Adobe Acrobat / Publisher created PDF
January 11, 2008, 02:01:22 PM
maybe you guys have some ideas on this..

I recieved a 16 page PDF doucment, created from MS Publisher.. Acrobat is taking FOREVER to draw each page, it seems theres a textured background and appears to be drawing it pixel by pixel, its like theres a million vectors there. I cant get my hands on the original Publisher file.

Ive tried reprocessing the pdf, converting it to an image, everything chokes my system. I can print it as single sheets, but i need to impose it for a booklet, and that process crashes my rip. (the original 17 MB file turns into a 1.6GB file on the RIP)

any ideas how i can impose this thing?

I was going to try to place each page in indy, and have it impose it for me, im going to try that after lunch. I work better on a full tummy.

so is there an easy way in illy, or any other app, to convert vector graphics with cmyk/spot values to its greyscale equivalent and keep it vector? it doesnt have to be a perfect conversion. it would be sort of like grabbing a vector object and rasterizing it greyscale, but keeping the vector info. probably a stoopid analogy but the end result is what i need. i have a project where i need to convert a bunch of industrial symbols to a greyscale-only version. so far ive been ungouping them manually and changing the color values to something close in grey.  for a few its not bad but i just learned there are 100's that need to be done.

from what i understand, they are feeding these into some type of cnc machine that can etch 128 levels of grey, but for some reason it cant differentiate the color vectors..

Adobe InDesign / HELP! CREEP is bugging me!
October 25, 2007, 01:40:16 PM
so this is the first time this came up since using CS2..

Im working on an 18-month calendar, saddle stitched (20 spreads, 10 press sheets).  - 100# gloss coated book

How do i figure out the creep adjustment when building the spreads? Im just doing the layout, and we are outsourcing the print job. I shouldnt assume their prepress guy is going to do it for me.

I built it on 8.5x11 facing pages, then im using inbooklet to build the spreads.  Id like to supply the printer with pre-built spreads so there are no surprises.

should i even worry about it on 10 sheets?

Adobe Acrobat / PDF MARKUPS!
October 18, 2007, 05:52:09 PM
Whoa, after 3 years of providing PDF proofs, i finally have a client who actually does their proof corrections/edits INSIDE of Acrobat!  Im just in shock that someone actually took the time to figure it out! I got so excited in a nerdy way it was funny, i just had to share.  Now if i can just get them to stop using Comic Sans....

Adobe Acrobat / creating outlines from Acrobat
October 16, 2007, 11:03:35 AM
So i have a PDF of a map, and i need to take part of the map section and place it in another document.  Normally i would just open the PDF in illustrator (Im running CS2 on XP) and take what i need, however, its not recognizing the embeded font names (which are many) so everything is all whack in illy.

Isnt there a way to re-process a pdf from acrobat so it converts all the text to outlines?

thanks!

The Rest... / TR systems MICROPRESS
October 05, 2007, 05:45:06 PM
does anyone out there have experience on a TR systems Micropress (v5.5)?

our hdd crashed, we had to re-install, and now it hasnt been the same. we used to have service on it, however when EFI bought out TRsys, we got assed out on service.

i need to pick someones brain. everything seems to work, except i cant get it to scan greyscale anymore, it just returns corrupt data. it will do black scans just fine..

its an old system, but it still is the backbone of our repro dept..

thanks!

Tips & Tricks / Firefox passwords...
September 13, 2007, 05:58:26 PM
I had this post in another thread, but figured it was more appropriate here:

speaking of firefox, do you know if you have it remember your passwords, and you dont have a master password set on firefox, ANYONE can view your logins/passes by just opening your browser? my wife showed this to me last week and i almost crapped my pants..

go to tools>options>security and click on  "show passwords" it will list them all.  If you set a master password, then it will make you verify before it shows you, but then anytime you visit a page with a login it will prompt you for your master pass again..  By default, theres no master password set.. Ive been using FF ever since and this was all news to me, and i consider myself "up on things"

CTP - CTF / Mitsubishi RIP's
September 12, 2007, 10:15:53 PM
so does anyone out there have an older mitsubishi rip/platesetter? (ill have to update the model number tomorrow).

we have one thats pretty old, still works, but we cant get support for it anymore.

im about 2 miles away from the one i use - the pressroom is in our municipal center, but my office is in city hall. i send files to the queue that are ready for output, then the pressmen output the plates. the problem is that when files wont process, I cant seem to find an error log or anything on the RIP. i just get a phone call from the press operator saying "it wont process", and thats it.. usually it turns out to be some crappy graphic somewhere, but 99% of the time im guessing because i get no real info from the operator.. its a crappy situation that will take an act of god or higher to change.

the last time this happened, NONE of the files i dropped in the queue would process. after taking a drive over to figure out what was going on, in turns out the hard rive on the RIP was full, and it would just abort when processing new jobs.  turns out the pressmen love to archive old jobs without deleting them, EVER!.. got that fixed, butim just thinking that that thing has to report to an error log somewhere when jobs dont process. i just cant find it. any ideas?
