8.4 and making internal CT'S

What the hell I have it set on import to not make internal ct but I keep getting one, in this case it's an opacity mask. Didn't do this in 8.1.

For reasons specific to our shop we NEVER want internal cts, is there a way to get rid of them? I'm monkeying around trying to figure it out but if someone knows why I'd be grateful to know.

Ok I have it narrowed down to a transparency issue turns out it is the opacity mask, checked pictures used replaced the internal ct with the corresponding tiff and it works fine. Still don't know why it's going to the internal CT and not a tiff.
