General Prepress / Re: Goodbye, prepress

Quote from: Joe on January 07, 2014, 05:13:18 PMYa know, I bitch and grumble about prepress as much as anyone but at the end of the day there is nothing else I'd rather be doing job wise. Of course I'd like some of the people to be a little less stupid but it's probably that way in about any job.

If you are really miserable doing it though by all means get out and find something that makes you happier.
Holy Crap!  Joe and I agree on something.

Quote from: rickself on October 13, 2011, 10:44:51 AMI have 25 years in prepress and just began a job with a packaging/carton company in April.Job security at age 55 is nice to have.

Congrats, you are one of the lucky ones. But only so many of us can craft dog food cartons and toothpaste boxes.

See, Joe!  :hello:
I had to bring this one back - I didn't think it would actually happen, but it only took 3 years. I am really starting to long for the days of pagination, printer spreads, anything but packaging!!

Packaging is the way to go.  Publications are dying due to the World Wide Interweb.

Everyone's stuff need to be shipped in SOMETHING.

We use Cyberduck here.

It's free and it works great.

Quote from: Skryber on November 07, 2013, 01:28:38 PMMake a dummy and adjust until it's perfecto.

I tried the "Math Route" on Born's advice...worked like crap.

Then I did the "Dummy" route...worked a lot better.

I built a rectangle, then used Object > Envelope Distort > Arch.  I used 5%.  It worked OK, with some trimming on the top & bottom.  I was monkeying with it all day, and I could see I'd never hit it dead nuts.  So I just made the label larger, allowing for trim.

Thanks for the ideas.

That's ALMOST what I did...

I had the two circumferences measured, but I didn't do the arch...it was a Trapezoid or parallelogram?  (it's been a while since High School Geometry)

I do have the bucket.  Any idea on how to gauge the amount of the arch?  Or just trial & error?

I do cartons all day long, but these round things are a bitch!

Thanks, Born.

General Prepress / 5 Gallon bucket
November 06, 2013, 04:13:59 PM
I have a packaging problem that I'm having trouble with.

I'm working on a project that I need a template for a label that will fit a 5 Gallon bucket.  They want it to wrap around the entire bucket.  I made a straight "Banner", but it didn't lay flat.
I'm guessing I need to do some sort of warp in Illustrator, maybe?  :homer:

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Looking for Work / Re: Looking for advice...

My brother manages an apartment complex.  He makes a few hundred a month selling the old Water heaters, A/C units, etc. for scrap.  He's always looking for motors, wires, etc. on garbage day.

He says if he really focused on it, he could make more.

I'm with Joe... don't get stressed out too much any more.  After being beaten down for over 30 years, it's getting easier to let the crap go that doesn't affect me directly.

Do my job to the best of my ability, and go home.

Quote from: pspdfppdfx on September 11, 2013, 12:40:44 PMAh, that's a nice one looks like.

We bought the "cheapo" software.

Looks OK, would rather have that nice one you use but we only do about 20 barcodes a year if that.

It's well worth it to us... we do over 20 a day.

Quote from: t-pat on September 11, 2013, 08:46:00 AMI've seen it. A company with management committed to the goal, willing to pay for G7 certification, having someone on staff that can maintain this, and willingness to give this person press time and resources.

What he said.

We use Barcode Producer.  Easy to use, does the codes you are looking for.

What Mark said.

We installed two new Heidelberg presses in the past few years, those two using Prepress Interface.

Export a CIP3 from Power Layout and drop it in a Hotfolder.  Easy-Peasy.

Look into a Xyron laminator.  Beats the Hell out of spray glue.

Only downside is ours only handles up to 25" wide stock.  Don't know if they make a larger one.
