Title: EXE files... view on Mac
Post by: frailer on December 17, 2014, 04:03:03 AM

Wanting to view X-Rays of my hand, which I have on disk, (but PC/EXE files), on a Mac. I've downloaded Wine, unPackaged it, but can't see an app that I can drag into Applications.
Most likely a PICNIC problem, but any pointers on this one? Alternatives to Wine?

Not much experience with fruity computers here, but I think you can use Virtualbox to set up a Windows machine inside of OS X. Parallels desktop might be another alternative.

What's wrong with your hand, by the way? Hope it'll get well soon!

Wine is all about containers. Create a new container, call it what you want, and open it. When it's open, you have to install the EXE file within the container. I use it all the time. I usually move the container I named somewhere other than the default place within the Wine folder. That could be your problem.

Or open it on your Windows server at work.

And yeah, inquiring minds want to know the details.

Shall post up when successful. Dislocation 2nd joint, L index finger.   :homer:   On a bicycle ride with 4 others, transiting through back of new industrial estate last saturday. Wasn't 'paying attention', guy in front slowed/swerved for upcoming road chicane. Homer didn't anticipate it.
As I landed in the greenery in the chicane bay, coulda been OK, but finger end-on into concrete edge. I can see it in slow-mo now....

Images to follow, for entertainment.

I've been called special before...but not in a nice way. :rotf:

DCS, here is the wine-10.6.2 folder contents. Missing something? If not, where to from here?

I think that is source code that has to be compiled by you. What I think you need is the binary application.

Well that sucked. The above link is a 500 mb download and then the install fails on both OS X 10.10.1 and OS X 10.6.8.

I revert back to my earlier suggestion. Take it to work and open it on a windows PC there. :D

Well scratch that. After about 5 attempts it installed and created the Wine app in the applications folder. When you run that it will tell you that you have to install X11 for it to work but X11 is no longer included with OS X so you have to install XQuartz.

OK, after getting both of those things installed it works great. With Wine running you can click the Start button and navigate to your Mac desktop and run the .exe from there. You don't have to copy it into the Wine Windows virtual file system.

So, clarifying... I still need to download as per that 1st link (?500MB), or not.
Downloading Quartz. I'll pick up in AM, as leaving now...

Yes you will need both. I had to run the Wine installer about 5 times before it ran without errors. I don't know why I got the errors in the first place and also don't know how it fixed itself. YMMV. :)

Yeah but ideally want it openable on the iMac here. I don't like using our server for tooling with stuff. Just me and comfort levels.
Gates does some laudable stuff these days, no doubt spurred on by Melinda withholding conjugal rights until he coughs up on certain things, but we'll never forgive him for making a big slab of IT world Windows, right? Or am I wrong?

... funny story here, but quite good, really. There's a company over your way does 'The Great Courses'. Really good stuff... maths, physics, history all sorts, but good quality. Gates was on his pedal-machine watching one which gave a big overview of the eons, how they reckon the Earth formed, bigger context, right up to now. It was done by a professor here in Sydney at Macquarie University, (where my son did his degree), and Gates was bowled over.
So this professor gets a call one day soon after that; caller has a funny/high/squeaky voice.. "Hi, it's Bill Gates here..."  :rotf:

He ends up flying the guy over, they go out for a meal.... Gates buys a licence to put it throughout US schools. Nice story.

Should work fine if you can get the above software to install. If it fails at first keep trying.

My only problem was the install failed with a script error the first 4 times I tried it. But persistence pays off. Number 5 installed just fine.

I've never had that happen. I've installed it several times. I just did it at home as a matter of fact about 2 weeks ago and no problemo. Kids wanted Five Nights at Freddies 1 and 2... who am I to deny them.

The mask probably scared it into working right the first time for you.

Could also be because I was trying to install into Yosemite. Although I did try it on OS X 10.6.8 when it failed on Yosemite and I got the same script failure there. I didn't try again on the OS X 10.6.8 Mac after that one attempt.

Getting crashes on Wine opening of file.

... she be a big 'un, that Wine.

Have supposedly installed XQuartz, but no see in apps folder. ... OK, it skips 'Destination' on instal steps; not a normal app, right?

I see you are running OS X 10.6.8. Make sure your version of Java is completely updated as far as it can go through Apple Software update. The error you are seeing is related to Java.

I am getting the same error on 10.6.8 and I know my version of Java is as far as it can go which means it is the latest version of Java 6. My Yosemite iMac is running version 8 of Java and Wine runs OK on it. I can only conclude that wine might not work in OS X 10.6.8 because you can't upgrade Java past version 6 on it.

I've tried everything I can on OS X 10.6.8 and I can't make it work. This version of Wine is 1.7. It might be possible that an older version of Wine might work on it if you can find one.

Yeah, I think this setup's too old, (like me). Situations to be faced in 2015. Fujifilm won't be updating the current XMF. Major move to 64 bit, so new box required in next few months, I think.
Meanwhile, Archiving XMF Jobs and closing down for 2 weeks.   :hello:  Oh, I'll still be around, from home a bit...

Yeah there have been four full version releases since OS X 10.6.x. Almost anything recently released requires 10.7.x and even it and 10.8.x are getting a little rusty.

I still envy your 2 week shutdown every year.

I wouldn't mind so much but I know I will have no work to do, just the press. Since any holiday really doesn't matter to the boss it's just another day for him. It doesn't matter that others here have family in from out of town or anything. No holiday party for us that I know of either.

My company had 2 parties, actually - one was for the marketing company that owns us, and one was just for the print shop. We actually have a full private bar next door at corporate HQ, and the whole thing was held there and catered by our in-house deli (the food was awesome - crab balls, shrimp, raw oysters, beef tenderloin, stuffed mushroom caps, sushi, etc.) The smaller one for ourselves was a week later and was a lot more casual (ziti, wings, cold cuts), but the boss invited everyone to a local pub with open bar and appetizers for a couple hours.

Can't really complain about that - it was great!

The ink company is bringing by sammiches.

That seems to be the limit of our holiday parties. Nothing from the owner at all.

I think I've bought lunch for the shop more often than he has. Funny, back in the day when he was just sales at another shop he forced the sales team to buy pizza for the shop for xmas during the lean times. He said it's those guys that get our jobs out, without them we have nothing to sell.

Guess things change when you become the boss.
