Quote from: Earendil on October 20, 2009, 11:18:11 AMJust saw this thread. We have had the same problem Joe. Large Perfect bound book, Cover printed sheetfed, newsprint off the Merc and a glossy ad section off the heatset. Bound, cut and the heatset glossies grew by 1/16 of an inch after the finished cut.

So just the glossy section grew? We're having it happen to both the glossy (except sheetfed cover which is on heavier stock) and newsprint and they all grow different amounts. Makes the trim look like crap after it sits for awhile. Like it was cut with a handsaw.

Edit: The Merc is coldset?

I think they would need to make wet farts and that is just gross.

Well, our Newspaper line (Merc) has an oven but we only run it on gloss runs, like gloss wraps on nice tabloids. On the regular news or rebright, we don't fire it up and those sections didn't grow. Only the sections that came through the oven. Same theory as discussed earlier in the thread; we're thinking the oven caked the gloss and trapped moisture that was released after the face trim. It seems to be only growing in the direction of the face trim, must have to do with grain direction too.

Same here. Have you found anything to fix the problem or lessen it?

Ran the gloss section on the sheetfed the next time, no heat.

I think my bosses might balk at trying to run a thousand page phone book on the sheetfed.

Ya, true. In my case, 800 pages were news, again, no heat and there was only a 16 pg gloss section. Two sheetfed runs instead of one heatset but the quantity wasn't huge so a little off-line folding and we didn't have to worry about the stretching issue. Less spoils off the sheetfed.
