK to get 300% ink but there are some jobs that either of these just don't fix the problems. I've got Acrobat DC and Pitstop 12.3. I just feel like this is something I should have been trained on years ago, but wasn't. Anywho, I've got 14 24-page magazines I have to manually fix but it get's scary when you're trying to get things to be consistent across multiple pages.

How do you guys handle these issues?

I know this is similar to my last couple forum posts, but I didn't want to pull up old threads.

So... I had been looking into offsite backup solutions for our file server for a while now and decided on Microsoft's OneDrive for Business. We already use them for our email hosting so it was a pretty simple thing to add. I get my 5Big updated (not the primary one but the mirror/local backup one up to date) and try to get the backup to use the one drive. I get an authentication window that points to personal Microsoft accounts, not business accounts. Anyone know how to authenticate for a business account? I've got Microsoft support looking into this for me but they're kinda slow... I'd have Seagate and LaCie looking into it as well but I can't find a contact link for support. It goes cycling between the contact page and the support knowledge base page... not helpful.

Has anyone figured out how to get rid of this notification without clicking details or installing it? Swiping it away doesn't do anything. If you have installed High Sierra, is it compatible with XMF 6.5.2?

Hello everyone. My new iMac arrived last week and I got everything moved over from a time machine backup. Everything seems to be working well enough with the migration, however I have a strange issue with the Pitstop 12 tool icons missing. They look like pink lego pieces. I know I can read the names, but I've had to remove the icons off of my toolbar on the top because I can't easily see which tool I'm grabbing. Any ideas how to fix this? I've attached a screenshot of what they look like.

General Prepress / Lacie NAS 5Big Backup problem

Hey guys,

Does anyone have any experience with the Lacie NAS 5Big? I have two identical 5Bigs one is our working drive setup with the default SimpleRaid with 6TB as working space, and the remaining 4TB as backup drives if one goes bad.

The backup is the same. It is setup as a netshare backup following the directions from the usermanual. The Working 5Big has two jobs to backup it's two shares on the volume to the backup 5Big every night. That sounds good and all. It looks good. The Backup 5Big has the same space used as the working 5Big as I've got it set to only send modified parts. The idea was that this would be a local nightly "oh no I deleted something" sort of solution, or an oh crap our whole thing went down, lets restore yesterday's data. We do have everything backed up (with iterations and deleted files) to CrashPlan, but this was supposed to be a good safety net. Weird thing though is that I went to get a file and I can't view anything on the backup (I am the admin, I should be able to), it says there is no volume - but it is using space and has a volume in the device management screen. I also can't select it from the working 5Big's backup/restore job. I can select it to backup to it, but cannot restore to it. Any ideas?
